1.) Write about a time your child embarrassed you in public.
Kainoa played excitedly at the sand table.
“Mom watch THIS!”
He filled a green bucket and covered a pile of shells completely with it.
“Nice Buddy!” I said, even though covering shells with sand is not even remotely cool. It was funny watching him be so happy with a table of SAND.
A woman walked out and he was all “HI!!!” and I smiled on proudly. My kids have always been so timid around strangers and it felt good to see him outgoing and friendly.
“Hi!” she smiled back enthusiastically.
Look how he just made her day! Amazing to think a little four year old can brighten a strangers day. Kids have that way about them that’s so therapeutic for adults.
“I can build a castle!!” he said.
I was surprised at how sweet he had become to this perfect stranger…maybe my boy was really turning a corner in life!
“That’s great!” responded the happy woman.
“I WASN’T TALKING TO YOU!” he shouted.
And just like that it was over.
I’m not sure how the woman reacted…I was too busy burying my head in the sand.
Ginger@NJAMT says
Who was he talking too??? LOL! That would be embarassing for sure!
Happy Thursday! :)
Mama Kat says
Apparently he was talking to me. :) I guess the silver lining is at least he was being nice to his mother!
Gretchen says
I don’t care who he was talking to, that’s one CUTE little man!
Kim says
This kid shows real promise…lol
MJ says
I sympathise. My 2 year old pretty much shrieks should a stranger dare look at her these days.
Mama Kat says
Sometimes I want to holler over, “He really is a great kid!! Once you get to know hiiiiiim!!!”
Cathy says
I wish I could report that those things get better as children grow older but it only seems to gain momentum!
Linda says
I had so many embarrassing moments with my children, I couldn’t even start to pick one! This was cute…the wonderful(?) thing about children is their total honesty…
Mama Kat says
Yep I agree…if I didn’t have to be totally responsible for making sure they’re polite to people I would 100% be entertained by their quippy honest remarks.
Dianna says
Cute story! Yes, as Linda said, children are brutally honest!
Victoria KP says
Wow, that totally sounds like something one of my kids would say. Honesty is great, but….
Kimberly says
They have no filter.
I won’t lie, some days I want mine removed…for shats and giggles.
Mama Kat says
Sometimes they say exactly what we’re thinking. :)
Natalie @MamaTrack says
That’s awesome. Love it! But at least the sand was there for you to bury your head in….
Mommy Boots says
Choked on my coffee.
OMFG.
dumb mom says
#3 same thing. At grocery store. He’s checking off things on our list: bananas, check! orange, check! milk, check! Some lady behind us goes, “you’re so cute, check!”. His response? “Why are you saying check? You don’t have the list and I don’t even know you.” Awesome.
Mama Kat says
Hahahaha! Oh my gosh that is so funny. Isn’t it hard to stifle your laugh and reprimand them properly? When Kainoa did it I let out a bit of a shocked laugh, but then had to be all “KaiNOa! We do NOT talk to people like that!!” Sometimes I reprimand my kids like that just so the adults near by can think “Well she’s doing all she can…”
Arnebya @whatnowandwhy says
And then I crossed my legs to not pee a little. OMG they are so filterless but I love it.
Nicki says
Haha! Kids are so awesomely honest, aren’t they? If only adults could be as honest!
Nicki says
Sorry for posting my link twice. I messed up the first one. Feel free to remove #24 if you can. I tried! Sorry!!
Delilah says
Hahaha! That’s something my kids would do. They live to embarrass me, I’m sure of it. I keep telling them, one day I will return the favor. My oldest goes into middle school next year. It’s time, boy. Beware!!
Jennifer says
That’s kind of awesome. I wish I could talk that way to people (sometimes) and get away with it as well as a cute kid does.
Mama Kat says
I agree…in fact sometimes I get mad at myself for NOT speaking up under the right circumstances. Obviously shouting “I WASN’T TALKING TO YOU!” is quite what I have in mind, but there are plenty of times I’ve been too polite and regretted not speaking my mind later on!
christina says
hahaha i love it!! :)
the other day i had to stop to pee (couldn’t make it to the park and then home) so i stopped at a Wendy’s and while we’re in there i’m all “ew, this is so nasty” cuz, well, it really is/was. and Lovie’s all, “MAMA YOU GO POTTY?! EW IT’S STINKY!” it’s funny how when i need to hear her, she speaks quietly but then when you’re in a situation like that, she scream-talks. of course. i need to get used to this, i suppose. :)
Julie says
haha! At least he was being honest :)
Jennifer@ The Mommy Mambo says
HehHeeehhh! I’m always proud of a good healthy fear and smart mouth towards strangers. I think if they get kidnapped….they’ll be brought back promptly :)
Mama Kat says
Haha! YES!
a Book for My Daughter says
As I was reading this story, I kept trying to predict what embarrassing thing your son was about to do—boy was I wrong. You made me literally laugh out loud—thank you!
May says
You and I both had embarrassing moments to share today. What were the odds?! hmm…..Pretty good actually!
Peg says
So funny! My kids did stuff like that too. I sometimes wish I’d lose my filter just for a few minutes! My youngest who is now almost 21 has the innate ability to say really sarcastic mean things to people and they laugh thinking she’s joking when she’s actually just suffering from a total lack of tact!
Emily @ My Pajama Days says
LOL! I wish I could tell you that it gets better as they get older. My teenager tells me often, “I’m not talking to you!”. Although, I have to admit, sometimes that’s a blessing.
Arnebya @whatnowandwhy says
I am giggling because I find it very difficult not to laugh when kids show their lack of filter, especially my own.
angie lee says
I can’t stop laughing. There’s nothing worse than that or when they loudly ask why that person is so fat or is so dirty or has that huge birthmark. But I’m sure your kids have never done that. Or caught your child right after they uttered “butt-head” to a sunbathing woman in Mexico (this was 3 years ago) with a fist full of sand ready to throw it on her FOR NO REASON. :)
Janice says
Ahahahaha! That was hilarious! I feel bad for the woman stranger. Oh but man, would I have loved to see this in person! Haha!
Jenn says
Oh, that woman didn’t know what hit her, but to be honest, he was talking to you. Filters. Wish I could buy them.
For me, it’s my daughter in the public loos. “I don’t have to wee…do YOU have to wee? Oh, you did Mummy, good job”
Aack
Michelle @ Changed By The Maker says
Oh, such a funny story! My husband and I both had to laugh out loud. Good stuff! Thanks for the prompts — I’m liking them!
Marta says
LOL.
Ah I can’t wait for my children to begin regularly embarrassing me in public.
Grace Pamer says
Too funny! I wasn’t talking to you. I can picture the scene. Ah bless, it’s the kind of statement that makes motherhood so worthwhile!
Have a great weekend Kat
Grace
Tris says
My 3 year old was being admired by an older couple at the grocery store and he said to me “Mom, I don’t want that OLD MAN to talk to me.” I was embarrassed, but secretly hoping that he was old enough that he was hard of hearing and didn’t missed what was said!
Erin says
I’m already in love with your blog!
Such a funny story, I can’t help but love the filterless comments that come out of children’s mouths!
SMHMama says
How has this NOT happened to me yet? Too funny. I have very friendly boys. they are always introducing themselves to everyone we meet but luckily they have not gone evil twin on anyone yet.
