Mischievious smile. Gentle eyes. Suit and tie.
You hugged me like it was nothing,
And I was pleasantly surprised.
You were snatching cookies in my dreams last night
Like a little boy with a secret.
You tucked them away and winked at me,
Hoping I'd let you keep it.
You were selling houses in my dreams last night
Lots of phone calls, fancy cars, and meetings to go to.
You waved good-bye, I'll see you later,
I heard your keys jangling and I missed you.
You were hunting for elk in my dreams last night
Orange suspenders, flannel shirts, you could smell the season.
When you returned you were never alone,
You brought puppies and dead mice with your venison.
You were teaching me lessons in my dreams last night
Oil changes, driving cars, the importance of working hard.
You taught me to enjoy the simplest of things.
Campfire beneath the stars.
You were doting over Mom in my dreams last night
Dinner out, movies in, the love of your life.
You asked me to help take care of her,
To assure you she'd be alright.
I'll only see you in my dreams tonight
Grasping at memories slipping.
Mischevious smile. Gentle eyes. Suit and tie.
I hear your keys jangling and I miss you.

This has just totally blown me away. You've perfectly captured the way I feel about my mother. You are a genius.

I've read this poem and several of your posts about your father. I wish I could bring him back for you. I wish I could help answer your childhood questions. I wish I could make your father a Saint as I know he deserves to be. All I can say is, I know the reunion you will have someday in Heaven will be a joyous occasion like no other.
This is wonderful, Kat. <3
