I love this video by Jenna Marbles about why girls hate each other. Granted she curses like crazy, she really has a great message here. Which is basically that girls hate each other because we’re raised to compete and compare ourselves with one another. As women this eventually crosses from sports and test taking to looks and status (social/financial etc).
In her own goofy way Jenna goes on about how to break the cursed cycle of mean girls, which is to accept that there will always be prettier, wealthier, more popular people in this world and that once it’s been accepted…FREEDOM.
“You don’t have to be better, you just have to be you!” she says. Something every girl kind of KNOWS but for whatever reason just can’t always LIVE.
It’s amazing how even as grown women we find ourselves comparing and hating other women who seem to have it all. Women with the perfect kids, perfect hair, nice cars, happy marriages, successful blog…whatever it is….it’s still in us. Even though we know better.
What do you think? Is it as simple as Jenna makes it?:

Um. I love her. Never knew about her before today, but seriously, want to be her BFF4LYFE. She’s got a GREAT message, so great I might have to learn this message word for word and sit my 3 year old down and have a chat. The f-bombs might keep her attention (and make her the most popular preschooler in her school.)
Iove jenna marbles, shes nuts but this video’s message was very good. Thanks for.reminding us!
I just love Jenna, I spent hours one day watching a ton of her videos cracking up!
I never heard of Jenna before today either, but this is a great message. I have said this stuff for years, except not as just a girl thing only. You ever seen to guy friends compete? Not a pretty sight. If you have more than one kid then you have seen it there too.
Great video. Thanks for sharing it.
So funny and sooooo true!
I must have fallen and hit my head at a young age, because I’ve never felt like I needed to compete with other females. I know there are women who are smarter/prettier/more successful/more yada yada yada…so what?
I compete with myself – try to be the best “me”. I don’t always succeed, but I haven’t given up yet. I think the only change in my attitude is that I don’t give a rat’s ass if anyone else thinks I’m weird – I embrace my weirdness.
I’ve never heard of her before this and, from this video alone, am sold on all things her. She’s a riot! Thanks Kat!
Love the video and agree with her. But shes not right. Its not easy. Why? Cause we are all human.
Never seen or heard of Jenna before this and I love her. LOVE her. She is dead on.
Thanks.
I absolutely LOVE Jenna! She is hilarious!! Next Elle & Blair she is the one I youtube stalk the most lol.
I like how you say “successful blog” at the end.
“Which is basically that girls hate each other because we’re raised to compete and compare ourselves with one another.”
This girl’s a moron. How do you think boys are raised? The exact same way.
I don’t think boys are raised the same way. Boys are encouraged to be competitive, but it’s usually not devious. Girls are often taught to be catty and conniving. We need to be aware of it with both sexes, yes, but I don’t think that makes any of her points invalid. I think she’s right about one thing – we waste so much time being jerks to each other when we should all just accept each other and support each other.
Perfect message for girls…Its not until we get older (and some still don’t) that we realize that those people that we “envy” or think have “all that” really don’t.
Just be the best YOU…and be genuine. People like that. Really, at least the one’s worth hanging around do!!
xoxo girls!!
