The following is the perfect demonstration of exactly how Pat and I differ as parents.
Kainoa is four and looks at any random thing and asks us how to spell them. He knows, by watching his sisters, that this is something I respond to.
Last night he yelled to me from his room, “Mom??? How do you spell BE QUIET?”
And without hesitation I say “B-E-Q-U-I-E-T” because even though I know it goes in one ear and out the other, 2% of me thinks just MAYBE he’ll be a child genius when he goes into Kindergarten and he’ll be able to spell BE QUIET to his class without even THINKING about it.
On the other side of the house, in the bathroom, Laina had heard Kainoa shout the question and she repeated it to Pat who happened to be fixing a plugged bath tub.
“Daddy how do you spell Be Quiet?” She asked.
And without hesitation he answered, “L-A-I-N-A”.
Apparently he doesn’t hold that same 2% faith that I have.

Well, if he’s not a child genius in kindergarten you can give Pat all the blame. ;-)

Exactly!

Your husband is just quietly hilarious :)

bwhahahaha yeah I have been guilty of the same.. like the time my youngest was on his what if this or that questions, you know the ones where whatever you answered with resulted in another but what if question. One day in a restaurant after about 300 of those questions I said what if your lips were made of velcro, then you couldn’t ask so many questions. He paused for a moment before replying, yeah I could I would just make that scratchy velcro noise everytime I did.

Hahaha! That is AWESOME…my Mom says I was that ‘what if’ child. Just constantly coming up with scenarios that drove her crazy. She said she could never actually answer a question because it would just lead to another and another and another. Poor woman. I like your effort to beat him at his own game though!

Gotta love husbands and their ways of handling things! I just tell myself that no matter what they’re talking about when they go off to brush Lilybug’s, she’s 4 too, teeth (the current theme is zombies) that she’ll turn out fine in the end, lol!
Mama Kat says
We can only pray that is the case…but if they’re entirely screwed up 20 years from now we know who to blame. :)

XD Exactly!

Haha! I love clever comebacks. Actually, I covet them, as I am usually unable to pull them out of thin air like that.
MaryLauren@My3LittleBirds says
I spell it C-A-B-E-R-N-E-T : )
Marta says
LOL.
I’d still hold out for the chance of a child prodigy. You just never know. =)
Dionne says
Hahahah…I am so like you! I would have spelled it too. Your hubby cracks me up.
Laural Out Loud says
We are always teasing my daughter, and I’ll be damned if she didn’t repeat something to her teacher and we got a note home asking what she was talking about, that it could be a concern. So now I’m on the straight and narrow and answer all of her questions correctly (including how to spell things). My husband still hasn’t come around, lol, but at least she’s only getting it half as much as she used to.
Holly from 300 Pounds Down says
I feel somewhat bad about this b/c sometimes when my kids ask me to spell things I say “I don’t want to spell!!” I can’t believe how many times my kids ask me to spell things! Does anyone remember the Speak N Spell?? WE need this asap!!
Jennifer says
I don’t get it. Is that because I’m a mom?
