Sleep….Who Needs It?

by Mama Kat on 12/21/2009 · 42 comments

(In light of the fact that this Thursday is Christmas Eve and I’ll technically be on holiday, we’re going to skip Writer’s Workshop…sorry gang.)

I decided I don’t need to sleep.

Hear me out.

If get up every morning around 6ish…and go to bed each night around 1ish…just IMAGINE the blogging I could get done. The informational tutorials I could write! The funny posts I could crank out! The twittering I could do! The comments I could leave!! I could do it all….hours and hours of doing it ALL!!!

Functioning on five hours of sleep is totally do-able. Right? I mean…throw on a hoodie in the morning, grab a coffee and I’ll be good to go.

So I did it. I stayed up until 1am last night. Took my time on my own post, commented on a few, tweeted a bit, edited pictures, read some more, took a shower and lights out at 1am.

The doorbell rang six hours later as I was snuggled up with Laina. I was on my feet before my eyes were opened.

It was 7:05. Seems as though sleepy Kathy likes to push the snooze button. Two parents waited patiently in the pouring rain while I stood in the middle of my bedroom trying to figure out what the hell was going on.

I’m standing in a tank top…..parents are here….it’s after seven….CRAP!

I shoveled through the dirty clothes laying on my floor and managed to find a pair of sweats and as I raced downstairs to meet them Victor E. started barking. The parents greeted me with stifled giggles (thankfully not annoyed) and my alarm upstairs started going off.

Barking dog, screaming alarm, chatty parents…all of the commotion woke up Laina and it took me until after 8am to bring order to the chaos I created by sleeping in.

Soooo…..

I decided I need to sleep again.

nighty night

I love sleep. Sleep is my friend. I love a warm cozy bed, a few small furry dogs and maybe even a husband or a kid.

Sleeping in sounds nice. I haven’t done it rightfully in at least, um how old is #1, oh yeah, 8 years. And, every time I do, by mistake, of course, bad things happen. Very bad things. Happy holidays to you. Try to get some sleep:)

Victor E. has really taken to you, hasn’t he? I mean, look how cute he is snuggled next to you!

I know of some people who dont’ need much sleep – my mom is one of them … I, however, am not. If I don’t get at least 6 hours of sleep (preferably, 7+), I’m a mess.

I get by on about four or five hours a night…and a three hour nap, starting at one pm.

And from 3pm to 4pm? I hear The Boy, who is laughing approximately every 22 seconds at something he sees online.

Now that’s some good sleep.

I hate when that happens.

Its funny that you posted about this b/c I was just thinking the other day, how much stuff I could get done if I didn’t have to sleeping. And by stuff, I mean blogging/tweeting.

But it turns out like you, I too need sleep either that or a live in nanny so that I can stay up late and then when the kids get up, sleep and she can take care of them.

Mmmm…. now that is not bad idea. Wonder if its too late to ask for this for Christams?

I have the opposite problem, I am on Christmas break from school, so no more having to get up at 5:30 am to go to school or stying up late studying and writing. But I can’t sleep past 6 am. Everyone else is asleep but I’m up – blogging!

I wish we did not need sleep but sadly we do!! Atleast you were able to find something *clean* enough to put on in your dirty clothing pile on the floor.

Kuddos to you for trying!!

I have been exceedingly and seriously sleep deprived since my triplets (4 years old)and then surprise baby # 5 (19 months old) were born.

I think I am finally brave enough to admit—-
this is severely affecting my sunny disposition.

I am almost afraid of what may become of me if I actually begin to sleep again………………….

I really miss those days… You know, back in high school where I could stay out until midnight, then read until about 4, sleep until 6 and be up and ready to go… It’s only been like 5 years and now I feel old!

Yeo that has also happened here, one to many snooze button pushes and woken by the knock on my back door-Yep the daycare kids and their mom wondering why I won’t answer the door!

Whole heartedly agree with you, sleep is very much needed. I use to be able to stay up all night, and go the next day. I thin k that changed by my middle 20’s. Thanks for bringing back memories of early daycare mornings though :). I was the owners assistant, and I would often open and close for her. Six am came mighty early!

Sleep is so overrated. (This is coming from a woman who needs at least 10 hours to be able to function without a nap.)

I think sleep is a good plan. Just this morning I decided since it’s work party day I would not set the alarm. 7:19am Noelle walked in – yowza. Usually I’m halfway to work and I haven’t even showered or made the rice dish I’m bringing in. Ack!
Sleep well tonight!

great picture of you and your best buddy. i sleep about the same amount of hours as you, except i spend most of it cleaning, doing laundry, and watching tv. if i am tired mid-day, i put kiddo in front of the tv, pick a great hour long show for him, and nap on the couch seated next to him. he thinks it’s “our” time and it’s really my “cat nap” time. take care.

For weird reasons, my sleep depends on the day. If I have had a super busy, then I need more sleep that night. If my day has been laid back then it seems I don’t need as much sleep. I don’t know if that makes sense but it’s how it works. but if I don’t get at the least 5 hours of sleep then I am usually a waste. Of course, there are always naps. ;) Victor E. is adorable, btw. <3

I fell asleep last night at 6:30am. I kid you not. Currently surviving on 2 to 3 hours at most and definitely feeling the effects.

A new years trip to the doctor is in order as if I don’t sleep soon I may actually lose the marblEs that I’m hanging on to!

Hi. I recently started following you on Twitter and finally had a chance to make it over to your site. This was a really funny post. I do the 6am to 1am thing every day so I’m use to it and really never sleep in, but I have before and can relate to what you wrote. My favorite line that actually made me laugh out loud was “Two parents waited patiently in the pouring rain while I stood in the middle of my bedroom trying to figure out what the hell was going on.” I have a feeling I’m really going to like this site! I’ll be back.

Ugh, oversleeping just makes your whole day crappy. I did it recently, waking at 7:25. Had the oldest showered, fed, backpack/lunchboxed, and at school at 7:52. Whew! The snooze button is a wicked temptress.

Doing my blanket brigade I’ve been up until 1 and snoozing until 7, racing around to get out the door by 8. Good thing I have a job I can semi sleep at…sort of…I mean my eyes are open that counts right?

Welcome to my world. This last year or so, I’ve gotten into a terrible habit of staying up until 12:30-1:00 AM. I just have so many tweets and blog posts and E-mails to catch up on and there’s just never enough time. But it is hard on me. I frequently sleep past 7:00 and am late for work and I swear it’s affecting my memory drastically. I think my New Year’s resolution is going to be to reboot my life and pull my whole schedule back by one hour.

Well, at least your daycare parents were outside your house waiting for you. My hubby leaves for work at 5am and leaves our front door unlocked. So, the one day I overslept, the daycare kids and mom walked right into my bedroom to wake me up at 7:25 am! Thank goodness I wore jammies to bed instead of my birthday suit!

I enjoy your blog and following you on twitter. Merry Christmas, Mama Kat!

I tried doing the 5 hour/night gig. I lasted for about a week or two. Mondays were alright. On Tuesdays I felt a little tired. On Wednesdays I started blanking out during work. Thursdays were bad. Fridays were torture with the two hour lab meeting. Weekends were made for sleeping in.

Thank goodness for my Blackberry. I get my blog reading done on the train. However, it’s still a pain for me to leave comments so I wait until the weekends to do that.

Happy holidays!
