Oscars Are Not Roses

Post image for Oscars Are Not Roses

I have never really understood the Oscar hype. I kind of get why someone might enjoy receiving an award…after all who doesn’t want to be named the BEST at something in front of their peers and competition?

What I don’t really understand is why so many of us regular folk are enamored with watching the award show. We bust out the appetizers, champagne, and sometimes throw parties to celebrate winners. We drool over every dress displayed on the red carpet and are disappointed when our favorites don’t take home the gold.

I couldn’t watch the show this year and here’s why:

1. The Oscars are not iCarly
If Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber and the cast of iCarly is not somehow included then we’re not watching. Elementary school girls are in charge of the TV in this house.

2. Movie watching is for lazy people.
Seriously who has time for watching movies? Not me, I’m much busier do TONS of other important things. I won’t list them all here because I don’t want you to feel bad about yourself, but watching MTVs The Challenge is on my short list.

3. Oscar winners don’t always attend
The last time I saw a movie in the theater was Ratatouille in 2007 (an Oscar winner I might add), but neither the rat nor the chef even attended that year’s award ceremony. It was just very disappointing to see other people accept on their behalf.

4. Fashion experts are messed up
Not only do I think it’s really strange for people to be so obsessed with any particular dress a star chooses to wear to an awards show “OMG ANGELINA!! WHAT ARE YOU WEARING!!?!”, but when Joan Rivers and Kelly Osbourne became appointed experts for red carpet fashion input and advice I pretty much dropped dead.

5. No performances
During any awards show for music where singers/song writers are awarded for their craft we actually get to see them perform. It’s a great way to breathe life into the stuffy awards show atmosphere and we get to see their talent in action. I’d really appreciate it if the Oscars would follow suit and arrange for some monologues, perhaps a little improv to take place throughout the course of the show. Let’s see these actors and actresses doing what they do best on stage.

6. Oscars are not roses
I typically try only to watch shows where roses are handed out as a symbol of appreciation and love. The current statues aren’t even made of pure gold and I simply can’t support that. Go gold or go home as I always say.

Are the Oscars your cup of tea? What’s your favorite or least favorite part of the Academy Awards?

You are a very funny writer. I laughed out loud at all the truth.
Thank you. I didn’t watch the oscars.

Nope, it bores me to tears, so I didn’t watch either.

MTV’s Challenge is on my short list as well. Especially when that challenge includes CT.

Ha! You’re awesome. Handing out roses would have been awesome. And I agree with the alleged “fashion experts” – they never know WHAT they’re talking about! I handed out my own kind of awards last in my post, because apparently I am the expert. Ha.

LOL! Love this. I only watch award shows for their opening act…or to see Christian Bale or Johnny Depp. Other than that…its a waste of time. Last night I watched Everybody Loves Raymond for about 10 mins, then? The back of my eyelids

Love this post! Totally agree with all points. I don’t think I have ever watched the Oscars all the way through and since having kids haven’t watched it ever. Seems like a big snorefest to me.

I don’t watch Award shows at all and I am starting to wonder why hillbillies seem to be the stars of every reality show out there now. What’s up with that? But I can totally relate to the elementary school girl in charge of the TV thing. That’s exactly how it works around here.

I don’t think I’ve ever watched the Oscars.

Best part for me this year is that suddenly the 11 y.o. daughter cared enough to throw a party for the family – and did all the cooking, printed out bet sheets, etc. It’s the first time I’ve watched in years. As soon as she goes to college, I’ll stop again.

I did watch the Oscars, as I do every year. I’m a big awards show junkie… I love them all. My faves are definitely the music related ones… really, loved the Grammys this year. And I thought Billy Chrystal did an awesome job last night!!!

I’ve never watched one of these awards shows. Something tells me I’m not missing much.

I watch to make fun of it, mostly. And to see who has done botox – not on their faces but under their arms – it keeps them from sweating in those fancy gowns. One year the winner for Foreign Language Film (Susanne Bier – a favorite of mine) let her sweat show on her silk dress. And honestly that made me happy. But let’s face it the Oscars are completely rigged. My two cents. Love your blog!

I must agree with Mary – I always enjoy various festivities a bit more when I’m an active participant in the Peanut Gallery! (And my lord, the fodder they provide for my heckling is pure gold!) – All that said, I missed it this go ’round as my miniature ones were hellbent on yet another viewing of Cars 2, ripe with threats of staging a two-munchkin hunger strike and/or adding fuel to the fire that is my insomnia. Gotta choose your battles, no?

I always skip it. Clearly my taste doesn’t match the taste of whoever nominates movies. I vote for my favorites with my wallet.

I didn’t watch. But, actually, I now rarely watch any awards shows at all. B/c I got burnt out on having to watch them and write about every little detail last year. Now, I don’t even want to see tweets about them.

I only saw bits and pieces when I was switching from one DVR’d show to another. I’m just not drawn to those shows anymore.

I love the Oscars! I was the girl on the treadmill yesterday at 1:00 watching on the pre-show crap. Yep, I know. Pathetic!

When I realized that I had only seen one of the movies nominated I went to bed. Is it just me or did Angelina look like she was lifting her leg to pee at one point? Is it possible to be too think or too rich?

Favorite part? Laughing at Angelina Jolie’s leg! I hate when people do that. Oh sure, I tried it once. In High School! And it makes you look stupid. Especially when you spend ten minutes on live tv getting it in the right place and by then the camera has already zoomed in to keep it out of view.

I just go to People or some other source the next day to gawk at the ugly dresses that some celebrities wear- but yea have no desire to watch.

Well, I am celeb obsessed and totally lazy enough to watch movies constantly. So, yes. I LOVE the Oscars. However, this year SUCKED.

PS: don’t hate!

Hey the Biebs was actually apart of the Oscars this year in the opening lol I had it on, but didn’t actually watch it. I was too busy farming and finding hidden objects.
