I asked Laina to draw a picture of herself reading because it’s something she loves to do.
Junie B. Jones is a classic around here and I’m not sure how I feel about the little hoodlum because she says ‘stupid’ and does naughty things, but she makes my kids want to read so I just let it happen. To be honest, I’m kind of surprised my kids don’t say that word considering I call anything stupid that doesn’t work in our house.
Stupid oven.
Stupid internet connection.
Stupid stairs that trip me on the way UP.
Seriously, who trips going UP stairs? How does one fail to raise their foot that extra half inch?
It’s the stairs.
They move.
Anyway, Junie B. Jones is our girl here and she says stupid and maybe that’s exactly why my girls love her so much. They get to read the word they’re not allowed to say.
The other day during reading time Laina brought me her book and pointed to the capitalized words, “Should I go in my room to read, ’cause I have to read that part loudly…”
She read in a room with the door closed, but I could hear her yelling those capitalized words from the kitchen. Naturally I had to go in and quickly video tape it:
Her enthusiasm is overwhelming no?

How cute. I’ve always thought if it fosters a love of reading in them – then let them read it.
By the way, I fall UP the stairs all the time. I never thought to blame it on the stupid stairs!

I have to say my daughter and I both laugh out loud while reading Junie B. Jones. It’s really such an honest look into the mind of a kindergartner and how the world seems to them. Love it.

That’s too cute. My daughter likes Junie B. Jones as well. I don’t really know any girl around her age that doesn’t like her!

I can not get my daughter to want to read and it drives me crazy. I’m an avid reader and I had hoped that both kids would be too. I’ve read to them both since they were babies, but she has no interest at all. She doesn’t even want me to read to her anymore.

I’m imagining a picture of your behind may appear on the internet soon, if she sees this… but I won’t tell her.

YES!! I agree! When my daughter received a Junie B Jones book, I was excited… until I started reading it with her. Oh my!! I am still not sure about that girl. But, we use it as a learning tool on how NOT to be in different situations. PS… saying stupid isn’t a problem around our house. We (okay, I and now the kids do it too) make a dog growling noise instead ;) grrrr….

I can fall both up and down stairs so I’m multi talented. Also my kids love Junie B Jones too!!!

Junie B. Jones is the new Fudge. Both characters are big faves of mine. I like to read the books with my students, and I present both characters as KIDS THEIR PARENTS WARNED THEM ABOUT so they’ll want to read more. I create rebellious readers AND fall up the stairs…hmmmmm…
