He’s been waiting for his introduction and now is as good a time as any. Jack is part shih tzu, part maltese. Pat wanted to name him Hapa…which is Hawaiian for half white/half Hawaiian. And since Jack is black and white it only made sense. I told Pat I can’t stand it when people name their animals based solely on the color of their fur. Like Pepper. Or Snowball. Or Smokey.
Granted I had a black lab named Shadow at one point, but whatever…I annoy myself. So what.
After explaining to Pat exactly the kind of names I don’t like, his next suggestion was Oreo.
I rolled my eyes, “His name will be Jack. The end.” And nobody argued so that’s his name.
After saying goodbye to Rudy, Pat made it clear that any dog we got would be on his terms. He had a specific size and color in mind, and really, he just wanted Harry back. I’m still mad at him for letting me let Harry go.
Pat has compared every dog we’ve fostered to him and I believe that Jack, is Pat’s attempt to recreate Harry. And I don’t care…because he’s little and cute and fluffy and I love him and if Pat is happy than that’s all that matters.
Ignore the picture. He’s very happy.
The kids are ecstatic because in the past we have taken care of dogs that are not ours and now they have a dog that is theirs. They love him.
However.
There has to be one right? You can’t just bring a puppy into your house and not have a “however”.
It’s just…I do have a concern:
It took a few retakes to realize that indeed it was not the “shot”, but rather the “dog” that seemed to have neurological optometry problems. I love him in spite of this…but we may plan on keeping his hair a bit longer in the interim.

Cute! Congratulations on the new edition.
Eileen says
He’s very cute! Our shih tzu, Toby, has eyes that roll out a bit (like the opposite of cross-eyed) but he sees just fine! Hope he’s settling in nicely :-)
Kristi {at} Live and Love...Out Loud says
Aww, Jack – I mean, Hapa – is the cutest little cross-eyed dog I’ve ever seen. Who cares if you can’t tell who he’s look at. ;)
Eight is Enough~Jenn~ says
Awwww….What a cute puppy!
Stretching My Imagination says
What a sweetie! I love the story of finding his name. Enjoy the new friend :-)
Jules says
I love him! I must meet him!!
Alicia says
Awwww….he is so cute! Love the name “Jack”!
trash says
Based on those eyes you perhaps should have called him ‘Clarence’?
Los says
Eh – no big deal … it is what makes the dog unique. And if eyes that aren’t aligned is the only problem, then you have nothing to worry about.
Pam says
OMG he’s just the cutest thing! And Tucker (our little yorkie/poo) would LOVE to play with him!
Diane says
He is just precious, lazy eye and all. You could always get him a cool little pair of shades! ;)
Kristen ~DVCMom~ says
He’s adorable! Congrats on the new addition! His eyes give him character, I’m sure the little fuzzie will be just fine.
Jen says
Aw, he is so cute. He must get it from his mommy. ;)
Steph says
He is adorable! I’ve had a maltese for 8 years now and I wouldn’t trade him for anything.
Mz E says
he’Z ADORABLE! I wouldn’t care ONE bit about ANYTHING (that wasn’t a medical condition of course) different on him….it just shows he is “one of a kind” *smile* Congrats on the new addition!
Stay Blessed..
Jennifer says
I think he looks so cute and fluffy and I really want one all for myself. I showed his picture to David and asked if I could have a baby or a puppy, but he knew I was totally bluffing on the baby part so it isn’t going to happen for us. :(
But yay for you!
Jen says
Awwww… Jack is so cute! He kinda reminds me of a black and white version of my dog (who is a Lhasa Apso). Congratulations on the newest family member!
I do kinda like the name Hapa though…
Lindsey says
What an adorable little dog! Is there something that can be done to correct the eyes? Will it harm him in the long run? Or, is it just cosmetic? Regardless, he’s a cutie and a great addition to your beautiful family.
Francesca says
Oh my freaking gawd, I am dying laughing. Literally have tears streaming down my cheeks right now.
Your dog has a lazy eye!!!!! Eff what people are saying about Jack being adorable. Your dog is kinda a freak. Super cute and lovable, yes, but a freak nonetheless.
How did I NOT know this?
I don’t know what’s better: the picture of Pat or the series of Jack.
Does Pat read your blog? HI PAT!! I’ll call you again on your cell phone soon so we can discuss.
Francesca says
PS: Can you do something so that your computer immediately approves only my comments? The lack of immediate satisfaction is hard for me.
Francesca says
PPSS: How can you be sure that chick was talking about her own daughter and not Kainoa in that last post? I’m still not convinced.
Janet says
Kat- on a morning that I have found myself in tears ( the death of a friend, marital issues), I open your page and see your little Jack.
He made me smile- you made me smile, underneath my tears.
thank you for that.
Gwen says
Okay…so I’m lost…what happened to Rudy?
I think Jack is adorable ~ lazy eye and all!!! He’s unique that way!!!
XOXO
Scary Mommy says
You are insane to get a puppy. But, he’s cute! Minus that last shot.
liz says
Poor little guy! I’m glad Jack is in a happy home.
Kathy says
I had a dog named Pepper for 14 years…she looked more like Salt in the end :) But, I’m annoying too lol I think shih tzu’s have those wonky eyes a lot…I’ve seen it in several of them. I think Jack is beautiful & am so happy y’all finally got one to keep!!
Amy says
ShihTzu dogs have eyes like that….google images of them and see for yourself…I guess it’s NORMAL??
Lolli @ Better in Bulk says
Even with the funky eyes, Jack is pretty cute. I do believe that you may have passed my in laws in the most-dogs-in-one-family competition.
Khara says
Aw, HE’S SO FLUFFY!!!
Allison @ Alli 'n Son says
Welcome Jack! His eyes give him character. And entertainment as he accidentally runs into walls.
kimberley - The Go-To Mom says
Jack is so cute I can’t stand it!
Crystal says
SO cute! I want a little puppy SO, SO, badly. But I have a part lab/dalmation mix. Everything about him is big: him, his shedding, how much he eats, and his poop! Maybe I’m just not a dog person.
OHN says
On the up side, he can see in two directions at once. :)
Andrea says
Not that the little guy isn’t totally adorable, because he is, but what happened to Rudy? Glad you are all happy with the little man. Love the name.
dysfunctional mom says
He is CUTE! YAY, you kept one that I actually like! Hee hee
Kim says
We have a Shih Tzu and his eyes do that a lot. Hubs & I call them “Scary Eyes” because he looks scared… and he makes them do it when he’s worried. Otherwise, his eyes are fine.
Such an adorable dog! Makes me want to get another one….
Aleta says
Awww, Jack is just too cute! Greg and I have talked about getting another dog, but right now, I don’t think it would be a good idea. Our cat, Tigger, is getting up their in age and I think it would be bad for him if we brought home a young, energetic puppy.
Sharon says
Jack is simply adorable! Oh my Gosh! I love puppy dogs!!!!!
So he’s gifted. . . At least he can look both ways. . . at the same time. . . before crossing the street!
He’s lovely!
Carol says
That just makes him distinctive, don’t ya think? Years ago, I had a Shih Tzu, but I honestly don’t remember his eyes at all.
kisatrtle says
so he’s got a crazy eye(s) there are worse things right? Jack is very cute!
Rachel {at} Mommy Needs a Vacation says
LOL! You def. DO NOT need the arrows! Ha! He is pretty cute though!
MarytheKay says
Oh, cute little Jack’s got a crazy eye! (Is that politically incorrect? Gosh, ya just never know these days… Perhaps I should have said, “Jack’s got a gravity challenged eye.” Is that better?)
I wish I could smell his wittle puppy breath. Puppies are the best. And he’s a cutie pie!
Texan Mama says
My dog’s name is Brownie.
I don’t know what else to say. Except, she’s not really brown, she’s more like Tan. But I didn’t think I could name her “Tannie”.
This is the stupidest comment ever. I’m sorry I”m wasting the 15 seconds of your life you’ll never get back.
Make that 20. I need to quit typing now….
Bruna says
Jack is adorable. I didn’t really notice his funny eye until you pointed it out. Your kids must be in absolute dog heaven! Love how little and fluffy he is … so darn cute and cuddly looking. Enjoy!
Booyah's Momma says
Initially, I would’ve sided with Pat on this one… but only because I think Hapa babies are the cutest. But Jack fits pretty nicely. Pretty cute new addition.
Sarah Ruth says
OH MY GOSH he is SO adorable!!!!
Shell says
Oh, he’s such a cutie. Despite the eye.
Yellaphant says
OH MY GAH THE GOOGLIES
Mama Kat says
@Yellaphant, It’s hard to look at isn’t it!
Lindsay says
Oh the eyes – It’s totally because he’s a Shih Tzu. I had one and he had dumb eyes like that too. Always made him look a bit dumber than he actually was, which was pretty dumb. But, he was loved dearly and I still miss him but we were just away from home too often (45 minutes each way to work) and he didn’t get the love he deserved, so he was given a new home. :(
I love Jack. Jack is an adorable name for an adorable dog.
Mama Kat says
@Lindsay, Yeah now that I’ve seen more pictures of Shih Tzus I see that it’s kind of a trait of theirs. At least he’s not alone. ;)
Amber says
He’s really cute! I’m not too fond of dogs with color names and obvious names either. Hubby has a dog that he had before we were married and he named her Black Gal. I know, original. My chocolate labs name is Jasper.
Kim says
I could barely stand the cute factor and I think the name Jack really suits him! One of my dogs is a maltese and I definitely see the breed in Jack. Oh, and I think his eye makes him even more adorable. Congratulations!
Noella Q says
Your dog is soooooooo adorable! Lucky u… I saw the name suggestion “Hapa” and had to ask if you are from Hawaii or have ties here? I’m blogging from the aloha state. Thanks for the blogging inspiration!
