Girlfriends are the best.
They lift you up when you’re low and they knock you down a notch when you’re too high.
They keep you right there next to them where you belong.
I’ve always been thankful for my sisters because it’s like having girlfriends that you sometimes want to kill built right into your family. Having them has meant I’ve never been bored in a corner chair at Grandma’s house while Mom yaps for hours.
This one time, I laid in my bed on my side of the room and my little sister was on the other side and I was all “Baby?” and she was all “Yeah?” and I was all “Tell me the truth…and be honest, I promise I won’t get mad I just really want to know the truth.” and she was all “Okay.” and I was all “Do you think I’m pretty?”
There was silence in the dark. I blinked. Waiting. I could feel her thinking carefully. One thing you should know about Baby it’s that when you ask her to tell you the truth about something she’s going to take that task seriously.
“Well?” I asked again… “do you?”
And then she said the words that would stick with me for the rest of my life.
“I do think you’re pretty…when your hair is wet.”
I smiled to myself in that dark room. I had always had a feeling about myself with wet hair. The way it stayed slicked back just the way I wanted it, but when it was dry it just flattened stick straight all around my face.
I was happy with her answer…even though there was a tiny voice in my head wondering what on Earth I was going to do with my hair during the 98% of the day that it was actually dry.
I supposed as long as I had access to water I’d be okay.

I love the way my hair looks when its wet so I thought I will buy that hair gel called wet it will make my hair look all cool and sexy all the time….yeah it sucks…take my word for it!

What is it about wet hair? I love when my hair is wet and falls just so… unfortunately, I don’t get the same result when it’s dry. My little sister probably would not have been as nice as yours, she is stingingly honest… not necessarily a good thing!!! :)

Hahaha! That is so cute. How old was she? I look like a drowned rat when my hair is wet, so her answer surprised me.

What girl hasn’t looked at herself, fresh faced with slicked back wet hair, straight out of the shower or pool, and thought, “Damn. I’m hot. With wet hair.”? I know I have.

I love this. I have four sisters and it’s exactly as you describe it. Having girlfriends you sometimes want to kill built right in to your family! As well as girlfriends who always have your back. I have one sister who refuses to take the bait when you’re fishing for complements – even when you’re honest about the fishing. I remember once complaining to her that I felt fat. All I needed her to say was, “you’re not fat, you look great.” Instead she said, “well, go on a diet.” To this day she’s still like that. Recently I had her read the student evaluations from a class I teach before I did because I was afraid they would be awful. She read them, handed them back, and said, “You should read them. You’ll learn something.” And I did – fortunately it wasn’t a huge lesson. Thanks for your blog. Always enjoy it.

That is just too funny! I suspect I am much better looking with wet hair too. Oh well!

Perfect definition of sisters! I’ve got two, both younger. I don’t know what I’d do without them. I actually feel sorry for girls with no sisters.
As for the hair thing, wet is definitely not a good look for me.

That is so sisterly. Love it. Once time one of my sisters wanted me to go to the mall with her, and I said, “But I look terrible.” And she paused, then said, “But it doesn’t matter.” Honesty.

Cute! My hair looks so much better wet, too.
Sisters are great. :)

Only girls who are TRULY beautiful look good with wet hair.
Hair is my camouflage for my not-so-pretty face.
You ARE pretty, Kat!

Oh good grief! I was a swimmer, so of course I couldn’t be the one who looked good with my hair wet. Not that swimmer’s hair looks good dry either. I can’t help noticing the hoodie photo above it and think NO WONDER we barely ever see your hair! (I never thought of that before.) Let your hair down Mama Kat! It’s beautiful!

Oh my goodness, the line “I’ve always been thankful for my sisters because it’s like having girlfriends that you sometimes want to kill built right into your family.” is so stinkin’ funny and SO true. I read it out loud to my sister as we sit at my mom’s house this week. We laughed out loud. Thanks for sharing! :)

I once told my sister that she had fat knees. 25 years later she still holds a grudge. I remember saying “You’re lucky it’s only your knees.”
