Writer’s Workshop: Spirits Steal Things

June 2, 2010 · 77 comments

The spirits took it.

Have I written about this before? The mystery of the missing coloring book? Lord knows my family has heard the story a billion times…

I was about eight years old and it was not long after my Dad died…I was convinced I was being followed by “spirits”. When I concentrated really hard I could get them to do stuff…like cause the wind to blow a specific tree, that kind of thing.

On this particular day I was in my room minding my own business, coloring a picture in my brand new Fluffalumps coloring book. As I reached for a crayon, my coloring book slipped beneath the table…and here’s where it gets tricky…when I went to grab the coloring book it was NOT THERE! I spun around in circles, searched the closet, checked under the bed, called out to anyone possibly hiding, but found nothing. Not one person in the room with me and absolutely zero trace of my beloved coloring book.

Later, my cousin came over to play. I told her about my problem and we decided to really search the premises. It HAD to be somewhere right? But after combing every room in the house we sat perplexed. I thought about the spirits and how maybe they thought it was funny to take someone’s things and hide them. Maybe they wanted a coloring book of their own. I closed my eyes and envisioned the spirits leaving my coloring book in the one place we had not looked.

“I’ve got it!” I shouted, as I sprang to my feet, “there’s only one place it can be!!”

My cousin followed me as we made our way to the back porch that overlooked a heavily forested ravine. The porch was a tab bit spooky and we rarely played in that area.

But lo and behold…as we turned the corner at the edge of the house…what did thine eyes beget but my Fluffalumps coloring book sitting on the back STEPS!

I swear it was the spirits at work…there’s no other explanation.

Now it’s your turn!

Choose a prompt, post it on your blog, and come back and sign Mr. Linky. Be sure to sign up with the actual post URL and not just your basic blog URL (click on the title of your post for that URL). For good comment karma try to comment on the three blogs above your name!!

The Prompts:

1.) I sometimes laugh when I’m uncomfortable…or being yelled…or in church…or at a funeral. Write about a time when you laughed at an inappropriate time.
2.) “What did you once lose? Write about your search to find it again.”
3.) What current event do you feel strongly about? Write an opinion post!
4.) Begin each line of your post with “have you ever”.
5.) Who doesn’t call or write you enough? Write about that person.

Are you sure it wasn’t a more physical force that hid the coloring book? {*grin*}

Okay, that’s totally creepy. Had any pictures been colored that you hadn’t done? I have the chills!

Reply

Erin June 2, 2010 at 9:48 pm

I wouldn’t doubt that is true! Did you beat up the spirit for moving your coloring book? lol

Reply

Julie@my5monkeys June 2, 2010 at 9:54 pm

I’ve had things disappear from me too. I knew where it was.

angie June 2, 2010 at 10:04 pm

I love how you make everything including a lost coloring book sound interesting.

Wow that actually gave me chills! :)

Those coloring books were to die for….even those who had passed to the other side wanted a turn! Odd…very odd.

If you concentrate hard enough, do you think the spirits will tell you where Jimmy Hoffa is? Or my high school class ring?

Thank them in advance for me, ok?

Kathy June 3, 2010 at 12:32 am

I always wondered what happened to the other sock. I bet it was ghosts this whole time!

Reply

Dominique June 3, 2010 at 12:34 am

I too have things disappearing from me to have them pop up at all the weirdest places.

Reply

Jen June 3, 2010 at 2:00 am

So do the spirits still take things or have the left you alone?

I think they may have moved over here b/c darn-it, I can’t find my car keys.

I lose stuff all the time. Think the spirits are at my house too? Only I seem to not find my stuff until many moons later when I am looking for something else.

You have such a knack for great story telling! Did the spirits do any coloring? That’s pretty creepy, but I’m sure there is a logical explanation.

I like your prompts this week!

Now it would have been even more spooky if the coloring book had been colored in by the spirits. Thanks for the morning smile!!

That is very weird and only the sort of thing that would freak a kid out until she was an adult! Fluffalumps were a favorite in my house…we had them all…okay, maybe just three, but that’s all we needed! The Spirits…love it!

Reply

Diane June 3, 2010 at 3:22 am

Spooky stuff! Maybe I should check the back porch for all the missing socks around here!

I’m still searching for some fun lovin’ rainbow undies that I bought several years ago and hid away as a gift. They completely vanished!

Reply

Jenners June 3, 2010 at 3:47 am

Instead of spirits, did you ever consider there is a time-space continuum warp hole where you dropped it that moved it to the back porch? I think that is a much more reasonable explanation. : )

I used to think if I just concentrated hard enough, I had the Force (a la Star Wars). I spent an hour once trying to move a rock with just my brain waves.

As for the spirits…lalalalala…can’t think about it.

That’s it! From now on I’m blaming the spirits for everything that goes missing in this house. I don’t think I could have gotten up the courage to go look in the ravine, though. Creepy.

That was a great story with just the right amount of creepy added to it. We have a similar spirit in our house named NOT ME!!! Thanks for sharing.

Reply

KLZ June 3, 2010 at 5:03 am

I agree – it must have been spirits. Maybe you can ask them to find my phone too?

Reply

Pua June 3, 2010 at 5:12 am

Oh my family is perpetually haunted by the spirits of lost family members. It’s nothing new, but doesn’t make it any less creepy when stuff mysteriously happens.

Reply

Peg June 3, 2010 at 5:18 am

OK, that would be enough to freak out an adult, much less a child. I think they steal stuff from me too because things that I KNOW are one place will show up in a totally weird and off the wall place where I would NEVER put them. Dang spirits!

Tylaine June 3, 2010 at 5:24 am

Wow thats a crazy story. My best friend’s Dad was like a Dad to me and granpa to my oldest. When he died , he died in his home , for a long time my daughter was afraid to go in the house because she saw the tall man standing at the door. She did not know that he died there and he was tall , I think she was about 5 or 6. She used to say it was her uncle chris who was also tall . I guess that was how she related the figuer. Things that make you say hmmmmmmmm

I used to think there were “spirits” stealing mates to socks. Then I found them under the agitator of my washing machine! lol

Reply

Those darn spirits……hate it when they steal stuff.

Reply

Michelle June 3, 2010 at 11:35 am

That’s totally weird. We’ve had some pretty inexplicable things happen in our family too – things have gone missing, and have slid across counters right before our eyes.

I’m not crazy! The same thing happened to me when I was around 10. I lost a beloved toy under the most mysterious circumstances. One minute it was there. The next minute it wasn’t. I searched high and low and couldn’t find it. I literally found it one year later in a drawer that was never used in my parent’s bedroom. It was weird.
Anyway, I had a lot of fun with this week’s prompts (again). In fact, if you’re looking for some pointers when it comes to bringing sexy back you might want to stop by and read my post! Have a great day Kat.

In this house, we don’t have spirits, but we do have the “Not-me” ghosts. They color on the walls, spill milk, mess up the living room…..

Not finding stuff is the great nemisis in my life. However, I finally started praying, “O.K. God; you know where it is, so please put my eyes on it.” And, you know what? It works 97% of the time. It is a great stress reducer!

Lourie June 6, 2010 at 6:02 pm

The first house we lived in was haunted. Even my mother claims that to be true. So if mom says it was so, than it was real. Some houses are just like that. And that house definitely was a strange one.
