It Was A Good Life

Boo to Mister Linky...malfunctioning today...post your link in the comments if it's not working for you. :( Sorry.

3.) Tell us about Grandpa.

My Grandpa.

Grandpa.

Memories.

I'm squeezed onto the couch next to Grandpa. He brought a salmon over for the party goers. I feed it to my cat. I'm too shy to talk to Grandpa and when I'm not looking he gives a pinch to my side while making a weird ducky noise. I don't know how he makes that noise, but it puts a smile on this shy girl's face. every. time.

Be patient. Sometimes you have to sit all day for a bite. I did what I was told. Got comfortable. I wasn't expecting so much excitement when I felt the little tug on my rod. Grandpa look!!! He helped me reel it in and bragged about what a great fisherman I was.

Such A Catch

I'm in high school. Still missing my Dad. Still too shy to hug Grandpa and tell him I love him and thank him for being so wonderful. So I don't. I buy him a card and I write it down. Typical. Didn't want to see him read it in front of me so I waited until he was leaving our house before running it out to him. I wanted him to know. He took the card and smiled. He already knew.

I'm in love. I'm going to get married. I visit Grandpa and it's his anniversary. Every year he sings Grandma the same special song he made up, "50 yeaaaars married tothewronnnng womannnn....". And every year she smiles at him and then hits him over the head for that song.

I had a baby! A new life. My first. We did everything we could to get out of the hospital before the 24 hours standard stay. We went home. Left her in her carseat. Showered quickly and were off again. Met the family at the cemetary. Cradling a breath of new life while mourning one lost. A reunion unmatched in heaven that day. Father and son together at last.

Grandpa.

For inspiration I called Grandma today and asked her this question...If you had to describe Grandpa in a word...what word would you use?

Without pause she said simply, "a friend. He was a good friend."

Grandma and Grandpa.

I asked her if she ever questioned her choice to marry Grandpa considering the short time they dated.

"Oh NO!!! It was a good life."

How sweet, I thought. She sure loved that man. And then she followed it up by saying,

"I thought about murder a couple times, but...." We both had a good laugh and I breathed a sigh of relief. She makes me feel so normal.

Now it's your turn!

Choose a prompt, post it on your blog, and come back and sign Mr. Linky. For good comment karma try to comment on the three blogs above your name!!

The Prompts:

1.) Ask A Dad! Write a letter asking your husband for advice regarding any issue you might have and record his answer.

2.) Describe a situation that forced you to confront a neighbor.

3.)Tell us about Grandpa.

4.) Which appliance in your home would you most miss living without if you had to live without.

5.) What are three things we would love to know about you!

No sign of the late Mr. Linky. Being the oldest grandkid on both sides, I was fortunate to know both my grandfathers and my great-grandfathers (and mothers). Grandparents and great grandparents are so much fun to talk to.

I miss my grandpa very much. Even though he was my dads father, after my mom died he made sure me and my brother were ok and always taken care of. And he went to the cemetary twice a week to take care of the spot where she was buried making sure it was cared for and maintained. He was a remarkable man.

This was so lovely ... and I can't believe you had your first baby and buried your grandfather at the same time. This was so so sweet.

I picked the same prompt but wrote about my dad and told my son about his grandpa. Here is my link:

And re: Mr. Linky: Have you been moved to the new server yet? I use Mr. Linky on my book blog for a reading challenge I'm hosting and all my Mr. Linkys disappeared and it turns out you have to be moved to the new server and then change the links you had. You can submit a help desk ticket and they'll probably be able to take care of it really quickly -- like in a few hours. You might want to look into that if you haven't done it already.

Jenners said...

Wait a minute ... in my previous comment (which I just reread to see if the link was working)...I seem to imply that it was sweet that you had your first child and lost your grandpa in the same week. That is not sweet -- that is bittersweet. I meant that the whole post was a sweet tribute to your grandpa. Didn't want to give you the wrong impression.

So poignant as always, Kathy.

My grandparents lived in foreign countries (my parents are immigrants) so I never really got to know them. I have always powerfully envied people who've had prolonged contact with their grandparents, always felt wistful when I saw the elderly wearing "Best Grandpa" or "My Grandson Loves Me" shirts. I met my maternal grandparents a handful of times and got to see my grandmother a couple of years before she died. I was an adult by then and able to see the ways that we were alike. It was surprisingly emotional for me - I'd never known this woman across the Atlantic Ocean had so many things in common with me. I'm glad I got that last chance to see it.

Jenny said...
