Attention Facebook Losers...I Mean Users

I discovered a neat trick on Facebook. If you're really smart, and three of you are, then you already know this trick and have my permission to move on to the next blog on your list. If you're computer illiterate AND you have a blog AND you have a Facebook account, then boy do I have a gift for you.

You can connect your blog to your Facebook and make it so that every time you post something to your blog, it updates your status, like this:

OR you can make it so that every time you update your post you can SELECT whether or not you want it displayed on you Facebook page. I like that option because I don't want to overwhelm my Facebook friends with every. single. blog post, so I only select the posts I think they'll like.

I'll tell you why this is a fun idea....because it peaks interest in your blog from people who may be friends on Facebook, but are not currently readers. All they have to do is click on your update, that comes complete with a thumbnail photo of your post, and they can read what you have to say right there in Facebook.

SO! Please Mama Kat, How do you do it!?!

Well I'm so glad you asked.

Step 1.

You want to make sure you are a member of Facebooks "networked blogs". (If you've already become affiliated with networked blogs then skip to step 2.)

It's easy. First you need to go to www.networkedblogs.com.

Scroll down and click on the giant button that says "Add Your Blog." It will take you to Facebook and you will need to log in.

You will be flooded with all kinds of information and options and I'm pretty sure you'll need to enter your blog info as well. You can select your favorite blogs or just scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Next".

Then you will have the option of locating friends' blogs and following them...or just scroll to the bottom and click "Go To The NetworkedBlogs Home Page".

Somewhere in there I think you're going to be asked for your blog URL and you might be asked to put the NetworkedBlogs button on your actual blog so that they can verify ownership. I did all that stuff awhile ago, so when I click "Go To TheNetworkedBlogs Home Page" it takes me directly to the account I already set up on a page that looks like this:

There are a lot of buttons and distracting, yet fun stuff to fool around with. That's fine, get to know the website...and when you're ready, refocus on the task at hand.

Step 2.

Once your blog is all set on NetworkedBlogs, click on "Profile" in the upper lefthand corner underneath the NetworkedBlogs logo. Scroll down until you see the thumbnail of your blog and then click on the title of your blog.

Step 3.

Now find where it say "feed setting" in the right hand column of the page. Click on that.

Step 4.

This is where you choose how you want your Facebook updates to be...updated. Do you want your Facebook page to updated EVERY time you publish a post? Then click the first option.

Do you want to choose which posts show up on Facebook?? Then click the second option.

I think I ignored the last two...or maybe I also clicked on "don't publish all posts"...I can't remember.

Step 5.

Ok now click save.

That's it. Your blog posts will now appear on Facebook. If you clicked the option to choose which posts you want on your Facebook, just go to your Facebook profile and click on the little yellow and blue NetworkedBlogs target. A list of your most recent posts will pop up and you can choose which of them you'd like to display.

Not too bad right!?! A little complicated and a few steps...but all in all not too bad.

If you want to really be best friends then type in Mama's Losin It in the search engine of the page you were just on and follow me and give me gold stars.

Well, I am one of those 3 smart FB losers, and that WAS complicated!! Hence the reason that I couldn't explain it to you. Bless you for taking the time to spell it all out for people. I may direct all the people that ask me over here for you tutorial. I'm just too dang lazy for all of that mess.

Melissa@ The Best Nest said...

Nice work Sherlock. I was using the RSS app for a while but it didn't broadcast so I gave up. 5 gold stars are def in order for that mighty screenshot effort!

Yaya said...

Yeah....it's a good concept. But I don't want some of my facebook "friends" reading my blog. Take for example: I am "friends" with the ppl in our adoption class but on my blog I continually wrote about how they drove me nuts.

Jenn said...

That is awesome! Thanks, I figured it out. I'm following you now and I gave you lots of gold stars! Thanks for sharing!

i found this sometime ago my 15 year old daughter showed me so i dont fall into the smat one either how do i find you on face book i woul love to be your friend

Here's another tip I learned that I feel is the most awesomest feature FB has to offer...you can HIDE people. Then you don't have to read their mundane updates, and they will never be the wiser. So. Lovely. So, I'm off to find you on FB and friend you and give you gold stars, and I won't even hide your updates, and even if I do, you'll never know! Mwahahah!

Beth said...

I am with parentingBYdummies. I love hiding the stupid updates. There are some people on my facebook account who announce when they are going home. We care! On a different note, there isn't a soul on facebook that I want to know about my blog. Facebook, for me, has just been a continuation of high school. And like high school, I lurk on the sidelines.

Nicole said...

Yaya, I can see your delima. That wouldn't be good! :)

Momma@Live. Laugh. Pull your hair out said...

I did it! And am following you. Feel free to follow me...hint hint.

I've had mine working on Facebook ... that usually doesn't happen ... not always the most tech savvy.

Marketing Mama said...

Great instructions - I figured this out awhile ago and really like it. Two problems though - One is that sometimes people comment on FACEBOOK and not on my blog, which is a bit fragmented and annoying...

Second, I'm totally out to all my facebook friends now - including coworkers and family I might have otherwise kept my blog a secret from. The privacy filters don't apply for this tool - so once you hit 'publish' - it sends an update to ALL your friends.l

I followed you on facebook - I'm there too if you'd like to find me. :)

Jenni Jiggety said...

It was a great idea...until my DAD joined Facebook. Bah.

Gina said...

Hey! I can see your blog again! :) A couple of my facebook friends have done this, but considering there are people on my FB friends list who I would prefer NOT see my blog (like my mom), I can't use your trick. Good directions though!

S Club Mama said...

I'm not even sure I'm smart enough to put up the pictures from Facebook like that.

suburbanmom said...

I'M not smart enough, but my hubby IS! ;) He did it for me. How I love my own personal tech support!

You are such a genius. And a wealth of information.

I published today's post on my FB account. If the crazies from high school start piling out of the woodwork, I'm gonna kill you.

After I make out with you, that is.

Thanks so much! It took me awhile, but I think I got it uploaded and ready to go!

i had a comment lol but now i totally forgot it ... got distracted trying to figure out how to HIDE stupid updates;)

Awesome post! I've just started navigating the whole Facebook/Blog intersection and this is very helpful.

BTW, you're on my list to receive the Honest Scrap blog award :) You can pick it up at my blog:

-->Great tip and thanks for sharing.
I'm slowing post more tech tips on my blog as I see people need help with their blogs.
In the meantime, I just keep posting pictures of my family.

Thanks, I'll totally be thinking about that when I have more than a spare ten minutes at a time. I could use more readers... and commenters, not to mention ad clickers!

Jenn said...

I knew you could do this, but I wasn't sure I wanted to learn how. Not sure how many people on FB I want to read my blog. Maybe that's why I have only 13 readers! Ha!

Via said...

Hmm, nice! I'm not sure how I feel about linking mine, though! But, I will say that my facebook page is very very insistent that you and I become friends. (Nice name change, by the way!)

Heather said...

I'm glad I'm one of the smart 3, because all of your instructions and illustrations just confused the h3ll out of me. :) I will admit that I did not know you could select which blog posts make it to facebook. I'll have to go check that out.

Ali said...

Thanks Mama! Great idea.

Jen said...

I liked this, thanks. Does it take time to upload all the post and stuff? 'cause mine is blank. Maybe I don't have enough followers yet?

Thanks, from one facebook loser to another.

Holy cow, Mamakat! How did you know I was looking for some information on this topic? Thanks for the heads up!

if I could figure out a way to navigate through the instructions ..i'd do this too!!

LOL!!

copy/paste/copy/pasting

June Freaking Cleaver said...

Thanks for the instructions. Once I get over my feelings of being thought a loser, I might just set this stuff up.

Carrie said...

Thanks for the tip! I guess I have to be sure to give my facebook friends fake names if I want to talk about them

Casey's trio said...

Thanks for the FB loser lesson...I like how you can choose whuch posts to link on the FB page!

Swirl Girl said...

okay - so I gave this a try.
Apparantly, I am already following myself on NetworkedBlogs on Facebook. So I go through all the steps carefully avoiding the distracting buttons and 'things' you warned us about. I got stopped at step #4 since they only do this for blogs that have 4 or more followers. Crushing blow to the ego.

Jenners said...

I did set this up but then I think you have to have at least 4 Facebook people following your blog to get your posts to publish ... and I'm not sure I'm there yet...

hautepocket said...

I had been doing this until my entire office joined FB and suddenly started friending me from left and right. Work ruins everything.

angie said...

Facebook loser here who had NO idea.

ceecee said...

LOL! I'm glad you were able to find that neat trick ;-D Thanks for the step by step instructions.

Texan Mama @ Who Put Me In Charge said...

This is excellent advice. However My Texan Mama persona is my alter ego and so therefore I dont' have it linked in with my snowy-white innocent "real" persona that is my facebook page. I think all my relatives and Catholic School friends would poop themselves if they read my blog. Either that or yawn.

Evansmom said...

Great directions. Now I just have to decide if I want to share this part of me with the rest of my world.... hmmmm.

Thanks for taking the time to do this.

Can I just say that I am totally addicted to the games? I am sending all 113 of my friends to join my mafia!!! LOL ;)

I do this! I do this! I have loved gaining a few new Facebook friend readers this way.

Hey...how come you're not my FB friend? oh yeah...that would be because I have no idea what your name outside of Kathy and Mama is.... :)

Soxy Deb said...

Thank heavens I'm one of the 3 because that's just too much work to do.

Dianna@KennedyAdventures said...

oooh, thanks. I think I need more followers on my blog, on facebook, though, for this to work.

April said...

Thank you! This is so cool. I turned one of my blogs private and started a public blog but didn't quite know how to let everyone know. Thanks!

I may have to try this out sometime this week...that means I need to get back in the business of blogging more!!

Thanks :)

I love that app on FB! Yes, I am a facebook looser! It has gotten me quite a few people reading (and even got two started blogging!) by having it show up in my feed.

I don't keep my blog a secret, but I don't advertise it on Facebook to my family either. Oh noes!

thanks heaps for this tip - I was using another app but it posts everything to facebook which I'd rather it didn't so this will be perfect! New visitor to your blog - really enjoying it - have added you to my reader!

Bethany said...

I actually *did* know how to do that! However, I'm with Yaya in that I don't want everyone on my Facebook to read my blog. It's been bad enough since my mom discovered it. Snort. ;)

Elftea said...

I knew about that, but I too do not want my FB freinds in on my blog life. I my family and most freinds have no idea about my blogs.

Carrie H. said...

I figure If I write it, anyone can find it. It's the internet after all.
I really like the networked blog feature. I don't publish every single post, it has a feature you can control what goes immediately on your Face Book profile;but even the unpublished can be read eventually by anyone. .

TLCSilverJewelry said...

Following you on NB now. If you have a FB biz page you can also have your blog posts show on your FB biz page thru Networked Blogs.

I've never posted a thing on my blog or FB page that I don't want just anyone to see. That kind of stuff stays in emails.

Christian said...

Pretty cool hook up. Could have done with out the name calling however.

Monica said...

QUESTION--Does it have to be RRS feed to work? I have a squarespace template site, where I blog. I'm able to share the blogs with my facebook profile but wonder how (and if) I can get them on my networked blog or group page. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thanks!

Texas Lutherans said...

Wow, that was good for me. I need a cigarette now.

Lots of hoop-jumping but I think I figured it out.

But don't go looking for me on FB because I post my family blog on there with my real name. No way in HELL I'm going to let my mother in law read all the shit I write on my Texan Mama blog. She thinks her son farts rainbows, how can I break it to her that sometimes he just plain farts?

Thanks for the tips!

Take a look at WordBook. One of its nice features is that comments flow back from Facebook to your Wordpress blog. It also posts directly to Facebook as if you had updated your profile.

Thankyou for posting this useful information as honestly it is not that easy to find your way around when you are new to networked blogs.
