Man Shoes Discussed

My sister Baby had been waiting for me to write about my man shoes. She knew the story, but wanted to savor the details a bit at leisure. When she finally got to read it on Thursday she quickly followed up on Gmail’s instant messenger:

Baby: did you continue to wear them after that?

me: Honestly I had no other shoes! Of course I did.

Baby: KATHY!!!!   HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAH! oh my gosh I would have gone to school barefoot before I was caught dead in the same shoes as my teacher.  again.  now THAT is confidence. This is going to make me smile all day long.

Baby: One time a boy told me my boots looked like pirate boots and i never wore them again. mostly cause I agreed that the way i was wearing them did have a pirate vibe.  I found another way to wear them and proceeded to do so after I moved.

me: Hahaha…pirate boots? See I would have just kept wearing them and tried to dodge that guy ever again.

Baby: i mean, how did it not come up EVERY day? there you are in your man shoes… again…I would have been mortified…scarred. I’d have a hard time buying shoes alone ever again or maybe just make the mental note to stay out of the men’s section. issue averted.

me: My next shoes after that were Timberland knock offs from Volume. I specifically remember walking with Emily and Jill and Jill talking about ghetto people wearing Timberland knock offs. And yet there I was. Still kept wearing them. They also went on and on about the hideous navy blue/black combo. A BIG fashion no no…As I sat there in my black hoodie and navy blue sweats. I feel like I was thinking “I wonder why people hate those colors together…I mean the way I’M wearing them is probably fine…”

me: Teresa used to talk about how she’d rather die than wear tapered sweat pants to school and yet there I’d be in tapered sweat pants. Just chillin.  She’d be like “Kathy you totally get away with it…I just…can’t”   Nary a red flag raised.

Baby: trying so hard not to laugh out loud at work…

We’re just lucky that dressing in boy clothes was kind of the ‘style’ in the 90′s. I guess I hit that trend out of the park…which is exactly why I drag my feet with the current trends. Skinny jeans?

Don’t make me.

What was a fashion trend you have loved or hated?

I grew up in the 80′s. Here in th UK one of the biggest boy bands around were called ‘Bros’, I suspect they didn’t really make it big across the atlantic…

Anyway, their fans were called ‘Brosettes’ and they all used to copy the boys from Bros by wearing the stoppers from bottles of Grolsch, attached to their shoes.

I could never figure out why and to this day, they very though of it makes me cringe!

I, of course, did not look an inch out of place going to school in lace, fingerless gloves, a la Madonna….

:)

I cannot get on board with skinny jeans. I’m sorry, unless you are a 4 to 8 year old girl, they do NOT look good on anyone.

And have you heard of drop-crotch pants? OMG! I’m doing a post about them tomorrow. It’s insanity. I’ve spent all my life trying to avoid that catastrophe, as a woman with a nearly non-existent waist, and now it’s a trend? Shoot me.

I don’t pay attention to trends, but I remember when my daughters did.

What I hated most were the spandex shorts with lace on the bottom.

Yuck!

They reminded me of my mother’s girdle – who the hell wanted to wear one of those?

I always hated stirrup pants. Are your ankles cold? I never understood the concept of pants under your foot that inevitably made the pants look like they were being pulled down. I’ve been seeing people in them recently (my eyes!) and I want to ask them if they aren’t from 1987 (and recently found while rummaging in one’s mother’s basement storage), what store are you buying them from so that I can boycott it?

The curly perms were a biggie for me back in the day…now..I cringe just looking at the pics or thinking of them.
And I can’t believe I wore parachute pants with thighs and hips like mine.:)

Will ballerina flats ever come back in again? I wore them all the time in the early ’80′s, and they were so dang comfortable.
But for all I know, they’ve been in and out several times since then.

Remember those mud-ugly clunky shoes with big ugly fat heels and fat soles? Hated those.

High wasted jeans. Of course all jeans were high wasted back then, but OMG. Hideous. Especially on a short wasted girl like me. Photo evidence proves that I had no torso during that period of time. I was all boobs and legs.

Stirrup pants! I keep expecting to see them back any day. Probably won’t go there again, but loved them in the day. Which is not to say that I wore them fashionably, because who knows?

We bought a couch a few years ago and when we told a sales person we were looking for blue she said, “Too bad it’s not in style.” When we laughed openly at her she said, “…but I hear it’s coming back!” We assured her it would be back in and out a number of times before we were done with the couch.

I’m not into really any of the current trends. I like figure flattering not trendy… not that my wardrobe is either. It’s an unfortunate mash of old t-shirts, hubby’s old t-shirts, and the old jeans and tops I wore before my daughter was born 4 years ago.

I need a wardrobe overhaul.

My wardrobe aside, though, I think the trends that top my most hated list are the “Belt with Absolutely Everything” look for women and the “My Jeans are So Skinny that Half My Sperm Just Died” look for men.

Oh giant hair, to be sure. And I have naturally straight hair, so it took a TON of work for me to have the biggest hair in the world, but so worth it. No it wasn’t. Love your blog- you’re awesome! Happy SITS Day.

HATED the tops so short the belly showed. Actually, I still see them today quite often but, living through 3 daughters trying to sport that style was a nightmare. I could just strangle that Brittny Spears.

I loved learning some more about your man shoes! Have I told you lately how much you crack me up? Seriously, I hate the skinny jeans. I am thin and petite, but I have always had hips and a bum so skinny jeans just accentuates those…I don’t like that!!! I saw a special on fashion no nos about 8 or 9 years ago on how tapered jeans or pants just make you look wider on top (hips, etc.) which is why they did the wide leg look because it evens you out. I also never liked the penny loafers even though I owned a pair to fit in…bahahahahah. Happy Tuesday woman!
