My Mama

Pregnant six times, 1674 days.
She sculpted our minds and sang our praise.

Lost her first true love at such a young age
But refused to be broken by the war that was waged.

With 12 young eyes on her for direction
She grieved her loss but shifted her attention.

She went back to work to put bread on the table.
She was pulled many ways and did what she was able.

She taught us to clean and be self sufficient.
We sometimes would cook, though not proficient.

She learned to be husband AND wife, queen of multi-tasking.
Forty plus hours at work came home to kid question asking.

Help me with my homework? Where are my shoes?
Will you give me a ride to the movies at two?

Am I still grounded? Can I watch TV?
Will you get my doll from Baby, she took it from me!

Take me to the mall? Can I have money and clothes?
Can my friend sleep over? Do I have a big nose?

Will you mend my pants? Can you reach that for me?
Did you take those books back to the library?

Where’s the remote and who’s on the phone?
Buddy’s off his chain and he’s not home.

Remember practice at four! Is it your turn to drive?
And don’t miss my game tomorrow at five!

Did my teacher call you? I didn’t cuss!
Can we have our allowance? ARE YOU LISTENING TO US!?!

I missed church on Sunday, am I sinner?
I’m hungry! I’m starving! WHAT’S FOR DINNER!?!

Business calls, PTA, pet care, yard work and faxing,
Laundry, groceries, mopping and waxing.
With so much to do we rarely saw her relaxing!!

But her hard work paid off, she’s found love twice over.
Her six kids, best friends, have all grown older.

Each child successful, solid, and strong.
They go to her first when something is wrong.

Their devotion to her runs deep and true.
They apologize for what they put her through.

She’s wise beyond years, intelligent, and funny.
Nurturing, logical, creative, and cunning.

She’s a shining example of courage and grace.
If I grow to be half the woman she is, I’ll be in a good place.
