She tried to save me from myself. How many times has my Mom given me sound advice only to be dutifully ignored?
You better leave for your road trip before three…that’s when traffic starts getting heavy.
Pashaw.
Simplify your life Kathy, more kids in the daycare are not worth your sanity.
Oh please.
Save your money, you never know when you might need it in an emergency…
Oops.
I had to learn that sometimes she tells me things I don’t want to hear because she’s looking out for my best interest. Like that time I asked her for a donut leftover from breakfast. The glazed sugar glistened on the counter as she prepared dinner. Clearly no one was interested in eating it:
It took me a long time to get that she’s not putting her two cents in just to hear herself speak. Or to make my life difficult. Or to to deprive me from me life’s pleasures, such as a plate of glazed donuts.
She’s putting her two cents in because she’s been there. And I know this because I’m the Mom now and I am dutifully ignored everyday. And my kids are still babies. I have many more days of being ignored to put in. Why do we bother learning the lessons if the lesson demands to be re-taught three times over by each of our kids. Why don’t we listen to our mothers?
My Mom is a wise wise old lady and her job has been a thankless one…and I’m glad she still loves me.

Excellent cartoons! I really should have listened to my mom more too. Oops.

No, no. Children’s hearing develops in such a way to block out most of what their mothers tell them. It is a genetic fact. Didn’t your mother ever tell you to pay attention in lessons?
BJ_Mama says
WHATEVER! Like I haven’t used that line before! (they’ll never eat them if I say the dog peed on them…..*takes donuts and hides them in the secret stash to eat later*)

I have a friend who actually listens to her mom – and her life is good.
The rest of us seem to need to learn those lessons from mom in our own way, oftentimes to our own detriment.
And now, as the old lady who know knows it all, I am not out there dispensing advice left and right – I don’t meddle in their lives (I didn’t appreciate it when my mom meddled). If asked, I offer my opinion (mostly telling them to do what I DIDN’T); but if the kids don’t ask, then they’ll find out the hard way, like I did.

My Mom is pretty awesome too. And even better, she doesn’t give advice unless I ask… most of the time. But boy when I ask do I ever get an earful. But like you, I realize that she’s been there and she knows a lot more about stuff than I do.

My mom has been gone ten years but I still hear her voice. Talking to my kids. Maybe the reason it all works this way is so that when kids leave us they will have those “tapes” securely stored in their brains for critical moments when it REALLY matters. Awesome post!

Love your cartoons. I always think of your mother, and how patient she was with raising 6 children on her own. In a time when it was very hard for that to happen.
She is wondrous, and you are so blessed.
But, you obviously know that.
Very nice.
Mama Kat says
Well patient isn’t exactly the word *I* would use…but yes, she’s definitely a saint!

Love the cartoon. I think your mom sounds amazing. Just the right about of strict and loving. She had to have been great….look how you turned out. Right? :) I love this campaign!
Bianca says
Mom is a wise OLD lady? I don’t know Mama Kat, I would certainly never call MY mom an OLD lady…wise or otherwise.
Mama Kat says
Don’t tell Mom I called her old mkay?
Jessica says
I definitely think this is a “been there, done that” post for everyone. And, one day we will all be dutifully ignored, too. JOY!

so true. so true.
Kathy says
My mom would have totally let me eat the dog pee doughnuts because she’s TOTALLY INSANE (I can get away with saying that because my mom doesn’t believe in blogs <–see? INSANE)
Lourie says
When I was 16, my mom didn’t know anything. She was clueless to the real world. When I was 21, my mom knew everything! She was clued into the world around her. I still turn to her for advice because she knows things I don’t. And she always will.

Love it! I am already starting to hear myself use some of my parents favorite expressions such as “you don’t know you are born” which I always thought such a ridiculous thing to say and yet here I am now, coming out with that and other such gems and no, I am not being listened to either :-)
Los says
I can’t wait to start not being listened to! We have a little one on the way – end of November … should be something … me being a dad and all.
Michelle says
Mom’s are never listened to it seems until the child has grown up, moved out, and has started a family of their own. Then, it’s like “how did she do it?” Mom’s are wonderful and should be celebrated everyday! I love my mom – she’s the best, and am so grateful to have wonderful kids who really do love and appreciate me, even if they forget to pick up their toys and take the dished to the sink. ;)

That’s too funny. Love when you do the cartoons
Jen says
You had dog pee in your mouth. ahhahahahahhahahahahahahaha!
And I am totally not laughing at you but with you, I promise.
Angelia Sims says
Don’t marry that guy he is bad news.
He sure was Mom! How many times have I had to say she was right about “stuff”? LOL. And why does it take so long to learn to listen?
:-)

You really ate a dog pee donut!!???? HAHAHAHAHAHA!
