In yesterdays post about women struggling to find balance I cited Carol Brady as a mom who we never really saw playing with her kids. After some thought I realized that not only did Carol not play with her kids, but to my recollection she didn’t actually…do…anything.
Six kids are a handful for sure…but they were all in school AND she had a live in maid/cook. Furthermore, Alice solved a lot of the kids problems for them as well.
Much like the strange disappearance of Punky’s mother, this issue of Carol’s questionable presence in the Brady household has now fully occupied space in my brain. Where WAS she everyday?
I took my question to Twitter…surely SOMEONE knows what Carol was up to! Right?
This is the response I got:
To tell you the truth I really don’t know WHAT Carol was up to in that household, but after reading the suggestions on Twitter I was sure glad I asked! Scott summed up the Carol Brady debacle well for all of us I think:
Well done Twitter.
And God bless Carol Brady.

I’m pretty sure she was online, blogging or something…

I ditto the ‘drank wine’ theory. You have to have SOMETHING to fill the time!

Actually she was a real estate agent and that is how she met Mike to begin with . He was an architect and was hired to build some houses on property her company owned.. and how scary is it that I not only KNOW that but remember it as well..
Shelly says
I like the drank wine theory too – although maybe it was Bon Bons and wine!

Doesn’t matter what she was doing… I WANT A live in cook and maid!!!
Courtney @ The Mommy Mattesr says
You know, I never really thought about that before, but now I am. Great question. Glad Twitter was able to come up with some answers. You know, Twitter is smarter than Google these days. :)
Christi says
Yeah, I’m also thinking she must have had a blog. :-)

Hey I know a real life lady who stays home but sends her kids to daycare every day. Not sure if she has a maid but really? I can’t imagine not taking care of my kids if I’m not working (unless they’re in school). I’d honestly love to be a stay at home wife.
Amy says
I know it’s not real, but shouldn’t we point out how much work is involved with keeping a home and raising a family? Just doing laundry for that family would be a full time job, not to mention all the meal planning. We should all have that much help, then maybe we’d be sweeter to our spouses:)

And our children!

I don’t remember much of that show, but I do think she was a working mom, and they just didn’t bring it up much on the show because they were afraid of irritating the viewers, or seem like they were taking some sort of stance.
Vinobaby says
Six kids and mixed family. I think she was a stop-monster behind closed doors. And perhaps she was who the Rolling Stones were channeling when they wrote “Mother’s Little Helpers.” The only way anyone can smile so much is if they are high on happy pills.
Wine too.
Cheers.

Who the hell cares what she was doing. I think the real question is how do one go about getting an Alice?
Suniverse says
I’m all about everyone having an Alice. But more than 2 bedrooms for the kids. Seriously? What are they? The Waltons?
Trish says
I saw her standing in the kitchen a couple times handing things to Alice. And once she went to the grocery store. Where she and the family were “discovered” for a washing machine detergent commercial.
Jules says
She drank coffee a lot with Alice.
And sometimes she crosstiched while watching Mike work.
She also put away laundry.
And that’s about it.
trash says
Mike Brady was GAY!?!?!

This post? This post was the perfect way to start my evening! Am now off to find you on Twitter!

Great…thanks! Now that mystery is now taking up space in my brain! I must investigate the 8th Wonder of the World – Carol Brady’s occupation.
OneMommy says
Funny how those moms we remember as being so great on those early sitcoms really weren’t that great as mothers… Maybe I should lower my expectations for myself, hire a maid, and lounge around all day… Nah… Can’t do it.
Sharon says
Let’s see, she had six kids, three of whom were her step children. Marsha always had the “what about me’s”. Cindi always needed her hair done. Her husband was actually gay. I bet she spent all that time in therapy. I hope it helped. LOL

I had a post similar to Mike’s answer just a few weeks ago entitled why I’m not a doctor yet. We need to figure out a way to purge all this random crap from our minds. LOL great post. I guess she was sleeping with the milkman
Resa says
Thank you. THANK YOU for this nice chuckle!! i just watched an episode over the weekend. on that particular one, she was sending the children out to have petitions signed to save the community park, but she never joined them.
Sandra says
Wait…what? Where supposed to play with our kids?
A Mommy in the City says
Sometimes I wish I had it as easy as Carol did!
Jenn @ Coolest Family on the Block says
Carol Brady is my hero.
I’ve always wanted a housekeeper and a gay husband, but alas my husband is very much straight (although he does have a strange obsession with wanting every window to be dressed with curtains) and I certainly have no housekeeper. Maybe I can compromise and get a gay housekeeper…my husband would be thrilled to no end with all of the window treatments.

L.O.L. I feel I have crossed some awesome blogoworld milestone when I am mentioned by you on your very own post.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I don’t have a housekeeper and I DO have a job so hi ho hi ho back to work I go. :-)

I don’t know what Carol did with her time, but I sure enjoyed reading all of your guesses! Made my morning. :D

Carol was so lucky to have a housekeeper and a gay husband and a cute wardrobe. I am so jealous.

I love the funny answers – creative and a hoot! The one thing Carol always did – she was there for her kids when they needed her and taught them valuable lessons…even if it meant taking their lumps…
I’m a Carol Brady fan (and I wish I had a maid, too!)
Georgia Girls says
LOL answers! I watched the Brady Bunch every day after school. But of course I was more focused on the kids and the “Marsha, Marsha, Marsha” jealously from Jan. I always wondered why Marsha never would get her hair trimmed — always scraggled to a V in the back.
Frelle says
I love the responses that Twitter generated when you put this out there. I watched some of the conversation, glad you recounted here!!
Mrs4444 says
This is brilliant. Loved it. Good ole Carol….
Michelle says
LOve some of these comments.
I have a maid, cook and laundress…rolled into one, of course. I’m not maid (hehe) of money, you know.
BUT, I can tell you, with six kids, she was REFEREEING.
And smoking pot.
