I love it when a storm comes into town because our local media goes berserk. They come up with a catchy name for the storm and act absolutely frantic about wind and/or rain and/or snow that is actually FALLINGFROMTHESKY!!!
Sometimes I get pulled into the hype and watch the trees blow as I desperately call family and friends to see how they’re fairing in THE WIND STORM OF THE YEAR!! (in January.)
This week we’re getting hit by ARCTIC BLAST 2010!
The snow fell, we watched the streets, we followed the news, the schools closed down, their was turmoil on the roads, and then our power went out.
I called my Mom, who happens to take the storm advisories far too seriously and she was all,
mom: Well you guys just bundle up and stay put! Those roads are treacherous right now…THE ARCTIC BLAST 2010 IS UNSTOPPABLE!
me: I think we’ll be okay, I’ll let the kids play with these candles and matches in their bedrooms and I think I have a good hour left on my laptop for a blog post tonight. Thank God for my wireless connection.
mom: But Kathy doesn’t your wireless connection use a router that’s plugged into the wall??
me: Gosh dangit! YES! Crap. I HATE ARCTIC BLAST 2010!!!
So instead I crawled into my bed at 8:30 pm and listened to my kids play. Pat was all, “see maybe this is just what we need to shut us off our computers and…”
And I didn’t hear the rest because I fell asleep. I’m utterly convinced that if we had no technology I would find other ways to tune out my screaming children. Like heroin. Or kick boxing. Or sleeping.
Thank goodness our power turned back on so that I can resume my online responsibilities as planned and not become addicted to heroin.
Til’ next time ARCTIC BLAST…til’ next time.
Booyah's Momma says
Thank goodness for the internet. And for the power coming back on.
It would be a shame if you had to take up kickboxing.
Mama Kat says
I’m really against anything that makes me break a sweat, so yes, kickboxing would be a really bad path for me.
Katie says
Every year my mom and I used to joke that they would run out of new and exciting names for the storms.
We’re lucky and didn’t lose power. On the other hand, we live on a hill that doesn’t get plowed or sanded so most people were stuck on our hill. Or still are.
I hear we’re supposed to get more snow tonight and tomorrow… I can’t help but hope that we will. :)
Mama Kat says
We do too! My mom and my sisters always laugh about the new names. I wonder who gets to come up with them. That would be an awesome job. :)
Hollywood Farm says
After reading your post I became even more homesick from our farm we moved away from this September. I LOVED the first snow. The second, third and 100th I could do without, hence my being the youngest snowbird in the Midwest! All in all I still miss the farm and cozy days in the snow.
Instead I will learn to find the love for 6o degrees all winter. And pretend to commiserate with all of you who’ll be snowed in all winter. Here it comes..
Blast, dang blizzard! (There I feel part of it now!)
Mama Kat says
I was in Hawaii one year for Thanksgiving and it was SO odd…I can’t complain because it IS Hawaii, but I can’t imagine not experiencing the different seasons.
debi9kids says
WAh ha! I thought that might be it! Looks pretty. Annoying. But pretty.
Mama Kat says
I love it! The power outages I can do without, but the weather can stay…for now.
Jen says
Aw, I’m so jealous! I can’t wait to get snow here so I can hit the ski slopes!
Happy Thanksgiving!
Mama Kat says
I’ve never been skiing! Do you have to be fairly coordinated for that?
novelista barista says
aw i want it to snow!!!!!!!!!
Just Me says
The snow I can live with, it is the cold, cold weather that comes with it that I could do without. We have been having -30 C weather here the past few days and I am looking forward to warming up to the freezing mark hahaha.
Stay warm out there :)
Mama Kat says
I don’t do any temperature BELOW is zero. That’s just not normal.
Pam says
We got snow this year in February but that was the first big snow since 1989 when snow covered all the destruction from Hurricane Hugo. I love snow -the way it looks, the cold…but I guess I’d get tired of it quickly if we had it all the time1 Happy Thanksgiving!
Mama Kat says
We don’t always get snow, so it’s definitely exciting. Thank God we don’t have to deal with Hurricanes!!
Kimmy says
LOL…that’s how it is in California. We get some rain and it’s becomes “Storm Watch 2010”. I guess the meteorologist like to make it a comedy for us, or something!
Happy Thanksgiving!
Mama Kat says
I wonder if they laugh at themselves at home…nobody in real life is that animated about the weather.
Cori says
You musta been watching 4,5 or 7 religiously too. Oh who am I kidding, I’ve been hoping they’d stop pre-empting my shows I wanna watch for “extended storm coverage’!! LOL!!
Happy you got power back, we never lost ours, but are also dealing with lots of snow and ice here!!
Mama Kat says
Extended storm coverage! I love it.
lucy says
the media is pretty ridiculous.
Mama Kat says
I want to be a journalist just so I can act like that, “CARS ARE SPINNING. DOWN. THE FREEWAY!! AND THIS IS JESSIEJONES! WITH KING 5 NEWS!”
LilliGirl says
I LOOOOVE this post…pass he heroin! Oh no wait, we didn’t lose our power.
Mama Kat says
Just turn off all the lights…it’s kind of the same.
Grace @ Arms Wide Open says
you must be in the…. oh…. pacific northwest???
Mama Kat says
I don’t confirm my whereabouts. I’m highly private and yes. Yes that’s where I live.
Khara says
Ah yes, delightful, uninterupted sleep, that would be my drug of choice
Mama Kat says
Will we ever get it back?
stef says
So glad I’m not the only one who lets my kids play with matches. The way I see it, yeah, they may burn down the house, but we are just providing warmth for all those without power. I am a giver, I tell ya. And besides, that way you can move in with your mom and she won’t freak about your safety, which is totally unwarranted.
Happy T-day!
Mama Kat says
Houses are replaceable…plus we have insurance so it’s cool.
Chelsea says
Oh, we were supposed to get “The Blizzard of the Century” last night. That definitely didn’t happen. Ah, Utah.
Mama Kat says
Oh you just wait…it’s coming!
kisatrtle says
Just what exactly do you have again heroine?
Mama Kat says
NOTHING!
Jennifer says
I’m so glad we don’t have that kind of weather.
Mama Kat says
But it’s so pretty!

Between the winter storms and tornado season, I’m never without candles, flashlight and batteries, battery operated weather radio, bottled water and plenty of SNACKS! When the kids were little, I bought a couple of brightly- colored plastic beach buckets and filled them with color-books, crayons, small toys, books and their own small flashlights that they could take with them in the hallway or basement when we had to take shelter during tornado warnings. It kept them busy so they wouldn’t be so afraid. I always put little snacks in right before we had to go to the basement so they wouldn’t get hungry.
As for me, I grab whatever sugary snack is close by and turn the T.V. on to watch the play-by-play of the overly-excited weatherman. He seems to live for these moments, and I love watching how worked up he gets over it all. It’s quite entertaining!
jackie says
I don’t know where you live but that sounded like it was a blast :)
Jen says
We lost power once for the whole day and I couldn’t get online and I totally got the shakes. I had to leave the children in the darkness and find some a coffee shop with some wifi.
It was a very close call.
Heather says
I’m beyond jealous of your snow! It’s strange to live in WI and hear about all of this snow other places while we’re just a rainy, muddy mess!
Living here all of my life, I’m used to the hype and laugh about the names they choose.
Erin says
At least the pics are pretty! =)

When I lived in Spokane, this happened every year!! Ice Storm 2007!! Everyone’s gonna die! But now that I’m back in FL, I miss the crazed weather people shouting “ARMAGEDDON!” Well, I hate FL so anything makes me long for the Pacific Northwest :) Even Wind/Ice/Blizzard/Death Storm 2010!!!!
Kim says
Hmmm, I lived in northern Michigan during junior high and high school, went to college in Wisconsin and lived for sometime in Illinois as an adult. Everywhere else I’ve lived has been a joke when it comes to impending snow and it’s so funny to me the way the weather people interrupt programming with constant warnings and people stress so much they cancel school two days ahead of time. I just wish we would get some snow here!
Joy says
BRRRR glad it is you guys up there and not me I am not ready yet! it is cold here today but was so warm and sunny yesterday we played outside. I am gonna go sit by the fireplace!
Laura McCallum says
I live in Glasgow, Scotland and I guess we are having our Arctic Blast 2010 today. Woke up and the place was like a winter wonderland – a complete blank canvas!! I think its fab cos i have nothing to do, nowhere to go, and can just sit and watch it out of my window with my hot cocoa … i really hope the power doesn’t go off though!! But yeah it would seem the media is the same all over as our local media reacts with the same panicstricken newscasts :p
Really enjoyed that post, keep up the good work :)
Laura
Alexandra says
Thank God for the power coming back on! I’ll be happy if it gets cold enough to wear a sweater!
Your Southern Peach says
Very funny post! You make me laugh. Thanks for that.

Since the beginning of time, moms have been finding way to tune out their screaming kids. Quilting bees, canning parties, throw-all-the-kids-outside-and-refuse-to-open-the-door-until-it-is-dark bru-ha-has. Even dogs get enough and get up, shakes the pups off their teet and walk away from the little bastards.
