Kainoa got sick two days ago and I thought our Christmas plans would be altered for sure. We open presents in the morning as a family and then head to my Mom’s house for the real party. And by “real party” I mean the party where Mama gets to drink wine and eat cookies and laugh at my siblings while children run screaming up and down the stairs with noisy toys.
I knew though, that I could get away with leaving Kainoa home with Pat and that the girls would still have a very merry Christmas. He’s just too young to “get” that his Mom and sisters are off doing something fun. Luckily he woke up this morning with a bounce in his step. All that sleep he got yesterday did him good because he’s 100% back to normal. Christmas is back on.
Every Christmas Eve I allow the girls to choose one present under the Christmas tree to open. I like doing this because it tames their excitement a bit and it gives them something to spend the day playing with while I drink wine and eat cookies.
Something was wrong this morning when I saw Maile’s opened gift laying on the floor un-played with. She sat quietly on the couch looking like she wanted to cry and I knew.
“What’s wrong Maile? Are you sad? Are you bummed out about something? Do you not like your gift? Are you wishing you had opened something else? Should I call Santa and tell him to hurry up? Watch me make these funny faces!!! Aren’t I hysterical?? Why aren’t you laughing??”
All of my questions were met with small shakes of her head. She didn’t want to talk about it and no, she didn’t think I was very funny. I let her be for awhile before finally asking,
“Maile? Are you sick?”
Her little lips quivered. She doesn’t want to be sick on Christmas, but she nodded her head yes.

And I’m SO bummed for her!! She’s been counting down the days for a month now. She’s old enough to get it. She knows there will be a gathering at Grandma’s we will be missing. She knows there will be presents she won’t be able to muster excitement for.
I wonder why someone ALWAYS gets sick in this house when a holiday or vacation time is near.
I wonder if excitement can actually cause sickness.
I wonder if I can get away with postponing the gift opening until Maile’s feeling better.
I wonder if I force Maile to sleep allllll day like Kainoa did, if she’ll be feeling 100% tomorrow morning.
I wonder if I can still sneak to my Mom’s house for wine and cookies while the kids nap tomorrow or if I should just continue to eat wine and cookies by myself.
Anyone care to join me?

I say still enjoy your wine and cookies…even if you’re nursing your sick kids…you’ll probably need it! After the first glass, you won’t care that you’re alone. ;) Merry Christmas?

I think I’m gonna need to stock up…

Since Logan has been born, he has not had a Christmas when he has been well. Specifically, he’s had the stomach flu both years. This year, we are struggling with his asthma, but I can deal with that. I also am sure I have a sinus infection at the very least, but I plan to self-medicate with the wine I picked up at the grocery store and continue on in denial. Sending healthy vibes your way.

Awww, I hope she feels better in the morning and that you all have a wonderful Christmas tomorrow…

I think sleep would be the best for her and hopefully she will be okay by morning! So sad she’s not feeling well. Being sick on a holiday is the worst! Hope you will still be able to go ahead with your plans. Merry Christmas!

Aww- poor baby! Maybe hers will be of the 24 hour variety like her brother’s.
We can share virtual wine and cookies if you’d like.

poor baby! I’ll be praying for a quick recovery. Tristan’s sickness was like Kainoa’s. Slept all day & was fine by the next evening.
When did I become my Mom says
Aww sweetie. (your blog was still up when I came to the computer to get a cookie recipe to print and make while I drink my wine, and I couldn’t help refreshing…) Kiss that baba and by all means let her sleep sleep sleep! I’m sure Pat will take good care of her, even if she doesn’t recover in time. :-(

I’m mixing cold meds with my Merlot this evening. I’m staying out of the cookies though … don’t want to mix sugar with the OTC meds which are bound to keep me up.
Merry Christmas!

It never fails, does it? Didn’t this happen with your vacation, too? I feel sorry for you both. It won’t be the same staying home. I hope there is a Christmas miracle and she’s 100% tomorrow!
Mama Kat says
Totally happened on vacation too…and 4th of July…and Thanksgiving last year…I’m still holding out though. She’s not as sick as I’ve seen her before, still a 101 temp, but she MIGHT pull through!
3 Men & a Lady says
So what happened?? Was there a Christmas miracle? I hope :-)

I’d start with the wine and cookies tonight. And if she gets better by tomorrow, you’ll have scored a twofer! If not, you’ll still have the memory of the full tummy and the buzz to see you through the day.

Oh, poor Maile! Hope she recovered in time! Maybe she should have a nip of the wine. I hope you have a wonderful day!

So sorry! I hope she got better. That is just the worst.

Aww, what a bummer! Hope she’s better now. My family and I often fly for the holidays, and you know how there are tons of germs on planes? So yeah – my younger kid often gets some sort of cold or something over Christmas too. Loading her up on the zinc and vitamin C this year seemed to do the trick though. Merry Christmas!
Michelle says
Ohhhh, poor Maile! I hope she did feel 100% better today (and that Laina doesn’t get sick until tomorrow). Fingers crossed for both of you!
And now I think I need to go get myself a cookie. Dagnabit.

Well for the number of times it has happened to us, yes, I could believe excited anticipation can make you sick. Poor Maile. You are a great mom. I know you found a way to help make it all better. Sorry you had to miss the fun. But hey, there is another birthday to be celebrated soon, right? I’m sure THAT will be fun! :-) Blessings to all of you!
Farmers Wife says
Done the wine, now give me the cookies. Hope your little one is on the mend…
Merrie says
Aww, poor Maile!! I hope she’s feeling better and enjoyed Christmas. It’s funny you wonder why someone gets sick at a holiday — that was me all through high school! It never failed — I would always end up sick as a dog over Christmas break, right after finals. I really think it had to do with letting your guard down so that you’re more succeptible. or something. (Did I even spell that right?) Hopefully things worked out and you had a good time celebrating, wine and all. Merry Christmas!
Oh, a little shout out to you in my blog today. :)

What kind of cookies go with wine. See, I get caught up in the little things, like matching wines. That is why I prefer Scotch, no worries about whether it is meat, fish or cookies. It goes with everything.
Trenches of Mommyhood says
It’s not Christmas unless someone is running a fever, right? We had one of those too. Dammit.
