Writer’s Workshop: Wakey Wakey

This one time I was sleeping and…

nighty night

This one time I was sleeping and the doorbell rang. I stared at my clock and shot out of bed. When you run a home daycare and parents depend on you to have your door open in the morning so they can throw their kids on your couch and make it to work on time…it’s kind of important that you be awake.

If you’re not awake, you may be forced to throw on the closest pair of yoga pants and a hoodie sans bra/makeup/brushed hair…and greet the parents with morning breath.

Worse yet, is that the doorbell will wake every sleeping body in your home. Your dog will bark in response to the disruptive noise. Your baby will cry in response to the barking dog. And your toddlers will get out of bed far earlier than what is normal for them. You will be left with a chaotic morning as you scramble to get yourself ready for the day while watching a handful of angry and tired children. And you won’t have time to check any of your social media accounts.

I KNOW!

Being late to work is one of the most embarrassing things I can do.

And the parents laugh at me every time.

And yes it’s happened more than once.

But even more embarrassing than every bra-less meet and greet I’ve ever had…was the morning one of the daycare dads decided to come upstairs to wake me up!

******************

Now it’s your turn!

Choose a prompt, post it on your blog, and come back and sign Mr. McLinky. Be sure to sign up with the actual post URL and not just your basic blog URL (click on the title of your post for that URL). For good comment karma try to comment on the three blogs above your name!!

And let me know what you think of the new linky. Trying this one out for a change.

The Prompts:

1.) Dear Mommy and/or Daddy…(write a letter to yourself from one of your children)
2.) This one time I was sleeping and…
3.) Things you oddly obsessed about as a child.
4.) Who needs a vacation when you can spend your summer doing this…
5.) What did you wish for most? Write about a time when it was just too hot.

I had that happen once when I went to drop my kids off my inhome day care…her boyfriend opened the door and was like “what’s up” while wiping the sleep out of his eyes!

It happens! =)

Is this thumbnail linky obnoxious for you?

Wish that the caption for the linky is longer… :)

Reply

Mama Kat August 19, 2010 at 1:50 pm

I changed it to 20 characters…is that better?

He came upstairs to wake you up!??!?! OH EMM GEEE!!!! GROSS!

I like the thumbnail linky!

I accidentally linked to my blog, not the post. But, the post will be the first post until Friday morning. Sorry about that.

Ha, ha! Makes good reading, but I cringed at the thought of myself in your shoes!

This is one of the drawbacks of working from home, you can never make up an excuse for running late like “I was having car trouble” LOL!

Reply

Angel August 19, 2010 at 2:24 am

I am hoping the child that came upstairs to wake you had already been in daycare for a while that day. Not that his parents sent him shimmying up a trellis to your window to wake you up lol. Although I know a few parents I could totally see doing that

Wow – crazy about the dad coming upstairs to wake you up! I probably would’ve hit him in the head with the alarm clock!

I couldn’t do the Linky thing with the thumbnails at work … I’ll try to work on this at home.

Reply

Mama Kat August 19, 2010 at 1:49 pm

Oh no…I wonder why you couldn’t do it at work… That’s not good.

Reply

Scargosun August 19, 2010 at 3:03 am

Whoo hoo! Gettin’ mine in early. I came up with something for number 5. Totally proud of myself. The thumbnail thing is fine. I just wasn’t expecting it early in the morning. :)

HisBell August 19, 2010 at 3:09 am

Ugh… I used to have daycare in my home so I can TOTALLY relate to the bra-less, putting on closest yoga pants scenario!!! LOL I don’t hink I’ve ever had a parent “wake me up” though… that woulda been rough.

Reply

Deb Dunlevy August 19, 2010 at 3:23 am

Wait, he came upstairs!?! Was your door unlocked? How did he get in?
That’s the story I’d like to hear!
Oh, I get so bitter when someone calls or comes to the door in the morning and wakes up my kids (and me, of course). I have always thought you were very brave to have the job you do, and now it’s just been confirmed.

Reply

Jen August 19, 2010 at 3:29 am

Sometimes I have trouble working it but I think that is more user error than the linky.

Its a nice change.

Reply

Jen August 19, 2010 at 3:31 am

Ok, wow I think that is much worse for you to be late for work than me. When I am late, patients just don’t get a nurse, its fine but thankfully, they never come to my house and wake me up.

And my previous comment was in response to your linky question, wonder why it didn’t thread?

Reply

Jennifer August 19, 2010 at 3:45 am

I like the look of it, but it was a little time consuming to put all together. I’m used to pasting my link and clicking and that’s it.

Reply

Mama Kat August 19, 2010 at 1:46 pm

Yeah I was worried about the time…clicking to another page to enter. Is it worth the extra click for a thumbnail? And did thumbnails make you want to click around a little more?

Reply

Jennifer August 19, 2010 at 3:46 am

That would completely throw my day off. I hate oversleeping. I would feel like I was trying to catch up the rest of the day.

Reply

liz August 19, 2010 at 3:47 am

that would be awful! and i know that when i am woken suddenly like that, it’s like I’m walking around in a haze for a while. like my brain isn’t fully functioning.

i think the lack of checking social media would be the hardest to endure, though.

Reply

Stephanie S August 19, 2010 at 3:58 am

ohhh gosh… I hate the feeling of waking up so suddenly! I’m almost dizzy for a while… my brain is mush… and i say things like “my trees are tired” instead of “my legs are tired” (this happened once, on Christmas morning.) I crazy talk when I’m sleepy – i would definitely scare the parents if i were in your position!

alyson: Common Sense, Dancing August 19, 2010 at 4:08 am

I feel your bra-less pain. We’ve got construction going on in my house, and OH WOW do they start early. And since they’re here so damn early, I have to remember to be fully clothed when letting the dogs out, so as not to become one of “those” clients who will be talked about on job sites forever….

{As for the linky, the 15 character limit? Not enough. Never had a problem with getting my site name in before, but 15 is too short….Can we have 25 or 20?}

Reply

Mama Kat August 19, 2010 at 1:45 pm

Changing it to 20 was easy! Done!

Reply

Lolli August 19, 2010 at 4:15 am

I titled my post just for you. :)

I’ve been awakened by a family I was supposed to babysit. Our power had been out for half a day, and they live in our neighborhood, so I assumed they weren’t coming. I mean, no power + 9 kids? Insane. Nope. They had power, and were ready to drop the kids off. I was still groggy. I feel your pain.

Reply

Melissa B. August 19, 2010 at 4:24 am

You and the dog look really, really comfortable, though. I might trade the snuggles for the embarrassment…

Reply

gaelikaa August 19, 2010 at 4:31 am

Oh, being late has always been one of my fortes. I really honestly thought that the braless meet and greet was one of my little peculiarities – it’s squite a relief you know, to read this. And it is NOT because I’m lazy, heaven forbid – it is because I work sooooo hard….

Reply

Angelia Sims August 19, 2010 at 5:00 am

I would totally do that if I worked at home. Zzzzzz! I love the puppy snuggle. Makes me even more sleepy.

I can’t even get the new Linky thing to work. It won’t search for a web image or allow me to upload. :( So if anyone reads down in the comments this far here’s my link…

I do like the thumbnail linky. I find it’s a little easier to read than the links one.

Wow…what a way to wake up in the morning! My son’s daycare provider has had that happen before, but she keeps her door firmly locked until she’s ready for kids to come in. So, if she ever happens to have a sleep-in day, we wait outside patiently. ;) It happens to everyone!

Reply

Kathy August 19, 2010 at 5:27 am

Not really – but I had to post it twice, because I stupidly put my “blog” link in, and not my “post” link. My daughter is reading over my shoulder, btw, and she is agreeing/laughing with the things I’ve written ‘from her’ to ‘me.’ You have such fun ideas for writing.

Reply

Hilarious! I’ve actually fallen asleep on the job. On my desk. After lunch. For more than half an hour. My boss had to wake me up. LOL. He was totally cool about it but I wanted the earth to swallow me whole.

Melissa August 19, 2010 at 5:55 am

I too, run an at home daycare! I have also been woken up by the door bell and had to scramble for everything. :) Glad to know someone else feels the pain!

Peaceful Wishes,

I think I liked the old linky better but this one was not hard to use. That is insane that dad coming up to your BEDROOM to wake you up! Geez!

Reply

Mama Kat August 19, 2010 at 1:47 pm

You think the old one was just cleaner looking and simpler?

Lord knows i’ve been late to work plenty, but the particular indignities of being late to your own home day care are horrifying!

awoken by a phone call or doorbell, fine. awoken by a male client in your bedroom? that is truly awful!

Reply

Joy August 19, 2010 at 6:47 am

been there done that the parent at the door thing that is not them coming to my room. One day hubs turned off the alarm and I was woke up much later to her knocking on my back door with both kids in tow! luckily I know her other than just from the job and I blamed it all on Shane:)

Reply

Lindsey August 19, 2010 at 6:49 am

I hate waking up to a phone call, let alone someone ringing my doorbell. You must be a morning person, at least a little.

And the no time for checking social media accounts?? What??? The horror!!!!!

Looks like the sleeping prompt was popular this week! Of course it’s the one I chose… miss an opportunity to tell the world about my husband talking like a parrot in his sleep? No way!

But waking up late is the worst! It gets the whole day off kilter!!

Alice @ Life With Vivian August 19, 2010 at 7:36 am

That is HILARIOUS! It sounds like something that would happen to me. How embarassing!

Reply

i wrote a post about my summer, and i technically did go on a vacation…but it’s about more than that. Hope that counts!

Reply

hahaha, that is so true! When Leah was in daycare we used an in-home daycare as well. i could always tell the times we woke the owner up!

Reply

Holly S August 19, 2010 at 10:09 am

How did you not go apeshit on the dad who woke you up out of a dead sleep? I probably would’ve jumped up swinging!

Embarassing, but funny as hell. More fun fodder for all of your blog followers!

:-O No way! Oh that’s too funny. And I think the definition of “rude awakening.”

“No I swear you didn’t just wake me up! I was trying on some new clothes all morning and that messed up my hair, and ….No, really, I just ate one of those new shi* sandwhiches but I did brush! No,no, I don’t smoke pot on weekdays! …….Yes, your baby couldn’t be in a safer place, just let me find my bra real quick………..no, no, that’s not it on the lamp shade, that’s just a new art piece I’m testing, but you changed my mind on that one! Alright you have a great day, and don’t worry, when I get the crust out of my eyes I’ll remember your child’s name, I swear!”

I enjoyed your post needless to say….

Reply

Great story! I’ve actually loaded up the kids, packed the van with their crap, sat in the drivers seat, pulled to the end of the driveway before realizing I wasn’t wearing pants so I feel your pain.

Thanks for stopping by my blog and for the nice comments.

If I had a day in your shoes,I’d probably go crazier, if that’s possible. One kid is enough for me, for now.

I love the new linky, will take time to get used to, but I love that it shows thumbnails.

Reply

Raine August 19, 2010 at 6:30 pm

Sounds like our daycare – every once in a while I knock and knock and call, and ring the door bell and call and knock…. sometimes we just sit down outside and wait. She is always very very apologetic and how can I get mad at that?! :D

And I love the linky – I like that I can see which prompt everyone chose before clicking!
