1.) Share a story about a stray you took in or an animal you once rescued.
It started with good intentions when our family participated in local rescue group programs by fostering dogs that were brought in. Cecil, Aries, Harry, and Victory were all lovely temporary household pets and we helped each of them find their forever homes.
Now, I adopt animals that come creeping into our yard and SWEAR they’re strays, but have learned that is not always the case.
The other day I saw a small dog wandering around the park without a collar so I unhooked Jack and wrapped his leash around the little pup and walked him straight home.
It feels good to be a hero, but this one got a smidge annoying the moment it began pooping in my house, so I sent him to my backyard until morning where I would begin the hunt for his rightful owners.
In the morning he was gone. He had dug his way out of our yard and I suppose that was part of his problem to begin with. Some animals just don’t know how good they have it.
While riding my bike with Kainoa this passed weekend, we happened upon a happy Golden Retriever. She was so friendly and had it not been for her collar and tags I may have scooped her right into the bike trailer and hauled her home with us.
I know I have a problem.
I see these animals wandering around the streets and before they have a moment to interject, I adopt them.
Finders keepers.
Yesterday I laced up for a walk around the block and Laina came running to the door…
“MOM!?! Will you bring us home a dog today!?!”
“I’ll do my best Laina….I’ll do my best.”
Your pets are safe with me.

I don’t know what in the world I would do if our dog got loose! It hurts my heart to see dogs and cats just roaming around, and I can’t not do anything… regardless of the Mr’s threats, “Don’t bring home anything else that eats or sh*ts!”
Kim @ This Belle Rocks says
Very funny! We have that problem, too….and I chose the same prompt :)

See, if I had ever done that as a kid, my mother would throw an absolute fit. Things you can get away with when you’re the mommy…

Your post is similar to mine. We really believe in animal rescue

Good for you! Seems you’re a combo of my SIL (with the dogs) and me (with the cats). Hope that little guy who dug his way out of your yard got home safe!

Aww Laina, that’s so funny! Kids learn so many great lessons from having pets – it sounds like a fun house to grow up in. :)

You are a special woman, Mama Kat… a special woman. :-)

That’s exactly how my sister-in-law got her cat, Kit-Kat…finders, keepers!

My mom is that way with cats. She adopts every stray cat that finds itself into her yard! When I was a kid she even tamed a wild feral cat and named him Tom. Haha! Tom was a hot mess but he lived out his last 4 years as a member of our family.

Very sweet! If our townhome complex didn’t have a 2 pet restriction, I would totally rescue every cat at the shelter. Maybe some day you and I will be on “pet hoarders.” But we won’t be the crazy people that can’t take care of them. We’ll just have lots and lots of family!

I have an attachment problem too, lol… I find a dog running loose, lassoe him, and by the time we find his owner, I’m already imagining how he’ll fit in living with us forever, and I’m sad to give him back.

I used to collect pets, umm strays. But now I collect kids. I should write a “Your kids are safe with me” post. But really I don’t like other people’s kids as much as my own. Thank God. ;)

I think it is too funny that you just brought him home from the park. Too funny. I wrote a post about a bunny someone tossed in my yard and how we came to find out that bunnies can have HUGE teeth

At least you’re willing to love them! :)

I can totally relate! We “rescued” a cat from our backyard. He looked rather well-fed, but he had no collar and was very scruffy. We put up signs and everything. Turns out he lives a block away and was just visiting. Too bad. He was pretty darn cute!

I’d bring home more dogs, but with three permanent canines in our family, my husband has put his foot down!

For most of my adult life I have run for exercise and sanity. I have ended up with all sorts of dogs following me home. (I wonder if it is because I smell so good) We’ve always managed to find out who they belong to. I don’t have a fenced in back yard. If we did — I bet I’d have more that would end up staying overnight.

Sigh…no chance to blog this week, but we took in a stray cat about 8 yrs ago and he’s still with us. He’s the coolest cat. He’s more like a lab than a cat. We dig our Simba kitty! And I’m pretty sure there’s a neon sign hidden in the woods by my house saying, “softy lives here, wander in at your leisure!”

For me it is a good thing our housse is small or I’d have more then the 3 cats and a dog we have now.
Have you ever watched Dog Town?? If your a lover of helping animals and seeing them get forever homes it is a show you should see. Sometimes a little upsetting because if is hard to imagine people that hurt animals and some of the animals are abused but the good endings that hapen for so many of the dogs will make you smile.
Bridget @ Le. Rheims says
Sounds like what I would be doing, if I had a house instead of an apartment. You see, here, we are allowed to have “anything except cats and dogs”. So apparently my neighbor upstairs who sound likes he has a small elephant running around may in fact HAVE a small elephant. Who can say? Or, the people next door could have a python (shudder to think of that one) or a cayman. But cats and dogs? Apparently, those are just too much for the landlady to deal with. Grr.

I’m dying to know…did you find his owners? I am allergic to most dogs and cats so I can’t bring any home but once, when I was at the shelter with a friend, there was a Husky with one blue eye and one brown one that looked at me willing me to bring him home and I almost did, allergies and all. Thank goodness for your prompt because summer has brought with it writer’s block.

We foster for Retrieve A Golden of Minnesota. We currently have a nine month old female that came from a commercial breeder in Missouri. Before that, we had a ten year old female, who had never, ever lived inside. Fostering is so rewarding!
