Maile’s been mumbling about Laina’s T Ball for weeks now. We watch her games on Wednesday evenings and as soon as her sister goes up to bat Maile starts in…
“she can’t even hit it hard…”
I pull her aside every time and scold her for being negative about something her sister is showing interest in.
“she’s playing with a bunch of boys…”
Laina looks up to Maile and the last thing we need is Laina to feel bad about trying a sport she thinks looks like fun.
“she’s not catching the ball…”
And I venture to guess Maile’s feeling a tiny bit jealous that Laina is brave enough to step out of her comfort zone and try something new when Maile is not.
“can we go home now?”
I took the girls to dinner the other night and Laina confessed something was bothering her,
“a boy on da other team told me I’m a bad hitter”
As I fumbled for the right response Maile piped right in,
“He said WHAT!?! Oh Laina I think you’re a great hitter! That wasn’t nice at all!!”
Funny how our family reserves the right to put each other down, but as soon as someone else steps up to do the same we instantly go up to bat for them.

I love this so much.

Too funny. That’s how my family is too. We can talk bad, ahem…, I mean, “lovingly criticize” each other, but if someone else says something, it’s on!! And, I love the video!!
Gigi says
That is awesome that she is stepping out of comfort zone. And yeah, that whole, “I can say what I want about my sister but YOU can’t” thing is pretty much par for the course in every family.

That’s cute how Maile encouraged her. T-ball is hilarious! Funny how you have to yell at her to run when she hits it.

Its good to know that when it counts, siblings will always stand up for each other.

Awww, the dynamics of sisters! She hit it so well! (tell her coach to put the tee up, she’s a tall girl!)
Jennifer says
That’s what big sisters are for. My brother recounted the story to my daughter of the time I beat a kid up on the bus that was messing with him. She was all, “mom, did you really do that.” And I said, “no one can mess with the people I love.”
Jennifer says
She did great! And I love that the coach gave her five when she got on base!

What a cutie pie! I love the video! I grew up in a large household – 7 kids. We picked on each other all the time, but ganged up when anyone else tried to…
…maybe it’s the pack mentality.
Mel says
Awesome sisters! Hey, as a newish reader, can I get tutorial on how to pronounce the kids’ names? I always stumble over them mentally and want to read them right!
Raquel English says
I’m also a newbie to your blog. I don’t know how to correctly pronounce the names either. A tutorial would be great, and I know you would make it a clever and funny one.
Mama Kat says
Yes my friends of course!
Maile is pronounced My-Lee (like Miley Cyrus)
Laina is (Lay-nuh)
Kainoa is (Ky-no-uh)
They’re all Hawaiian and I wrote about them here: https://mamakatslosinit.com/mama-kat/my-family/ :)

Both of my girls played ball, starting with T-ball. I miss those times – playing catch in the yard, getting beaned by hit balls, and having permanent bleacher dents on my butt.
Okay, maybe I don’t miss the last part.
My girls had fun, made friends (even with some of the boys), and gained confidence while playing ball – and continued playing until they were 15 or so.
Jordan says
yep, that sounds like every family to me. and siblings. :)
Lindsay says
My girls are the same way. They’re SO mean to each other, but the second I threaten to sell them to the circus they’re all, “NO, YOU CAN’T SELL MY SISSY!!!”
Kim says
Loyalty! I love this :) My girls are so protective over one another in public; you’d never know they wrestle and pull each other’s hair at home!
