Maile’s been mumbling about Laina’s T Ball for weeks now. We watch her games on Wednesday evenings and as soon as her sister goes up to bat Maile starts in…
“she can’t even hit it hard…”
I pull her aside every time and scold her for being negative about something her sister is showing interest in.
“she’s playing with a bunch of boys…”
Laina looks up to Maile and the last thing we need is Laina to feel bad about trying a sport she thinks looks like fun.
“she’s not catching the ball…”
And I venture to guess Maile’s feeling a tiny bit jealous that Laina is brave enough to step out of her comfort zone and try something new when Maile is not.
“can we go home now?”
I took the girls to dinner the other night and Laina confessed something was bothering her,
“a boy on da other team told me I’m a bad hitter”
As I fumbled for the right response Maile piped right in,
“He said WHAT!?! Oh Laina I think you’re a great hitter! That wasn’t nice at all!!”
Funny how our family reserves the right to put each other down, but as soon as someone else steps up to do the same we instantly go up to bat for them.
