The spirits took it.
Have I written about this before? The mystery of the missing coloring book? Lord knows my family has heard the story a billion times…
I was about eight years old and it was not long after my Dad died…I was convinced I was being followed by “spirits”. When I concentrated really hard I could get them to do stuff…like cause the wind to blow a specific tree, that kind of thing.
On this particular day I was in my room minding my own business, coloring a picture in my brand new Fluffalumps coloring book. As I reached for a crayon, my coloring book slipped beneath the table…and here’s where it gets tricky…when I went to grab the coloring book it was NOT THERE! I spun around in circles, searched the closet, checked under the bed, called out to anyone possibly hiding, but found nothing. Not one person in the room with me and absolutely zero trace of my beloved coloring book.
Later, my cousin came over to play. I told her about my problem and we decided to really search the premises. It HAD to be somewhere right? But after combing every room in the house we sat perplexed. I thought about the spirits and how maybe they thought it was funny to take someone’s things and hide them. Maybe they wanted a coloring book of their own. I closed my eyes and envisioned the spirits leaving my coloring book in the one place we had not looked.
“I’ve got it!” I shouted, as I sprang to my feet, “there’s only one place it can be!!”
My cousin followed me as we made our way to the back porch that overlooked a heavily forested ravine. The porch was a tab bit spooky and we rarely played in that area.
But lo and behold…as we turned the corner at the edge of the house…what did thine eyes beget but my Fluffalumps coloring book sitting on the back STEPS!
I swear it was the spirits at work…there’s no other explanation.
Dan says
Are you sure it wasn’t a more physical force that hid the coloring book? {*grin*}
I'm a full-time mummy says
Yeay! I’m early today! I chose the same prompt too! :D
Cheryl says
Okay, that’s totally creepy. Had any pictures been colored that you hadn’t done? I have the chills!
Erin says
I wouldn’t doubt that is true! Did you beat up the spirit for moving your coloring book? lol
Julie@my5monkeys says
I’ve had things disappear from me too. I knew where it was.
angie says
I love how you make everything including a lost coloring book sound interesting.
BigMamaCass says
Wow that actually gave me chills! :)
Stef says
Those coloring books were to die for….even those who had passed to the other side wanted a turn! Odd…very odd.
June Freaking Cleaver says
If you concentrate hard enough, do you think the spirits will tell you where Jimmy Hoffa is? Or my high school class ring?
Thank them in advance for me, ok?
Kathy says
I always wondered what happened to the other sock. I bet it was ghosts this whole time!
Dominique says
I too have things disappearing from me to have them pop up at all the weirdest places.
Jen says
So do the spirits still take things or have the left you alone?
I think they may have moved over here b/c darn-it, I can’t find my car keys.
cheri says
wow, this is creepy…
parenting BY dummies says
Dang, don’t you hate those dirty, thieveing spirits?! I know I do. Fo sho.
Katina says
I lose stuff all the time. Think the spirits are at my house too? Only I seem to not find my stuff until many moons later when I am looking for something else.
Los says
That is one spooky story …. or maybe not spooky, but interesting …
Sorta Southern Single Mom says
Linking up for the first time today and also writing about things lost!
Karen, author of "My Funny Dad, Harry" says
You have such a knack for great story telling! Did the spirits do any coloring? That’s pretty creepy, but I’m sure there is a logical explanation.
I like your prompts this week!
dusty earth mother says
that story actually gave me shivers…
Lara says
Now it would have been even more spooky if the coloring book had been colored in by the spirits. Thanks for the morning smile!!
Deb Dunlevy says
Ooohhh…Spooky. There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
Rebecca says
That is very weird and only the sort of thing that would freak a kid out until she was an adult! Fluffalumps were a favorite in my house…we had them all…okay, maybe just three, but that’s all we needed! The Spirits…love it!
Diane says
Spooky stuff! Maybe I should check the back porch for all the missing socks around here!
cara mamma says
Wow….that is spooky! Thanks for the great prompts!
Aging Mommy says
I finally managed to write about one of the prompts! So I made it! I think things lost is going to be a popular prompt today.
I like your story today of magical childhood mysteries and Fluffalumps.
write-brained says
Hmmm… I believe you ;-)
Dawna says
I’m still searching for some fun lovin’ rainbow undies that I bought several years ago and hid away as a gift. They completely vanished!
Jenners says
Instead of spirits, did you ever consider there is a time-space continuum warp hole where you dropped it that moved it to the back porch? I think that is a much more reasonable explanation. : )
I used to think if I just concentrated hard enough, I had the Force (a la Star Wars). I spent an hour once trying to move a rock with just my brain waves.
Kattia says
I really think thats it!!
Funkidivagirl says
So that’s where things go that I lose….to your childhood spooky back porch!
Shell says
I forgot about the fluffalumps!!!!
As for the spirits…lalalalala…can’t think about it.
Trippin' Mama says
That’s it! From now on I’m blaming the spirits for everything that goes missing in this house. I don’t think I could have gotten up the courage to go look in the ravine, though. Creepy.

first time linking up!!
Lindsay @ Just My Blog says
That’s a spooky story Mama Kat. Seriously. Weird.
This week’s prompt turned into way more than I expected to write…Turned into a “Pour Your Heart Out” as well. Who knew?
Marcy Able says
That was a great story with just the right amount of creepy added to it. We have a similar spirit in our house named NOT ME!!! Thanks for sharing.
KLZ says
I agree – it must have been spirits. Maybe you can ask them to find my phone too?
Pua says
Oh my family is perpetually haunted by the spirits of lost family members. It’s nothing new, but doesn’t make it any less creepy when stuff mysteriously happens.
Peg says
OK, that would be enough to freak out an adult, much less a child. I think they steal stuff from me too because things that I KNOW are one place will show up in a totally weird and off the wall place where I would NEVER put them. Dang spirits!
Tylaine says
Very interesting! :) watch out for those Spirits….they’re tricky.
Great writing.
Sunshine says
Great, great, great spooky story. Add it to my list of: Why I Love Mama Kat.
Julie says
Spirits take things in my house all the time. My kids like to call them “Not Me” and “I Don’t Know”
D says
If you run into those spirits, can you ask them what happened to my Citizens of Humanity jeans? ;)
Ginny Marie says
The spirits are always at work in our house…they move my five year olds things constantly. (especially her shoes!)
MeAgain says
It’s my first time. Be gentle with me
Kattia says
Wow thats a crazy story. My best friend’s Dad was like a Dad to me and granpa to my oldest. When he died , he died in his home , for a long time my daughter was afraid to go in the house because she saw the tall man standing at the door. She did not know that he died there and he was tall , I think she was about 5 or 6. She used to say it was her uncle chris who was also tall . I guess that was how she related the figuer. Things that make you say hmmmmmmmm
Knees and Paws says
Truly unexplainable by logic!
Sarita says
This is my first time participating, I hope to be back often. I tried adding a button to my blog but the image will not show up – am I doing something wrong aside from just pasting the code?
Thank you for the prompts!
Jeanette@Bliss says
Spooky!!!
Rachel @ Mommy Needs a Vacation says
Creepy creepy! Those coloring books rock.
liz says
that makes perfect sense in an 8 year old’s mind! :)
VandyJ says
Those spirits are sneaky things. At our house the gremlins take things and I swear the house eats things.
C. Michael Fontes says
Woo hoo! This is super rad! Thanks!
Shelley says
I used to think like that too. But seriously, what else could it be?? That’s kind of weirding me out right now…
Natalie says
Yep…it had to be the spirits ;)
Poppy says
Do the spirits follow your children or do they skip a generation?
Cari says
Yikes! Creeeeepy!
lucy says
Crazy story! I had a recorder (as in a cheap plastic musical instrument) that disappeared. Except I never found it. Glad to hear the spirits returned your coloring book :)
MamaStephF says
I used to think there were “spirits” stealing mates to socks. Then I found them under the agitator of my washing machine! lol
Kristina says
Those darn spirits……hate it when they steal stuff.
Michelle says
That’s totally weird. We’ve had some pretty inexplicable things happen in our family too – things have gone missing, and have slid across counters right before our eyes.
Valorie says
Spirits are sneaky, I’m telling you.
Melani says
Hey Mama Kat! I have been wanting to do a writers workshop because I love to write and finally found one I could write on! Love your workshops!
Foursons says
No way! Really?!
Amanda (missmom2u) says
I have a similar problem involving spirits and my car keys….
jen says
Mysterious.
Interesting.
Hard to believe.
Kristi {at} Live and Love...Out Loud says
I’m not crazy! The same thing happened to me when I was around 10. I lost a beloved toy under the most mysterious circumstances. One minute it was there. The next minute it wasn’t. I searched high and low and couldn’t find it. I literally found it one year later in a drawer that was never used in my parent’s bedroom. It was weird.
Anyway, I had a lot of fun with this week’s prompts (again). In fact, if you’re looking for some pointers when it comes to bringing sexy back you might want to stop by and read my post! Have a great day Kat.

In this house, we don’t have spirits, but we do have the “Not-me” ghosts. They color on the walls, spill milk, mess up the living room…..
Bethany @ Imperfect Mom says
That is freaky! You’ve got me really wondering what the heck happened! My Grandma has always insisted that missing things go into the “Twilight Zone” for a while until they reappear later.
AJ Collins says
:) First time visiting.. first time writing to your prompt… I love this! SO MUCH FUN! :)

Not finding stuff is the great nemisis in my life. However, I finally started praying, “O.K. God; you know where it is, so please put my eyes on it.” And, you know what? It works 97% of the time. It is a great stress reducer!
Julie @ Practically Spent says
The neighbors of my grade school had a handmade wood stick cross in the ground where they had buried a dog. The cross moved. I’m still sure of it to this day.
Aurora says
Definitely can’t blame it on old age
amy says
Creepy!! My mom is convinced she saw proof of ‘spirits’ after her parents died. Something about a vacuum cleaner turning on and it wasn’t even plugged in…who knows for sure?!
Lourie says
The first house we lived in was haunted. Even my mother claims that to be true. So if mom says it was so, than it was real. Some houses are just like that. And that house definitely was a strange one.
