Writer’s Workshop: Who Was That Man?

June 30, 2010 · 104 comments

Describe someone in your life who you might not know as well as you think you know.

Pat is not who I think he is. I hear stories about my husband and find notes left over from his high school days when I clean out our closets, and I find myself stunned.

My husband is a sensitive man. I know he has a golden heart…albeit a bit jaded after a few run ins with dishonest people…he would move heaven and earth for his family. You can be sure of that. I was not surprised to learn that he was often the guy girls talk to on the phone about their problems. The guy that would be there to hear them and counsel them, but rarely date them. I was not surprised to learn that he was a good kid and didn’t cause a bunch of trouble at school.

But when Pat mentioned he had a girlfriend who made the two of them matching pink sweatshirts my interest peaked…

me: Pink??
pat: Yeah…it was no big deal. Pink was in back then.

me: But I mean…did you wear it?
pat: I can’t really remember…I’m sure I did…she designed them.

me: Designed them? What…like embroidered or silk screened or something?
pat: oh you know…back then everything was air brushed.

me: What was on them??
pat: Her’s said “I love Pat” and mine said “I love her”.

me: *shudder at the thought* Are you kidding me???
pat: It was a gift.

me: I just…can’t even fathom you wearing such a thing. What would you do if I bought you something like that?
pat: I’d probably laugh…

me: But you didn’t laugh when she gave it to you…you must have opened it and thanked her and thought it was nice and put it on right away…really try it out, check the fit…did it have a hood?
pat: What does that matter?

me: I JUST NEED TO KNOW…did. it. have. a. hood??
pat: I think it was just a crew neck.

me: Of course it was a crew neck!
pat: What’s wrong with that?

me: It’s just…who was that guy!?! And have I ruined you so completely that you won’t wear a pink sweatshirt declaring your love for me?
pat: You haven’t ruined me. I just grew up.

me: Where’s the love?
pat: I was practically a kid.

me: Where’s all the feeling?
pat: It was a cool shirt back then.

me: WHERE’S THE ROMANCE!?!
pat: I would laugh about it now if I were married to her.

me: YOU WANT TO MARRY HER!?!?!

I don’t even know who he is anymore.

Technically, my daughter wrote the list of 10 things…but they SURE DO make me smile! :-) And, if we want to get all technical and picky–She might have written the 10 things first, but I wrote them, too–right?

I love your writing prompts! And I REALLY LOVE following you on Twitter. You rarely fail to bring a smile or a giggle in a really quiet place, where I probably should not be checking Twitter…

Okay…so that was funny. Isn’t it funny what a man will do for someone that he hasn’t had children with? You would think that once they have kids, NOTHING would hold them back. And yet, it is the opposite. Or maybe it is the sex…they don’t need to wear our pink sweatshirts with words saying he loves us, because guess what…he already scored.
Loved this post…as always!!

My husband would NEVER wear a pink sweatshirt for me. EVER. That is hysterical. You need to have an indentical one made for him and MAKE him wear it for a blog post.

One time i found a love letter from Scott to his ex girlfriend, it felt like twilight Zone. But I guess their changes, growth and experiences are what brought them to us.

My first BF and I (he became my first, or “practice”, husband) had matching Tshirts – they had flowers on them.

I would never wear a matching shirt with The Mister now, unless it was the “I’m with Stupid” tshirt.

We do dumb stuff when we’re young and in love.

I really did laugh out loud (not just lol) at that last line. We gals sure do know how to overreact, don’t we? This sounds like a conversation that might happen between me and my husband. Except I would be throwing things and acting all accusatory.

This was great comic relief after just having cried my eyes out writing my own post. Thanks for the fantastic prompts this week Mama!

WAIT!! Was this in the 80′s??? I REMEMBER when PINK was IN… even for GUYS… Oh! Don’t forget those SKINNY ties. LOL!!

Well, I don’t ASK the hubs to wear PINK for me… I couldn’t stomach it with his coloring… BLEH!

Hmmm… I get more frustrated with things KIDS will do for OTHERS but it’s like pulling their TEETH out to do it for ME!! You know… little things, like GET ALONG… CLEAN up after themselves… NOT make OBNOXIOUS noises… *sigh*

OMGawsh! A custom made pink sweater. You and the kids should tie dye him one just to see if he’d wear it. They are sorta like in again, right? Dumb Dad would never wear anything anyone made him ever. And, he didn’t want to marry anyone anywhere ever either so I have no worries that there may have been another chick who did it for him. He was a pimp. And, I thank you specifically in my post today in case you get a chance to pop over and check it out:)

I remember my freshman year of high school. There was a girl in my homeroom, and about once a week, she wore some sort of pink shirt that said, “Jim’s Girl.” I thought it was tacky and weird.

Funny you mention the ex, I find out snippets of my hubbies relationships. He actually dated a model, and back then he was not as refined as he is now. He does not really know how to answer my bombardment of questions.

Funny dialogue! hahaha… PINK?!?!?!? I remember those airbrushed shirts – I had one when I was 8 that said “Achy breaky heart” on it… now that I think about it, nearly everyone in West Virginia had one of those. Sometimes, I see people who still wear them – coffee/grease stains and all!

I loved your writing prompts this week! They were great!!! Have a good holiday :)

And to think, I was impressed that my husband used to go goth clubbing in full goth regalia (whiteface, liquid eyeliner, black nails, black satin poet shirt, black jeans, combat boots…) with his ex.

Matching airbrushed pink sweatshirts? WAY worse.

Heehee.

We call Mr. Fairway “The Flamingo,” because he wears so much pink. In fact, he wears so many gaudy colors and primps so much that he really should be called “The Peacock.” I would have selected him for “Best Dressed” in my high school yearbook…

Reply

Jennifer July 1, 2010 at 3:50 am

Poor Pat. He does not stand a chance against you.

And you know if you bought him a pink shirt now he would totally have to wear it.

I actually struggled with “People would be surprised to know…” I’ve written so much about my quirks that it felt like there was nothing left.

And then I realized I do have one item left. It involves Technicolor and popcorn.

I remember a salesman who used to come by our office in the ’80s who had a pink shirt that made all of us drool. Yeah, pink was in.

Reply

I like this. Some mystery never killed anyone. However, I have to say, when I picture my man being mysterious it never involves a corny airbrushed 80′s sweatshirt! Too bad he ruined the mystique for you. This was funny. :)

I think it’s so funny how us women can take something as simple as a conversation about a sweatshirt (granted, it was pink and that’s just awesomeness!) and turn it into “You want to marry her?”!

Reply

Heligirl July 1, 2010 at 4:46 am

The things we do when we’re young, stupid and think we’re in love. Sounds more like the girl was a bit insecure and needed to have him wear his declaration. Poor Pat.

Thanks for the weekly writing prompts. I’m enjoying getting the creative juices flowing, even when I’m stressed. Maybe I need it more then. :)

Reply

Mama Kat July 1, 2010 at 6:50 am

No I think it was the thing to do back then. Remember how we would match out best friends and go to school looking the same? Was that just me?

Reply

Tiffany July 1, 2010 at 5:25 am

It’s definitely eye opening when we think we know our spouse and then we realize we don’t REALLY know them. It’s the funny thing about marriage, you take two people who are different that find things in common with each other and love each other then they have to live together, love together but in the end you are still two separate people.

sei and i had been married for four years when we went to watch phantom of the opera (the movie). the first number came on, and i heard someone singing. and i turned to sei to tell him that some loser was singing along with the track, and IT WAS HIM. my husband knows every word to every song in phantom of the opera. and les miserables. and sings them in movie theaters.

you win with the pink sweater, though. that’s way more femmy than phantom.
