My Son Is Being Bullied

January 21, 2010 · 82 comments

He’s only two.

Too young for an introduction to the harsh realities of this cruel world. And yet on three different occasions, three separate siblings of mine have pointed out that my son’s boots are…ahem….pink. To them I say this:

So what if my son wants to wear rainboots all year long. Who am I to stand in the way of his developing sense of fashion? And no they’re not pink, they’re red. And no they are not hand me downs from Laina’s closet, they were given to him by a friend who also happens to be a boy. And yes I do realize his feet have likely grown this year, but the boots still fit and he still likes to wear them. And no he does not need a pair of Spiderman boots where you can clearly see they’re meant for boys, he likes his red boots. And yes I realize that red and white make pink, BUT THEY’RE NOT PINK…THEY’RE RED AND HE’S VERY MUCH SO THE MANLIEST OF MAN CHILDREN thankyouverymuch.

Its sad to see such things happening at so young an age…I hope all goes well…the boots are sweet and I dont think they look girly at all

Mama Kat January 22, 2010 at 7:43 am

They’re not girly. I keep reminding my brother that it was HE who dressed in girly costumes with us when we were little. Hahaha…he has no room to judge out boots. ;)

I’m with you, there’s nothing wrong with the boots, they’re pretty awesome actually. My boys rock rain boots, not usually when it rains though… funny how that works.

As a former preschool assistant, I’ve seen many boots, Spidey jammies, Princess Belle dresses, etc., If it makes your child feel more empowered by choosing their ensemble for the day, they just might be more open to learning new life skills and curricula that are taught at their level. For his third year of life, my son wore Ninja Turtle t-shirts, khaki shorts and snow boots (We lived in SoCal and only did snow once a year. I was glad to see my money put to use!)

Screw the bullies! Great pics!

Jaci Daugherty January 22, 2010 at 4:52 am

Hmmm…when he’s even wearing them in the pool, you know it’s bad!

So, by the third kid will I just be a chillax, half medicated mommy who laughs over little things like that? Because right now? I’m mega bitch mommy screaming at my first born that she’s not wearing sparkly red still-too-big Dorothy Wizard of Oz shoes in 6 inches of snow.

The other kid’s just jealous and your son probably won’t remember this anyway (good thing you took pictures!)

Reply

There’s nothing wrong with those boots! Who’s bullying him? Whoever it is you can probably snap a picture of them with their finger up their nose (hell all kids do it) and then you have blackmail material. Or, or tell him your gonna tell all the other kids he has cooties! Yeah! That’s a good one!!

Reply

Your little man and mine must have kindred spirits. My youngest wore caterpillar rain boots FOREVER. They were red, green, and blue and had antennas…I know you’ve seen them. He also had a Power Ranger Costume that he never took off. There was a little boy who did make fun of him for the boots, turns out he was jealous and the teasing stopped when he got a pair…go figure! But now my son is a sport fanatic and total guy’s guy..well as much as you can be for a 9 1/2 yr old :)

i think his boots are WAY manly! you tell that bully to shut up or he’ll get a RED rainboot up his butt! i love the fact that he’s wearing them in the pool, btw. What? it’s definitely wet in there, for sure! and the pic with him by the boat – what a great pic.

My middle son was known throughout the neighborhood for his outfits. He could usually be found wearing boots, a bike helmet and mittens. In July.

Contrary to what all the neighbors thought would happen, he did grow up to be a well adjusted, heterosexual male.

All I will say to you …. take pictures. They are wonderful for blackmail when they are in the “cool” teenager phase.

Reply

Soliloquy January 22, 2010 at 6:27 am

Some day you’ll look back with him and say, “Aw, remember those red boots? Those red boots were so great on you.”

And he’ll say, “Yeah. Those boots WERE great on me. I loved those boots.”

And he might not SAY this, but he’ll know he loves you for letting him be who he is and for telling him that who he is… is GREAT.

Reply

Kathy January 22, 2010 at 6:31 am

aww I think they’re cute. My son wore his cousin’s boots until they fell apart. Travis (his cousin) died when he was 7 and Patrick (my son) wanted to keep his boots forever ♥

Kids can be so mean…I’m sorry he’s being teased.

Eh, I’ve known little boys who did wear pink. One ten year old who liked wearing his mother’s mary janes was probably the coolest kid I’d ever met in my life, precisely because he didn’t give care one what anybody thought about anything he wore. That’s my definition of a manly man child!

He looks so sweet enjoying his boots. I hope they fit for a long, long time!

I say so what if your boy wants to wear red, Tinkerbell-esque boots? It is totally his prerogative.

I mean, whenever my boy wants to wear his sister’s red tutu to the grocery store, I welcome the experience with open arms.

Oh, and ask me what we are watching on video currently. If you said, Tinkerbell and the Lost Treasure, you would be correct.

Freedom of expression, people. Freedom of expression.

Oh goodness! So what if they WERE pink? He likes them! He’s a child! I don’t get why people insist on putting gender stereotypes on kids so young. It’s a pet peeve of mine. Pink actually used to be the “boy” color and blue was for girls. I forget the reasoning on that. It changed around WWII.

What a great post. I say there are those battles that you just don’t touch, ever. Shoes are one of them. If they will wear shoes at the age of two, who cares what they look like. Besides that I think they are rather dashing! It would certainly help him stand out in a crowd.

If it makes you feel any better at least they match each other, not something that my five year old’s footwear does very often.

When my son was 3 we went shoe shopping and I told him he could pick out any shoes he wanted. Turns out he wanted Hello Kitty Mary Janes. So I let him have them….and he loved them and wore them until they fell apart and that was the end of them. He picked out Bob the Builder shoes after that. People make too big of a deal out of silly things that don’t matter in the long run. Let them wear silly shoes!

I’ve been fighting this fight for a long time. My 8-year-old son likes Barbies, goes to dance class and would rather design me dresses with his Project Runway kit then play soccer or baseball or .

He also LOVES girls, and has MAD FLIRTING SKILLS he could teach grown men.

But his manly uncles who “tolerate” my encouragement of him to like and do what he wants, would never let their own sons do the same. To which I maturely respond…”Bite me.”
