The House Of Mouse: Black Eye’s Big Surprise

March 11, 2010 · 54 comments

It’s time for a mouse update.

Kainoa Says Goodbye

Before I left for Baltimore I thought it would be wise to bring the babies to the pet store lest I come home to a tank filled with even more babies.

The girls wanted to keep a female white one so we picked one out of the litter and she now resides with her mother.

Let’s keep our fingers crossed they’re both girls.

In the mean time Black Eye has been living alone.

Godspeed Black Eye
And I’ve been watching him because I like having my own Animal Planet here and from what I’ve noticed, Black Eye is unhappy. He needs a companion. I’ve been warned not to put another mouse in with him. He’ll impregnate a female mouse and he’ll fight a male mouse and none of that even matters because I already know what Black Eye wants.

Maile and Black Eye

He wants his wife back.

He wants his wife and what’s left of the children he created with her and he wants to be a family again. He climbs the bars of his cage, he chews at them vigorously, he’s constantly looking for a way out and he didn’t use to be like that.

Kainoa Says Goodbye

Who am I to stand in the way of the dreams of a pet mouse?

You might not like the decision I decided to decide.

Black Eye is getting neutered today.

I called the vet and it’s all set up. She has neutered/spayed guinea pigs and hamsters, but has never done a mouse. It’s risky. She sounds confident. But she warned me that we could lose him. I’m nervous.

Kainoa Says Goodbye

I don’t want Black Eye’s blood on my hands, but I also don’t want him trapped in this cage for the rest of his life without his family, so as you can see I had no other options. HE BACKED ME INTO A CORNER DAMMIT! I cannot be held responsible for his death.

Please don’t die Black Eye. My oh my how I will cry. Stay alive Black Eye. Amen.

Here I am breaking the news to the girls:

Did I ever show you this one of White Eye moving the babies one by one to their new house (the one I proudly put together for them)?

Did Black Eye make it?? Click here and find out.

Dang those are big mice! It’s so funny to watch mama pulling those babies into their new home….it’s like she’s saying “Get over here, get in here….HURRY”
I’ll say a prayer for Black Eye….he’ll be all set and home in no time!

You are so kind. Black Eye will do fine I’m sure! Does the vet seem to think that Black Eye will still love his wife if he doesn’t have the marital urge? It should be interesting, keep us updated!

And you are really making me want to go get a pet mouse. I had them as a kid. BUT, we have cats and rescued kittens. Our little hamster became a victim. Very sad, so we better not.

I’m not even sure how to respond to this. Should I say a prayer for little Black Eye’s cajones? Offer sympathy? Good luck?

Black Eye is the luckiest mouse on the planet … granted, he may not feel that way after he realizes his coconuts are gone, but at least he’ll be with his family!

Oh my gosh…..as much as I do not like mice……your post made me smile!!!!

Ok, I’m going for it.

BWWAAHAHAHAHAHAHA You are getting a mouse neutered. LOL Oh Lord. That is hilarious.

You are way more tender hearted than I am. I would just take his little butt back to the store or set him free in the wild so he could satisfy his urges however he wanted.

You are a good momma Kat. Don’t ever let anyone tell you different.

Were the last words I saw in this video really, “Godspeed Blackeye”?

I am alerting the prayer network now.

Kat. Sometimes they want to get back to the babies to EAT THEM.

But um, hopefully not.

I feel your love for small things. I have big hamster love over here. I had to have my precious Google put down when he was not doing well. The Vet thought I was crazy…telling me it would happen naturally in 24 -48 hours. Yeah 24-48 hours of HELL FOR GOOGLE.

Good for you Kat. Do it. I will say a little mousey prayer today.

We will for sure have black eye in our prayers. There is nothing more difficult than to see a member of the family sad and lonely.

Love and Prayers,

You crack me up. Having a mouse neutered. Too funny.

And I cannot believe I just sat and watched two mouse videos. I hate mice. I shouldn’t say that since I love all animals, but mice…I don’t know. Mice and snakes.

The one of White Eye moving her babies was really cute though. I love watching mama animals with their babies. Even mice and snakes.

Ahhhhhhhh I can’t watch! My husband *needed* my speakers from work so he can listen to music at his work. This blows, I’m going to have to wait until tonight to watch the video! The little things that *ruin* my day, :)
Oh, and I can’t believe you even thought of this, neutering a mouse would have NEVER crossed my mind. You are DEDICATED!

WOW! They can “fix” mice…who knew??? Watched the vidoe this AM my boys were looking over my shoulder…they want a mouse now, thanks. :) I told them we would stick with the boring hermit crabs for now! Hope Black Eye makes it!

that mom moving her baby is the grossest thing I’ve ever seen. Mice creep me out. My boys ever try to bring mice home, they will be fixed. sick. :S *gagging*

AJ and I thoroughly enjoyed watching White Eye move her babies. I hope Black I does ok at the vet! Eek!

Reply

Justine March 12, 2010 at 10:01 am

Please tell me you’re kidding. Please. Because if you actually are taking Black Eye to the vet today to have his balls cut off, I’m going to have to call you all kinds of crazy. I mean, for a MOUSE?

And I’ll tell you exactly what his problem is and save you a hundred bucks or so. He’s not depressed because he’s alone in there. He’s depressed because he’s a boy and his cage is PINK! You mouse loser!

Okay, all kidding aside (no really, I’m totally serious) I loved the videos, especially the last part of the first one because of how the kids are laughing. That is just too damn cute.

Now get a life, k?

Justine :o )

I am laughing so hard right now, but I can’t decide what is more disturbing: the fact that you have pet mice, a rodent that most people scream, throw pans at and go nuts when they see one, OR the fact that you’re spending money to neuter the said rat. I do know one thing, you’re making Bob Barker proud.

Reply

Jen March 12, 2010 at 10:09 am

I can’t believe that you are actually going through with this. I hope that Black Eye comes home safe and sound.

Oh and I love seeing you interact with your kids. They (and you) are so cute.

Too cool, what we won’t do for our kids pets. A little over a month ago we adopted a gecko, I’m sure you’ve seen the pictures on my blog. Anyway I never would have pictured myself squishing the heads on meal worms so they won’t eat their way out of Bob’s stomach or buying crickets for his other meals, but here I am doing it every day. Children and pets what fun.

There is a very sick and twisted curiosity that comes with the question: how does one neuter a mouse?

Reply

Shelley March 12, 2010 at 3:40 pm

Your little girls laugh is adorable! And I have never heard of neutering a mouse before…that’s very kind of you to look out for his feelings like that! :-) I hope the surgery goes well!

And I have never seen a mouse move her mice like that! She was quick!! I wonder if it hurts them.

I want to Follow you but I cant seem to find a way to do that…

Reply

Seriously, your mouse drama is too much for me. Maybe it’s the wine (yummy delicious wine) or the fact that I’m completely sleep deprived but what ever the combination, I can’t stop laughing.
Geez woman, don’t you know my husband is trying to study. A giggling wife does not produce a conducive environment in which to study. Sorry he’s boring.

Girl, you take commitment to a whole new level! I have to say, you’re almost making me wish we had gotten a mouse instead of a hamster. We can only let our hamster out in the bathroom with the door closed, because he just wants to run AWAY from us and he is FAST. Your little guy is kinda social. But then I guess that’s why you’re spending the big bucks to get him neutered. Hope your happy little family is happy–and little–ever after for a long long time.

As a girl who has neutered a pet rat, I can tell you you’re doing the right thing. :)
Black eye will be so happy back together with his little family. Hope the surgery goes OK!

Megan (Best of Fates) March 13, 2010 at 8:47 am

I didn’t even know that was a possibility, but I definitely agree with your decision. I can’t imagine just making him live alone and be depressed for the rest of his mouse life.

Reply

Lourie March 13, 2010 at 9:22 am

I had no idea something like that could be done on something so small. (No offense BE I am sure you are hung like a rat) best of luck to the little..errr big guy. Keep us posted.

I didn’t know you could neuter a mouse! Kudos to you for trying to make the little guy happy. We went through the mouse thing too when my kids were young.
