(Pssst…writing prompts below).

I’m kind of a Word Snob because try as I may I simply cannot get behind LOL and FTW and muah and woot and much more.

I’ve done my darndest to avoid ever typing LOL because even when I think something is REALLY funny, I’m rarely actually laughing out loud. Especially if I’m sitting and reading and you’re not Chelsea Handler.

In addition to LOL and it’s variations, I also hate FTW.

For the win?

Really?

Are you Paula Abdul?

Are you shooting both hands in the air and shouting “touchdown!”

No. You’re not.

But my least favorite word is Woot.

Watch what happens when Woot is used in real life.

I’m not too keen on “woot” either, and to be honest, when I see “FTW” the first thing I usually think is “fuck the world.” I guess my curmudgeony is showing.

Reply

Mama Kat May 10, 2011 at 6:18 am

That sentence alone speaks volumes about you and just totally cracked me up.

Reply

Nicole Welkener May 10, 2011 at 6:20 am

I DEFINITELY think “fuck the world” as well!

Reply

Mama Kat May 10, 2011 at 6:22 am

Why has this double meaning never occurred to me!?!

Reply

Mandilicious May 10, 2011 at 9:05 am

I think Fuck the world also. I had a friend that kept posting FTW and I couldn’t figure out why she was saying fuck the world after telling us good things that happened in her life every day. I was thinking she was emo or something. The only reason I caught on was because she actually yells “For the win!” in real life as well.

Denelle @CaitsConcepts May 10, 2011 at 9:03 am

But… did you LOL?

Reply

Fenny May 10, 2011 at 9:23 am

Ahum…. then here my confession. I actually thought it was what the fuck backwards… LOL
For the life of me I couldn’t firgure that one out. In my defense: I’m hearing proper or not proper, accented in many varieties, Dutch around here every.single.day.
So. Counts. Right? Tell me that it counts!

Reply

Mary May 10, 2011 at 9:55 am

You mean it really doesn’t mean “F*** the World”? Seriously? I never considered anything else. Who knew? Clearly, not me!

Michele May 10, 2011 at 4:37 pm

Wow! I have always thought it meant f&$@ the world! Learn somethin’ new every day!

I’ve never used the word. Nope. Not on my blog. Not in real life.

But I have seen it once or twice out there in blog land.

Reply

Mama Kat May 10, 2011 at 6:21 am

This makes me happy Matty. You just keep being you and don’t let those wooters influence you.

I, too, have never used LOL. And what’s funny is, some of my older relatives use it in e-mails, and I’m sure they think it means “lots of love”. And I can deal with that…. but I’ve still never used it!

Reply

Mama Kat May 10, 2011 at 6:22 am

Bless their hearts. I like that better.

Reply

Diane May 10, 2011 at 10:26 am

My mother-in-law thinks it means “lots of love” too and even after my husband told her the meaning after seeing her use it inappropriately on facebook, she still does it!

She’ll say something like,

“So sorry to hear about the death of your grandmother…lol”

Reply

Denelle @CaitsConcepts May 10, 2011 at 11:23 am

Ok, Diane, that’s hysterical.. I mean, not really in the context you then used it in, but yes, really… simply because of that context.

Who knew technology could create so many new ways to commit a social faux pas?

Reply

Texan Mama May 15, 2011 at 12:56 am

Okay, now, I actually DID laugh out loud when I read that.

So can I put LOL?

Reply

June Freaking Cleaver May 10, 2011 at 3:19 am

I admit I use LOL. I have never used WOOT or ROFLMAO (until now)
I hate the following:
:) (or any other facial expression) – I do not look like that when I smile.
24/7 – why not say ALL THE TIME?
Texting abbreviations hurt my soul. The way it has invaded written language wounds me deeply.
ur – is typing the “yo” as the first two letters THAT difficult? If so, get some speech recognition software immediately.
The Boy is enamored with LOL Cats…just shoot me. ‘I can has cheezburger?’ – makes my teeth hurt. He talks like that damned Happy Cat all the time…it drives me nuts.

Let’s take back the English language before the little children think that crap is normal.

Thank you for providing your forum.

Reply

Mama Kat May 10, 2011 at 6:26 am

I’ll admit I am an emoticon over-user. I find I fall back on :) when I’m being particularly sarcastic and I’m afraid the reader won’t pick up on it. I’m totally over the top though. I admit to this. I just can’t stop.

I Can Has Cheezburger hurts my heart to read. Perhaps that’s why I don’t visit the site. The title alone is painful.

I’ve sometimes used “woot” but only facetiously.

I haven’t watched the video because I’m at work, but are you driving while recording this? Be careful!

Reply

Mama Kat May 10, 2011 at 6:27 am

I am. It’s the only time I find solace. But most of it was filmed in my driveway.

Reply

Vinobaby May 10, 2011 at 4:38 am

I have never been a “woot” girl. Ever. But they are out there. They often travel in hoards. I’ve seen them. I’ve heard them. I usually get a little nauseous.

No clue what FTW means. I am guilty of a few LOLs though.

Fab video–made me LOL but not quite ROFLMAO.

Cheers.

Reply

Mama Kat May 10, 2011 at 6:28 am

I recently used LOL when I tweeted from the SITS Girls account and I have to say…it kind of felt good! It cut the tweet down to 140 characters, it was fast and easy…but I’ve been fighting it too long to give in now. I can’t become a regular user now. I just can’t.

Reply

Denelle @CaitsConcepts May 10, 2011 at 11:19 am

Oh, but you will. *cackle*

However, you know it’s gone entirely too far when you do what my sisters do and actually spell out what it would sound like pronounced.

For example.. When a person types LOL, it means that they laughed out loud. When someone else describes it, it may be that the person LOL’d. For my sisters, it is a first person, self-descriptive role-playing sort of thing that has turned into them typing “lawlz.” They also say it. Out loud. In public.

Don’t get me started on “rawfulmayo.”

Reply

Erin @ I Should be Studying May 10, 2011 at 4:50 am

No see the “woot” DID work the fIRST time, the problem was that you repeated it. lol.

Reply

I’m laughing…it WAS the repetition that killed it, wasn’t it!?! I’ll work on that!

The woot will stop here too . Not that I ever used it . . . I will just join the STW (Stop the Woot) movement.

Also, the LOL and other abbreviations? In my family, they have been horribly misused. HORRIBLY! I posted about it here . . . http://astonesthrowfrominsanity.blogspot.com/2010/09/back-to-blogging-mom-is-down-with-opp.html

I’m would not say I’m a wooT girl, but I do use the occasional “wooooo”. Yes, I really do. I’m not sure what I would exchange it with.

Reply

Mama Kat May 10, 2011 at 6:30 am

Honestly I think wooo is okay. And so does Vicki from the Real Housewives of Orange County. So I think we’re good with that.

Reply

Mandilicious May 10, 2011 at 9:06 am

There is an entire How I Met Your Mother episode about Wooo girls, they are in a class all their own. Totally different from woot.

Loved this post and video, you inspire me to vlog:)

Reply

Mama Kat May 10, 2011 at 6:33 am

I’m glad you’ve come forward Cari. It’s only through admitting you have a problem that you’ll ever be able to do anything to help yourself. The first thing I’d like you to do is start leaving off the ‘t’ in your woot.

And actually that’s the only thing I’m looking for here.

Reply

Stephanie May 10, 2011 at 6:14 am

Love the video! I agree, woot is obnoxious. I thought FTW meant something else entirely. I guess that means I have a potty mouth even when I’m reading.

You give good vlog by the way (and note I did not use btw).

I too hate woot, LOL (and all derivatives) and all other short-hand slang. It may have been helpful back when texting was new and no one had a full keypad. If you don’t have a full keypad, please just don’t text. You are either too old to text anyway or you are just embarrassing yourself with your tap, tap, tap (for just one letter).

Down with WOOT!

have a great day! :-)

Reply

Mama Kat May 10, 2011 at 6:47 am

Oh dear Lord Sherri…I do believe you just came up with round two of the Down with Internet Slang Movement.

I’ve actually had email discussions with friends about the word Squee. It has got to go!

Reply

Shea May 10, 2011 at 6:47 am

Ok, I am an admitted woo/woot/woop girl. I say them in real life as well as yay excessively. I only use FTW when I’m expressing how awesome something is with limited space. One thing that gets me is instead of hahaha, people put Bahahahaha. Really? Do you physically make the “b” sound when you laugh? We should do what Demetri Martin says in his comedy bit and instead of LOL, write LSTM (Laugh silently to myself).

Reply

I happen to really like these people, so I will continue to talk to them. However, I don’t know that I would use the word myself. When I picture people saying it, I picture the emphasis being a little different than in your video. Kind of like if someone were to say, “Say what?”

So…anyway…yeah, I agree with you, I hate “woot”. Especially when it’s overused and then coupled with “raise the roof”…oh no, please.just.stop.

The irony in all of this is that I just used “woot” for the very first time on Twitter this weekend. Not sure why, it just happened and now I’m terribly ashamed. Although I’m fairly certain I was using it to make fun of myself, but still. I’m going to go flog myself with a dictionary now…

a) you’re gorgeous
b) you’re a vlog inspiration
c) I think the hard part is the T on the end. Though I’ve never used it in real life, hearing the “wooT” really pushed me over the edge of “someone make this stop.”

If I’m using short hand in a text, I tend to go with SOL (snort out loud) because that’s really what I’m doing. I’m actually doing a snort/guffaw thing when I read a funny. But, since I do text with a full keypad, perchance I shall work on entering all of those damn letters.

I learned something new today – I honestly had no idea what FTW meant. As for LOL, guilty. I use it liberally and often. Even if I’m not laughing out loud, it’s still the most accurate way I can think of to describe something that I think is really funny. Other than to say, “That is really funny.” Which doesn’t really ring too genuine, you know?

As for woot and holla and words of that variety, I’ve come to terms with the fact that I just can’t pull them off.

Reply

Plus: 140 characters are still not a lot at times. So I do use 2 instead of to, two, too when I need a couple of characters off. What about that?

FTW = For The Win? Huh. I had no idea.
Now LOL I do use when I literally Laugh Out Loud. Which I do, a lot. I’m an easy laugher. Not proud of it, but it’s true.
Another word I use… snort. I “snort” when I laugh. Again, it’s true. Again, not proud.
I do not ever roll on the floor laughing though. Nor have I ever laughed my ass off. Though that would be handy from time to time.

and honestly – until today I didn’t even know what FTW meant… I usually just avoid ANYthing that starts with F… just in case :)

and “woot”… to me it’s a sarcastic “woot woo”… and that I usually avoid typing (although I actually DO say it) just because I try desperately to HIDE my sarcastic self behind my outwardly smiley personality…

oops, guess that hasn’t worked out too well for me, might as well say “woot woo” a little more often :)

And seriously, your video shows EXACTLY why. It really does sound dumb. I actually shed a tear laughing about it when you were rocking out in the car. Oh God. Ok, well…you just killed one woot-er. :-)

You seriously crack me up!
I am NOT, however, rolling on the floor laughing, or (quite unfortunately) laughing my a** off!
Don’t understand “woot”- never have; thought it must be a regional thing from somewhere other than the southeast U.S.
I do use LOL, although most recently on my 7 year old daughter’s iCarly birthday invites. That’s okay, right?
So- count me in! Down With Woot!
Can we make that DWW from now on?
Just kidding :-)

This is hilarious.
It’s also about time someone said something about this ridiculous word.
I honestly didn’t know what it meant when people were posting it on FB and blogs.
I’m also not a fan of FML (f*ck my life).
Really? ef you life?

However, I lol all over the place.

i’ve never heard wtf b/f but use lol (b/c i DO) all the time. I’m a nurse. if it weren’t for all our abbreviations, i’d neverget any charting completed!
i don’t think i ever heard woot until last year but it doesn’t really match “me”.
my problem: i don’t know how to do twitter w/o using LOTS of abbreviations! as it is, when i have something to say, i rarely can get it in. i hate all the goofy misspellings of words that have evolved from texting, etc. but after 60+ years of adjusting to all kinds of things, I decided to adjust to this too. of all the things i’ve had to get used to, it is fairly minor really:)

I admit I was powerless over Woot—that my life had become unmanageable.

Phew, step 1 out of the way…

I promise to do my best not to use WOOT…..That said if it’s a Girls Night Out and I am drinking way to many shots of whatever people are buying then an occasionally WOOOHOOO may come out as I’m trolling the dance floor like I have no business doing.

I shall hang my head in shame later but I can’t control it when it occurs. I shall try harder……

I’ve never even seen FTW, but I do live in the Midwest. Either I am just too old for anyone I know to use it…or the Midwest just isn’t cool enough for it yet.

I’m so very confused. I thought w00t was pronounced WooHoooo! and have been erroneously using it for years.

But also? I’m terribly old and unhip and usually slightly confused. Last week at Whole Foods when the bagger told me my shirt was tight I thought he was telling me (and the other male bagger) that I needed to perhaps have bought it a size larger.

Holy Wootenanie, I called for an anti-woot campaign on Twitter a few weeks ago and the Woot Defamation League kicked my butt. I am so with you on the awkward Woot! word usage. It’s unnatural. Thank you for calling attention to this important cause.

Woot is only cool if you are a college boy in your twenties. But it is not an excitable explanation. It is very low key. And it is not the flavor of the week. But the S* word apparently still works in most social situations and pretty much can mean the same thing give the right amount of gusto.

And to show my age and the age of my kid.
Fonzie would have never said Woot. ROFLMAO

I type, hahahahahahahahahhahahhaha!!!! when something is really funny to me and I”m laughing out loud. It just seems more real to me somehow. I always feel like when someone writes LOL its their polite way of saying “oh that was funny.” Sometimes when my friend and I are laughing about something while instant messaging, and we both keep typing hahahahhaha!!!! back and forth it actually makes me laugh harder :)

My husband is a rhet/comp English professor. He says I should stop with the WOOTS, LOL’s, 24/7′s, WTF’s, OMG’s and my readership will greatly improve.

Damn, I’m starting to think he’s right! “LOL”!

Oh man . . . now I feel so old . . . all you young ones don’t know that FTW is a Hollywood Squares reference. As in, “I’ll take Joan Rivers in the center square for the win, John.”

This vlog made my day. I’m a junior/senior high English teacher, and the text speak that appears in the papers I grade brings tears to my eyes.

Your post is a public service message as far as I’m concerned. Thanks, Kat.

Can I say “Woo?” Have you seen that episode of How I Met Your Mother about the woo girls? B/c I turn into one of those every once in a while.

But, I don’t woot.

My 2 yr old and I both chuckled out loud. I think you just made Woot cool to say everywhere. Maybe not, but it was fun to watch!

Thinking I really want to jump on this vlog bandwagon. I have one under my belt I did for a review and was totally nervous. Silly I know. Thanks for the laughs .)

Yep we definitely need to have a “WOOT” burning or something. Or secretly hypnotze bloggers through subliminal messages in a vlog, and erase it from their memories. You may have to do that for it to be effective though. You’ve got a much larger following than I!

I’m LMAO! No? Heh.

I only started using LOL recently, because I was always writing “hehe” or “haha”, and I thought they were getting old. So I sometimes go with LOL. It always feels awkward, because I don’t LOL easily in real life, but I thought it sounded cool. Not cool? Ok, I’m dropping it.

Never used Woot, I’m proud to say! :)

I am not a “wooter” and always picture it used with a fist in the air sort of doing that spinning arm/punching the air move that is sort of MC Hammer-ish which means it never should have and never should be used. Ever.

First of all, agree 100% on how annoying the “woot” is and I do confess that I’m guilty of the “LOL”. My texts are usually super long because I write out EVERY word. I think the English language is suffering a slow death.

Secondly, I usually read your blog at work which means that I can’t look at the videos, but yesterday I remembered to look at it when I got home…I’ve been definitely missing out. You’re gorgeous, have the most soothing voice, you’re hilarious, and speak perfect English. I’m also jealous of your perfect skin.
I promise to chang my LOL ways and to NEVER say woot :)

What the heck does “Woot” mean anyways! HA! I use “LOL”, but that’s usually because I actually DO Laugh Out Loud! I love to laugh. My dad sent me a text once that said “LOL” and I asked him if he knew what it meant. He jokingly replied “Little Old Lady?” I definitely “LOL”‘d at that! That’s pretty much the only “text” language I use. I can’t stand it when people don’t spell the words out. Don’t be so lazy people!

Ok, ok so I agree on the LOL and most definitely on ROFLMAO. Your right.. no one is rolling on the floor. The thing is I came up with this one PIMP (peeing in my pants) because I really do (sorry kids did it too me). If I so much as laugh too hard, sneeze, jump… yes it’s embarrassing to admit…but I really do PIMP.
Also saw the funniest FB post…my friend said that if she could really LMAO she would be eating more chocolate cake!
And the only HOOT I like to hear is the owl in our backyard.

Muffy May 13, 2011 at 5:24 pm

I’m sorry. I accidentally really did lol while watching the video…
Actually, I LOLWHMC (whilst holding my crotch) because I almost peed a little.
And hey, maybe you should try Wooting like my little brother does?? It’s a double woot with sort of a howling finish. Sort of a low woot, then a screaching woot into a howl. He does it all the time. ;)
Ut oh. Emoticon. I’m gonna get shunned before I even get started!
New follower! LOVE your blog, your prompts; excited!

Unfortunately the end result of me watching that video while my kids were playing nearby was two little girls running around yelling “Woot!”. Apparently you made it sound really fun.

Don’t be hatin’ on the woot. I love woot. I say woot. As a matter of fact when you did your video, I didn’t think anything of the woot. I liked it.

Now you probably think I”m just a big turd or something. FTL.

I love this! I have issues with LOL too. I know people are not really LOL’ing. So, really they’re lying. And, people put LOL when they think it will ease the pain of a rude comment, like “That shirt makes you look like a cow, LOL.” I’m more of a HA! girl.

Jenny May 22, 2011 at 4:30 pm

You crack me up. The video was hysterical. I don’t think woot is popular in Florida, but dude is and it works my nerves when it is used in every sentence ;)

I am guilty of using LOL, but after this post I think I will rethink using it ever again.

I use woot (sorry:) but I am a nerd & tend to talk to other geeks a lot, the word being co-opted by non tech people does diminise it’s usefulness.

Besides, what about that fun shopping site woot?

I found you on youtube, love you, consider me a new fan!
