The correct answer to this horribly complicated riddle, is that Pat was sleeping on the couch because we were waiting to get our carpets cleaned. I had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. Usually when we have our carpets cleaned we do downstairs only, but after having that dog in the house…and a couple other spills I thought it was a good idea to get the upstairs done too.
And it was. The carpet looks great, but I wasn’t prepared to completely clean out all of the rooms. It was a much bigger job then I was thinking. Luckily I won some box tickets to a baseball game to use on Sunday awhile back and I had secretly arranged to spend a night in a hotel near the field…do you all know where I live or do I need to keep being anonymous about it??
Anyways, all Pat knew was that my Mom was lined up to watch the kids so that we could go to dinner Saturday night. I can’t keep a secret to save my life and I tell Pat everything so I was quite pleased to see myself follow through with the plans.
The carpet guy was at our house from 3pm til 7!! The kids bedtime here is normally 8 and Pat looked disappointed every time I mentioned that maybe we should just order take out and then get the kids from my Moms since it was getting so late.
On the way downtown we passed the exits we would normally take to go get food when Pat finally spoke up. “Ummmmm….Kat?? Where are we going??”
I just smiled and tried to look like I knew exactly where we were headed. I HATE driving downtown. So many people in one place makes me nervous, I have a horrible sense of direction, and I don’t know what streets I can go down and which are one way only. The thought of going somewhere like New York terrifies me.
The directions, thankfully, were pretty straight forward and I think I succeeded at appearing calm, cool, and collected. As I pulled into the hotel parking garage Pat said, “Aaannnd, will you be a guest here??”
It was super fun! No kids, lots of sushi and sake and a successfully pulled off surprise.
Sunday morning I couldn’t help but notice all the shopping out there that was screaming to be done and as I hopped from one favorite place to another I started to wonder why I don’t do that more often…why?? I know not. I must overcome my fear of the city. My wardrobe demands it.
We spent an hour at the Pier, picked up some goodies for the kids and then watched as our favorite team (I could careless really) lost a game of baseball.
The nice thing about this perfectly planned trip was that it meant our carpets could dry for the night instead of moving the furniture back and having the kids trample all over them while they were still wet.
An added bonus.
So THAT, my friends, is why Pat was on the couch. And we both agree that next time we should be gone two nights instead of one. I’m sure Pat could go much longer, but I get homesick for the babies…yes…the same babies you have listened to me b*tch about for the past two days. :) It’s a disgusting cycle…isn’t it!?!
