I posted this girl fight video on my blog last August.
Laina was trying to take Maile’s umbrella and Maile was doing her best to man handle the situation. What ensued was a lot of girl screaming and poor Laina just couldn’t hang.
I thought it was funny. Now I think it’s obnoxious…I mean they’re super cute, but that minute lasts forever and now I just want to go buy them both umbrellas. It must have been a long day for me, but it’s the perfect demonstration of what it is like raising two young girls just 18 months apart in age.
Since posting the video last year it’s had over seven thousand views and a handful of super articulate comments. I’d like to share some of my favorites:
“Wow what kind of mother are you. My mother has never done that to me. You need a Tutorial on how to take care of a child’s every need. shame on you.”
“this video is so stupid u see they fighting and u older then them BREAK IT UP”
“all of them got bad luck”
“if that was my daughter i would of got a baby belt and woppe those legs hen sun them to bed”
“The little wants you to get da damn umbrella its ashame dat adults aint treatin dey children rite”
It’s a whole different crowd over there on youtube. Classy folks with constructive advice and real concern. I like that.
And I just love how the people spending time on youtube searching for “sister fights” act all disgusted when they actually find them.
Just all around awesome going on over there.

omg. no. people really don’t write like that. please, tell me that they don’t. *covers ears and sings somewhere over the rainbow*

Come on, Kat..u see dat litle un onts thate dang brella.
Loved the comments. They’re awesome. I can see how this could be funny when it first started and after a year has become tiresome. My 5yo and 20 month old have just delved into this and wrestling and tattling (my 20mo trying to tattle that is). All cute the first time, but 3 weeks in I’ve had enough. They are joyous, to be sure. But, I love them so much. Especially when they’re slumbering like little cherubs.

You are hardly horrible for videotaping this. When they’re older they’re going to think this is hilarious (or embarrassing, either way, funny). I also doubt that this scarred them for life. Then again, I wouldn’t take anyone seriously that replaces the word “that” for “dat” and “they” for “dey.”

Wow… that spelling is amazing! lol Youtube commentators seem to all have English as their second language… what a headache.
The movie on the other hand is too funny!

I wonder what the YouTube commenters expected to see when they searched for “sister fights”?
Now it’s fighting over things like an umbrella, but before long it will be fighting over boys, make-up, clothes, jewelry…
I’m stopping by from SITS, and also checking out your Writer’s Workshop page.

Sadly, I’m not surprised that people left comments like that. :(
On the other hand, I found the video humorous, and I’m sure one day, they will as well.
Mama Kat says
It really is a looong minute…when I watch it now I’m like, “oh my gosh just take the umbrella already!”
They love each other very much though (most of the time!) and already giggle when they watch it.

You’ve got to love those youtube comments – you’re right, it’s a different UNIVERSE over there! Amazing. Hopefully the girls find it just as funny now!
Caroline says
I laughed out loud at the comments you posted. TOO FUNNY! Just stopping by from SITS! Blessings galore!

For what it’s worth, I think the video was funny! But what really got me laughing was the comments. I hardly think your kids are going to be damaged by taping what they probably did a million times out of earshot (or maybe you wished it was out of earshot). That’s what siblings do – they fight, make up, and then do it all over again :) Hope your Sunday is great!

YouTube comments make me sad for humanity.

It’s always amazing to me to hear what the general public has to say about me versus what my awesome readers say. The difference is night and day. The answer? The general public are idiots. Our readers are awesome. The end.
Mandi says
That’s insane! I’m surprised these people can even type because they obviously flunked out of school!
I thought the video was hilarious!
Also, I have been reading your blog and should have commented before now… sorry! I’m making it up for it now!
Jen says
I don’t see what the big deal is. I record my children fighting and then make them watch it as punishment so that they will know what I have to do through. I thought all people did this? I guess its just special people like us.
Jennifer says
And here I thought it was great parenting advice to let your kids work out their differences.
I’m always amazed when I read comments on random sites at how illiterate people are. Did they not finish school or did they just not learn anything while they were there?
SaucyB says
WOW. I’m kind of surprised people that dumb can work a computer.
No Excuses says
Oh, how I miss those days! My girls are also 18 months apart and they still fight and make up. Fortunately, it is all done with words! Great video! Let me chime in with the others above about the you tube comments!
Bethany says
I love how Kainoa is like, “Dad, get me outta here. These girls have officially lost it.”
Laura says
Wow.
I thought the commenters were kidding.
No?
Yeesh.
Jamie says
This is great video for graduations or weddings or just family movie night! You were one smart mama for grabbing the recorder…Wish I had been that forward-thinking.
The comments are classics. You might want to save them for the parenting book.

My sister and I were laughing so hard. She has four kids and as I played your video all of them ran over. My 7 year old niece heard the screams and said “I think I know that girl”. Actually it sounds like some of the fights over here.
For the articulate comments, don’t you just love the educated people out in the world?
Seriously love you blog! Thanks for sharing :)
Rachael Rodriguez says
Great fun! The video brought back memories of being a small child with a little sister only 17 months younger than me. :) As for the highly educated and well thought out comments from youtube, well, they were just comedy really. I quite enjoyed the brilliant people of our society voicing their opinions. Thanks for sharing. Love your blog.
Maranda says
HAHA! I think it’s kind of funny too. I especially love how you video taped it instead of stopping it! LOL! But…they have to figure it out right?? And I love how your son was like “whatever.”
But those comments…wow. Full of vocabulary and grammar. A different breed…

I have learned that given the veil of an internet identity people will pretty much say just about anything. I write for a local paper and some of the online comments are so offensive and downright hurtful that I find them repulsive and often choose not to read them. In fact, I think they should be eliminated. Last week a woman lost her only child in a terrible jet ski accident. He was 11 and driving the jet ski alone. The parenting advice expressed to her by “helpfull” posters was, for lack of a better word, hateful. Whatever happened to those without sin can cast the first stone.
K Odell says
I think it is great that you did not feel the immediate need to smooth things over for them- really, they need to learn to work it out for themselves- and I saw no hitting or violence, only a little girl upset she wasn’t getting her way. By no means should you, mom, help her always get her own way.
as for the comments- it reminded me when I was riding by bike on the fourth of July. I was slowly riding on the street when a child turned and darted in front of me- like split second turn and dart. I stopped quickly, missed the child, and received cheers from the crowd. Yay me! Some guy said “Uh, parents- they should watch their children”- he had expected me to agree with him, but I, being a mother of three, understood how quickly kids dart and how we can’t read their minds. I told the guy that. We try to keep our kids happy and safe- and it’s our jobs to set up parameters for them, however, we can’t solve everything and we can’t be prepared for every move and every dumb thing they choose to do. still doesn’t make us bad parents.
brainella says
Don’t you love how everyone has an opinion on how you should handle your children? My sister and I are 16 months apart. That was standard practice for us most days. :)
Lolli says
I guess I shud uv used spell check when I left you those comments on youtube. Oops!
Sherri says
OK, those comments cracked me up!! Nothing like the slice of life you get when you post a youtube video! There are so many new words and phrases in them, I can barely stand it….
Your girls are adorable, even with the pouty/angry faces!!
Julie {Angry Julie Monday} says
dude…now that was some awesome tagging and SEO on You Tube.. ya need to file this in the “How To Properly Tag You Tube Videos for SEO and Traffic” archives and shiznit!
Danielle says
I agree with Bethany. Best part is Kainoa cruising into the frame, all “get me the the fuck out of here, dude. FO REALZ.”
Peg says
The video was cute and funny. The comments even funnier…
Dey is so Arikulat ober dere.
Shirley says
Oh man. The video was awesome. We do stuff like that all the time, except I surreptitiously take pictures from the stairs. The comments made my eyes feel like they needed to bleed. Scary stuff over there!

Oh Dear Gott in Himmel.
Seriously, cannot even watch YouTube (or as I call it now, “BlueTube”) at home for fear of such charming vocabulary popping up on the perimeter for my precocious readers.
(Of course, She-Twin read “F*** this ugly a** bus” on the back of a bus seat en route to a field trip, so maybe I need to use YouTube-ese as a learning tool…)
Hope your wee one is feeling MUCH better…been keeping good thoughts!
Renee says
Lord have mercy; all that bad spelling and poor grammar makes me shudder. Is it wrong that I really hope that none of those comments were posted by former/current students of mine?
Angelia Sims says
Lol! Stepdaughters are 2 years apart and this is sooo familiar.
I have some really ugly comments on my YouTube videos as well. Seriously? Do they have nothing better to do than bash? Ridiculous.
Even weirder, I don’t delete them.
stephanie says
oh good stuff! maybe you should post a video about phonics, spelling, or just plain using the good old english language.
Emmy says
Luckily my videos on YouTube have mostly comment free.
jessica says
mercifully , no one seems to be looking for videos on Hitler giving them a wax job. Lucky me huh?
Mama Kat says
I can just imagine the comments you’d get on that video!!
