Writer’s Workshop: Shut’cher Mouth!

One pet peeve that shouldn’t drive you crazy, but does.

Loud chewing.

It’s a peeve that afflicts my entire family. The only time it’s really not a problem is when we all happen to be eating at the same time because then none of us can actually hear the others chewing.

God forbid one of us happens to be eating cereal near another who is watching TV…the offender would be ridiculed for the rest of the day.

“Wow…how’s your cereal treating you? Is that really good?? Hmmm???? You gettin’ it all???”

And then I grew up and married a man who I believe was raised in a dungeon because not only does he have no problem slurping and slipping his food, but he also has zero awareness of this issue and I have been working REALLY hard to just let him be.

He’s only slightly aware that Loud Chewing irks me. I don’t think he realizes the physical repulsion and rage it causes. I actually don’t want him to know because the few times I’ve drawn attention to his chewing he defiantly gets louder.

I also don’t want to be that wife who can’t allow her husband to simply eat a meal without heckling him. It’s an irrational pet peeve. I know this. I blame my siblings.

I am so with ya, sister. Loud chewing KILLLLLLLLS me. Gum chewing is the worst.

Great prompts this week. :)

Loud, obnoxious eating is why I sit BESIDE The Mister, and not across from him. That way, I don’t have to see the carnage, and only one ear gets assaulted from all that racket.

I do feel sorry for anyone sitting across from us, if that counts for anything.

I’m not so much unnerved by the chewing as the what I see with the open mouth thing. On the other hand, I found the clicking of my grandmother’s dentures while she ate actually soothing :)

I am the same way! I actually got the hubs to stop chewing and slurping. But dinner at his dad’s house with his brother there, it is like a living hell. They slurp soup, noodles and make so much noise!! It’s so repulsive!!

Reply

dysfunctional mom March 2, 2011 at 10:19 pm

It’s not so much the noise but the VISUAL that drives me crazy. Youngest Son constantly chews with his mouth open. I try not to nag but OMG, it’s repulsive.

My husband has this pet peeve. He actually became furious at a meeting, because a co worker was eating celery sticks. The sound of the crunching celery, was enough to set him off. He still talks about that man and his celery sticks, till this day. Personally I don’t mind chewing, it’s the smacking of the lips that bothers me, along with sounds such as “Mmm..*smacking lips* Yum..MMM *SMACK!*”

My husband is a loud chewer too. So irritating. I try to keep my mouth shut about it…I’m sure I have irritating things too :p

Oh man! My husband has the same pet peeve! He hates it! I can’t eat anything “remotely crunchy” or he gives me a sidelong glance, which he TRIES to hide…but alas…I am on to him! :) :) :)

My kids are loud chewers. Drives my husband crazy. I try to ignore it. Thanks for posting directions on how to get the button to work.

People who chew gum loudly really bug me too lol. But chewing food loudly in general bugs me too. My dad used to chew loudly and slirp lol.If we had a meal that had gravy on it….my Gods he’d be loud, slirp really loud and then spil half the gravy down his shirt lol. For the next few hours he’d have gravy round his mouth too.

ElizOF March 3, 2011 at 12:18 am

Thankfully, I no longer chew gum… teeth can’t handle it but I was into it once. Chewing food loudly can be annoying especially when people smack their lips and pick their teeth in between the noise. LOL!
Your post is hysterical. :-)

You have touched a nerve here! I just recently exploded because my husband was eating celery. In the other room. Uggh, it drives me crazy. Celery has been banned from this house ever since.

Leading Man is a noisy eater, too. Mostly because he likes noisy food. Chips. Hard candy. He eats ICE CUBES. In bed. Every night. When we are getting along swimmingly, I ignore it. When I’m already annoyed about something, this is the last straw. I go in the other room!

Would have loved to have written to this prompt but random.org had other ideas and my deceased neighbor deserved a tribute ….. but someday I must a anonymously write about irritating laughs. That’s all.

You did a great job with the prompt!

I don’t think my husband understands that there are rage issues involved in my pet peeves against him, either. Like his loud coughing. LOUD. BARKING. EAR PIERCING. After a day of listening to it, I’m so fragile it’s not even funny. He’s gonna break me one of these days.

Reply

CDG March 3, 2011 at 4:01 am

Okay, so I must live with a pretty civilized man, as I was unaware of this loud chewing thing…

Except now I’m pretty sure I’m going to tune into it.

Drat.

I have the same pet peeve. I swear my husand makes a loud noise when he eats a banana. A BANANA! How is that possible?

Reply

UGH! I’m the same way! That and open mouth chewing!

Reply

I have to be honest, I’m just excited when I see my kids chewing any of their food. They don’t eat anything! I’m too busy being annoyed by them to notice my husband at dinner. ;)

I am definitely an offender! My college roommate used to yell at me all the time for this. Luckily, my hubs is a loud chewer as well so he never says anything.

I am the loud cruncher at my house. Popcorn sounds like gun fire when I chew it.

Reply

Nicole March 3, 2011 at 5:10 am

That is my hugest pet peeve in my home! And there is something about how my husband chews that makes chewing extra gross. Like he’s slurping inside his mouth while he chews.

And don’t even get me started on chewing and talking with a mouthful of food!

my husband is a loud chewer/slurper too. and i have said, “what did that sandwich do to you? you sure are smacking it hard.” his excuse? he has to eat fast because i might eat it all. he doesn’t have time to worry about silly things like being a considerate chewer. men! haha

OMG I hate this too! How awful is this- my sweet 11 year old daughter eats with her mouth closed but for some reason is SO loud that I cannot stand to sit near her while she’s eating. She’s doing everything right, there must just be something about the way her mouth is shaped that creates this mega-sound and it drives me batty. Of course I don’t say a thing to her, but at dinner I sit kitty corner from her. What a bad mom I am.

Reply

Jen March 3, 2011 at 5:39 am

Remind me never to eat in front of you.

Reply

Jenners March 3, 2011 at 5:41 am

Well, I find that occasional vomiting tends to stop the loud chewing as they sit there with their mouths open in disgust. Might want to try it! : )

Reply

Man, that is my pet peeve too. My family is the loudest too which makes dinnertime ARGH!

Reply

Jennifer@ The Mommy Mambo March 3, 2011 at 6:20 am

HAHAHA!! My hubs rivals a horse in an apple orchard when it comes to eating corn chips. He simply must keep his pie hole slightly open when chomping the first bite down on each new chip he shoves in! My SIL is the same way. I have to leave the room not to get ugly > )

Reply

Tiffany1377 March 3, 2011 at 6:22 am

That is one of my huge pet peeves too! I had an ex who used to do this and it was painful for me be around him when he ate. I met up with him not long ago and we had dinner. I had forgotten all about his loud smacking, chewing and slurping. Now I remember…ugh.

LOL That cracks me up! I can’t stand eating with my kids. So every meal but dinner, I eat at my computer. I figure it’s better for all of us. This way I’m too distracted to nitpick their nasty table manners!

Reply

Jennifer March 3, 2011 at 7:25 am

I don’t think that is irrational. It is just good manners to eat quietly. It drives me crazy when my husband or kids chew with their mouths open or slurp their food. David will say, “but it’s hot.” Well I’m not making those noises so figure something out.

Reply

Jessica March 3, 2011 at 7:28 am

My husband is a loud chewer also and I am constantly asking him to chew with his mouth closed! My biggest concern is that he chews like that in public!!! I feel your pain!

Reply

Mama Mary March 3, 2011 at 7:33 am

I think I chomp on gum. Remind me to never chew gum in front of you. My pet peeve is my husband’s biting his nails or cracking his knuckles. Drives me batty! Of and my McLinky pic didn’t work up above but I linked to my post about the movie Man on Wire and how it inspired me. Have you seen it? Amazing!

Reply

Michelle March 3, 2011 at 7:47 am

Loud chewing – only an occasional pet peeve of mine. It all depends on whether or not the offender has ticked me off for some reason. Other than that, I’m not usually bothered by it.

Peace. ;)

Becky @ Accidental Southern Mama March 3, 2011 at 8:09 am

I think ear plugs should be a perfectly acceptable meal accessory, that way we don’t have to listen to slurping food or squabbling children.

Reply

Fenny March 3, 2011 at 8:14 am

Oh, I am so with you on this! When I lived in Ukraine it was sometimes hard to deal with it as slurping and such is not unusual… I have worked hard on acceptance, I’ll tell ya!
I am so so so tickled it all worked out this time: I got your button in my post and got my post linked above!! YEAH!!!

Valerie March 3, 2011 at 8:14 am

Loud chewing – and people who are learning about wine that feels he has to swish/suck/sluuuuuuuuuurp with every damned sip – even at dinner – not sure which is worse. Aren’t there rules about which sounds are appropriate dinner noises?

Cori March 3, 2011 at 8:38 am

so not irrational. my mother would “hmph” and “hmm” herself into a tizzy whenever i would eat chips growing up. and now i have it, too, and it’s worse…pretty much any repetitive noise someone i live with is making can turn me into the wicked witch of the snackfood.

We were at a restaurant and this man at the table next to ours was chewing his food making this awful sound…it iritated us so much we actually asked to be moved.
