Advertising. An Amatueurs Breakdown: AdSense

I’ve had AdSense on my blog for a week now and here are some things I’ve learned:

-If you create an account and you’re blog is with Blogger, than you can put advertisements on your blog without going through the hassle of getting the code at AdSense.com. Blogger has the option of using AdSense from your layout page. You can configure it and put it anywhere you want.

-If you want your ads to appear between posts by going to your layout page and clicking on the “edit blogposts” button. A “configure blog posts” box will open up. You need to check the bottom box that says “show ads between posts”. When you click that, a box that says “configure Inline ads” will open up and you can create your ads right there. You don’t even need a code. It’s very easy.
-You accrue money when readers click on your ads. If the only people visiting your blog are your grandparents than I can see why it might be pointless to put ads on your blog. Don’t bother. Have Grandma send you an appreciation check every month…or a mint or something.

-Each time a person clicks on an ad you receive money. Each ad brings in a different amount of money. I guess it depends on the ad. Some are worth more than others. I’ve received as much as a dollar for a click and as a little as twenty cents. There is no set amount and I have no clue which ones are worth money.

-You can not click on your own ads and if the same IP addresses click on your ads everyday, multiple times a day, the AdSense gods will find out and you will stop receiving money for those clicks. You will also be sent to jail for thirty some odd years.

-You can not encourage your readers in any way, shape or form to click on your ads. That’s cheating and the AdSense gods will send you to the naughty chair for cheating and possibly suspend your account. Asking people to click on my ads is absolutely something I will never do.

-Telling your readers that you will donate a certain amount of your earnings back to your blog, for….say…a give away of some sort, is also not allowed. It’s manipulative and sneaky and AdSense has a special island for people like that.

-If you have more than one blog and/or a feed, you can put AdSense ads in each of those places and increase your chances of making some money.

-The ads are not always useless. I click on them at other blogs and sometimes find some interesting content. AdSense magically matches the ads to your content in an attempt to entice readers to click over…sometimes the match isn’t exactly on par, but at the least it’s entertaining. We talked about that already…other times it’s completely useless, like the three days in a row where Progressive insurance had a banner at the bottom of every post. That was annoying. Or the time I was informed that my ads were taking people to naked boobies. Not cool. I’m pretty risque, but I like everybody to stay clothed up in here. I think there is an option for family friendly ads, but I haven’t gotten around to figuring out how to do that yet. Most of them I don’t mind having.

So far, with AdSense on my page I would say I average between one and three dollars a day…with the exception of the weekends which brought me 25 cents total.

Even if you can get fifty cents a day…that’s still 15 bucks at the end of the month that you wouldn’t otherwise have. I guess whether or not it’s worth cluttering up your page a bit for fifteen bucks (maybe less) is an individual decision.

At this point, I’m a big fan…if AdSense were here I’d give it a high five. Although, I should check the “terms of agreement” form I “signed” and see if it’s ok that I provided this little breakdown. I don’t want to end up on that island….

Updated to Add: Adsense kicked me out. They said there was suspicious clicking going on. There is no one to contact regarding my account and the almost one hundred dollars they were supposed to pay me. I know longer want to high five Adsense.
