Writer’s Workshop Prompt: Ode to your mother…write about a special mom memory you have in honor of Mother’s Day.

We were confused when she pulled our big brown van up to the drop off bin at the post office. We’re supposed to be going to Burger King.

“Mom? Where are we going??”

“We’re hungry Mom…pleeease can we just get dinner??”

We were even more confused when she started talking to the mailbox.

“Hello!! Yes, we’ll take four cheeseburgers, three hamburgers no cheese, three large fries…”

We were silent for a moment…why was Mom ordering our dinner from a mailbox?

“MOM! PLEASE! We’re hungry…this isn’t funny, we want to eat…can we go please??”

But she continued.

“Sorry make that four large fries, can we get two large drinks and…”

And then we got scared. Not because our mother seemed to be carrying on with a mailbox that wasn’t responding…but because she was getting our order all WRONG! I know it seems unlikely…but what IF someone was really taking our dinner order from the mailbox!

“MOM! I want chicken nuggets not a cheeseburger!! Did you order chicken nuggets??”

And she continued.

“I’m sorry can you make one of those cheeseburgers a six piece nugget instead?”

And then everyone started piping in,

“Can we get milkshakes? I want a chocolate one? And make sure my burger has cheese but NO ketchup…”

She ordered our entire meal. Milkshakes and all. And then started cracking up. Convincing us kids that she was ordering a Burger King meal from a mailbox at the post office was quite possibly the single most gratifying thing she’s done in her life. Especially because we were old enough to know better and fell for it anyways.

I’m concerned that it wasn’t so much a joke as it was a premonition of what she’s going to spend her days doing once she’s a senior citizen.

She Has A Way Of Making Me Believe Her

Your mom sounds playful and fun. I love that in a mom. And how great that everyone went along with it. Too bad that damn mailbox couldn’t deliver.

Happy Mother’s Day to you!

Why can’t the post office deliver it? Neither rain, nor snow, nor addled mother…

Very funny mom you have there!

Oh my word – that is seriously hilarious. My mom used to work in dispatch for a trucking company – so she was on the CB Radio all day. So, whenever she would order fast food for us, her last words to the intercom were always “10-4 good buddy”. It was very embarrassing.

I think I’ll try this on the way home from school today. Maybe even slip a bit of play money into the slot. I’m a bit worried Twin B will grab my phone and dial 911?…He’s done it before, after all. ;)

Angel May 5, 2011 at 4:12 am

BWhahaha that is something I could see my husband doing to our boys. Right before they sign the papers to have daddy get the special check..

At first, I was worried this story was going to end in your poor mom having some sort of mental breakdown. It’s a much better story when it ends in teasing kids. lol :)

I really thought you were going to say your mom was crazy, because that sounds like something I would do right about my breaking point with my kids!

What fun your mom must be! If you can teach your kids a sense of humor, than I think you’ve done something right! Well done Mama Kat’s Mama!

Good luck in those senior citizen years!

I love this story. It reminds me of my uncle whose favorite game when were kids was to special order a million things in the drive thru (back when you didn’t get things your way) and then try to pay with a $100 bill. He used to entertain us for hours that way.

But anyways – glad I finally got to link up! Love your prompts! Happy Well, I guess it is Friday now! :)
