Sometimes kids say things so innocently and sweetly that it just kind of catches your breath. Maile loves to learn, she loves reading books about nature and animals and spouts off random information about whatever she’s learning all the time. Recently she had a friend over and their idea of a good time was to flip through books and write out ‘fact’ cards.
“Ooh look at this! Tiger cubs leave their mother when they are around 2 years of age. Whoaaa…I’m writing that on my fact card are you??”
The other night I was putting her to bed and she was all, “Did you know when a baby whale is born it’s mommy and daddy pushes it up to the top of the water so it can get it’s first little breathe?”
And I was all, “Really? No, I didn’t know that…but I believe it. Mommies and Daddies will do whatever they need to make sure their babies catch their breath.”
And then I was all, “You know what? I’d really love it if you drew me a picture of a baby whale being pushed to the top…you think you can make me one in the morning?”
And so she did:
Freaking adorable.
And of course, she’s right.

She is quite talented and that picture is adorable..

Well I’m biased, but I DO think she’s a great little artist! :) Maybe I can start having her do ALL my Friday cartoon. ;)

Awesome pic! It should be in a book!!
Mama Kat says
Isn’t it sweet!?! I have to admit, when I asked her to draw it, this is not at all what I was envisioning! The way she has both parents pushing the baby all the way out of the water is SO sweet!

What a great picture…and a fun factoid! Not too long ago my daughter informed me beluga whales molt….what the what? Whales molt?!?! Of course I looked it up…..turns out she’s right….this does not bode well for me especially given that she is not even 3 yet…..
Mama Kat says
Well now I’M going to have to google search molt! :)
I looked up a whale’s first breath too, just to make sure and yep there it was. I looked forever for a Youtube video that shows it, but found nothing. Boo YouTube!

That is the sweetest thing I have seen (and read) all day. Enough to make me feel a little less jaded. Thank you, Maile and Mom.

My middle girl is a factologist. And that drawing is beyond awesome. Also, I just learned a new fact to share with my coworkers. I’m gonna whip it out randomly, right when they’re in the middle of the economic analysis for water safety regulations. “Speaking of whales…”
Emmy says
She is a good artist! Love it
Sunday Stilwell says
That is quite possibly the cutest whale picture ever. Clearly National Geographic will be calling you up any moment to ask to use it.
BalancingMama (Julie) says
Wow, she drew those so well! I don’t think I could draw that. And yes, adorable!
Erin says
That is the best picture! Forget Disneyland, that girl needs to go to Sea World! Maybe she could draw cartoons for other Sea World goers and make some money?
Joanne says
That is so sweet!
Kristen says
That is awesome! It may be time to change the name of your blog to ProudMamaKatsLosinIt.com
Jennifer says
You should submit this to Galit (These Little Waves). She is collecting art work from kids for a book that will be published.

I would like her autograph, no joke.

Could she PLEASE come over and give my 12 year old a drawing lesson?
Marta says
Freaking adorable indeed. I couldn’t draw that well myself.

This? Took my breathe away. Stunning, lovely, brilliant girls – love.
Susan in the Boonies says
Oh. This is wonderful! I love that you thought to ask her to do that. I love that she thought your idea was great and that she WANTED to do it. I love that you are thrilled with what she produced.
That’s a lot of love, and I haven’t even gotten to the part where I say I ALSO love the picture itself!
Hugs!

Love that drawing and the great message. Weird coincidence but my daughter and I just happened to catch a nature show about just this very phenomenon. We were both transfixed. Thanks!
