Some people decorate trees and figs and roast nuts on open fires to celebrate the coming of the holidays. While I do love nuts, I typically have a different tradition I look forward to each year and that is…The Crafty Christmas Party with Mrs. Claus.
That’s right, the weekend before Christmas Mrs. Claus shows up at my house to throw a Christmas Party designed just. for. kids. And while that kind of thing generally goes against everything I stand for, Mrs. Claus embraces the children and the crafting and the mess.
My small nieces and nephews and little friends begin with breakfast. Good crafting is not done on an empty stomach so Mrs. Claus fills the little bodies with pancakes, syrup hot cocoa, and any other form of sugar she can get her hands on.
As soon as the children are adequately filled with sugar, Mrs. Claus walks them through a number of ornament making crafts. The children try their hand at Mod Podging fabric to glass ornaments. A lovely mess that doesn’t bother Mrs. Claus ONE BIT.
The children learn to make snowman ornaments from their handprints and pretty minty looking ornaments. Mrs. Claus loves to take her time with each child and encourages them to get creative.
Mrs. Claus marvels at each of their beautiful creations!
And at the end of the day? The children leave with a bag filled with their very own homemade ornaments, delicious Christmas cookies, candy canes, and a pat on the head from Mrs. Claus herself!
And Mrs. Claus??
She beckons her elves for some help with the clean up situation…she’s getting too old for that you know?
I wish some of you would invite Mrs. Claus to YOUR home for a Christmas party. She would certainly start a great new tradition for you too!
