This one time I was all, “I’m tired of spending money…I know something inexpensive and fun we can do! Let’s go to the pumpkin patch!”
And the kids were all “YAY!”
And my husband was all “Here we go again…”
And then we got to the Pumpkin Patch and the kids were all, “Oooh can we do that pumpkin slingshot for a dollar?” and I was all “SURE!!” and they were all “Ooh can we do that creepy corn maze for 6 dollars??” and I was all “SURE!!” and the kids were all “Oooh can we have kettle corn for lunch??” and I was all “SURE!!” and the kids were all “Oooh can we have the biggest pumpkin in the PATCH!?!” and I was all “HECK YEAH!!”
Fifty Bucks and two hours later I was coming down from my Kettle Corn high and I was all, “boy…I’m tired of spending money. Hey I know something inexpensive and fun we can do! Let’s go to the Farmer’s Market!!”
And the kids were all “YAY!!”
And my husband was all “Here we go again…”

It costs $60 for all of us to just walk through the doors of our pumpkin patch. Instead, we will stay home and watch TV!

I totally cheated this year and got our pumpkins at the grocery store.
Melanie says
Isn’t that just how it always is? Which is why hubby and I go to the pumpkin patch with little money in our pockets, enough to just buy the pumpkins. Sorry kiddos, no tractor rides today.
Love, love, love the picture of the Starbucks coffee cup next to the pumpkins. You know, coffee just goes with everything, doesn’t it?

This is when you realize that nothing is free. Even free has its price. But, oh well. You tried. You had fun. You had quality family time and that’s priceless!
Andrea says
And to think a walk down a dirt road and through a muddy field used to be free… But now it costs five bucks to feed the goats! :)
jo@blog-diggidy says
lol, so much for not spending any money…nothing is free anymore, it kinda sucks! i remember back in the day when there was a free fair in the area and we used to go for my birthday every year, it was awesome, we went til i was well into my twenties!! :)
Hannah says
Our trip to the pumpkin patch ended up costing around the same amount LOL. So much for cheap fun these days :)

Bwah ha ha ha hhhaaaa *wiping tears from my eyes*
I’m sorry, I started laughing at “I know something inexpensive we can do…let’s go to the pumpkin patch”.
I’ve escaped that money pit by moving to the UK, where Halloween is a weirdly different holiday. (The first Halloween here, my son wore his fireman costume and everyone looked at him like a freak…it’s ghosts and ghouls and scary stuff ONLY. I haven’t had a trick or treater yet, the locals hate the idea. I think they trick or treat somewhere in town, but I haven’t found it yet.)
The farmers markets, on the other hand….

Here in Ireland pumpkins have only been available for about last 10 years, and then only in supermarkets. No pumpkin patches here.
Before the arrival of pumpkins we used to hollow put large turnips – which are like carving out a brick only more difficult!
Couldn’t believe how EASY it was to carve a pumpkin instead!!!

I loved your reply. I learned something new today. Thanks!

Ha! That’s exactly how it is. You think it’s going to be cheap and easy, and the next thing you know, you’re buying tickets for the bouncy house, cotton candy (that was for me) and a 50lb pumpkin.
Just Jennifer says
That’s so funny…and true! Why must everything cost so much? Since we added my son to our family 5 years ago I’m still surprised at how much it costs for a family of 4 to just eat at Burger King. Remind me again why I have to feed my children?
Nicole says
We are going tonight! I have never been to a legit pumpkin patch. Sad I know.
Stephanie says
HA! This is so true :) And why I leave my money at home, then I am not tempted to spend it.
Kelly Tirman says
seriously – no wonder kids grow up thinking we are made of money. I walked to the public library last week with the kids thinking I was “safe” and I still spent $25.
Jen says
Oh you silly, silly girl.
Kisatrtle says
That sounds all too familiar. Of course, we are buried in snow today. 7 inches and counting, and I didnt pay for that entertainment. Unfortunately I’d pay for it to go away…
Chasing Joy says
LOL You are so funny :-) I’ve never been to a pumpkin patch. When I go I’ll take my wallet.
Angel says
See if you lived here the pumpkin pathc is free, the corn maze is free, the pumpkins regardless of size are 5 bucks and a hay ride is 4 bucks per person.
Jamie says
I am a sucker for both of those events. Dollar and dimed all the way home too!
Kimberly says
See your lucky. In my Canadian neck of the woods we don’t have pumpkin patches. Well we didn’t look hard enough for them but that’s not the point here…we bought ours from a grocery store and my kid was still super happy about it.
So note to MK: go to the grocery store next year.
Jannica says
We have the coolest punkin patch here in NY, it costs $1 for any size pumpkin, it’s even better when your car gets stuck in the mud with a 20 month old and a three year old who demanded to wear underwear even though he’s not potty trained. Super fun.
Amber says
I’m with the other “cheaters” and I got my kids pumpkins while I was grocery shopping. :)

I know it’s late but this was too funny. I have been there and done that. Love to hear Part II – – “This one Time…At The Farmer’s Market”…
