Determined to fight for what you believed in.
Countries at war, you went to battle.
Leaving a wife and family and friends behind,
You left us with a brave heart.
I didn’t know why you went.
Too young to feel the weight of your choice.
But I knew I’d be too weak to do the same,
And that you left us with a brave heart
Your wife and kids stayed waiting,
Your Mom and Dad kept praying.
Sleepless nights spent missing you,
When you left us with a brave heart.
Your sisters and brothers wanted you home,
But have saluted your courage each day.
Filled with admiration for their brother,
When you left us with a brave heart.
You died too far from home, Ben.
A long life ahead cut short.
I know your little girls will grow up knowing,
You left us with a brave heart
Tonight the target for Terror was taken down.
Bittersweet feelings, I thought of you.
We won the cause you gave your life fighting,
When you left us with a brave heart
People are celebrating in the streets.
Our world is better for people like you.
You should be here to feel your victory,
But you left us with a brave heart.
I want to thank your for your courage.
I want to hug you for your sacrifice.
I want to salute you for keeping our country safe,
And leaving us with brave hearts.

Oh, Mama, tears. This is absolutely breathtaking in it’s beauty. Your link to the original post made those tears spill over. How I wish that the sacrifice made by Bens all over the world was never needed in the first place.
Emily says
I hope his family is feeling a bit of closure tonight. I hate that any life was lost in this fight. Killing Osama won’t bring them back, but at least he can’t hurt another family.
Kate says
Beautiful post!
I hope Ben’s family & all the families with Bens are at some peace today. And like the Drama Mama said above, I wish there had never been a need for a death like Ben’s in the first place.

So sorry for all that lost him. But really I think he is “here” for so much more than it may feel like. Including this victory.

Today is such a bittersweet day. The stories of the people who gave their life to protect me are kinda pulling at my heartstrings. I think I’ve used a whole box of tissues already.
Thanks to Ben and his family!

I’m sorry that you lost a friend and that his family lost him. I’ve always been a comic geek and when I was a kid, my brother and I would read these World War II comics drawn by a WWII vet. He always ended the tale with the same message: war no more. Maybe one day that will be possible.

Well written. So touching. I’m so sorry for your loss.
Today I’m thinking about a student I taught in 2005 (she was in 5th grade) – her mother was killed in the Pentagon. I wonder what her thoughts are on this. It’s probably bitter sweet. Maybe some closure. It’s hard to know exactly how to feel.
