Writer’s Workshop: Rice Pudding

Post image for Writer’s Workshop: Rice Pudding

1.) What’s for dinner Mom? Describe a meal your Mom cooked that you dreaded eating growing up.

me: Mom what’s for dinner tonight?
mom: If one more child asks me what’s for dinner I’m going to scream!

me: I understand that you’re frustrated, it’s just I really don’t want rice pudding…
mom: It’s 9am Kathy! I’m not thinking about dinner!!!

me: Will you just not cook rice pudding though?
mom: Out!

So I’d leave the kitchen.

Rice pudding.

There was nothing about that creamy, rice-y, raisin-y concoction that I enjoyed. Not the rice. Not the pudding. Not the raisin. Not nothing.

me: Mom what’s for dinner?
mom: Don’t ask!

me: But it’s starting to smell like…rice…pudding…
mom: Kathy? You will eat what I cook for you! It’s not up for discussion!

me: Will you just not cook rice pudding though?
mom: Out!!

My opinion was not respected. It was part of the price I paid when I became one of six kids. Mother became impatient with our daily dinner inquiries and I was all too often kicked out of the kitchen for what I considered preventative care.

mom: Dinnnnerrr!!!
me: Yay! I’m so hungry! What are we having!?!

mom: Rice pudding.
me: Nooooo!!!!

mom: Would you like to go to bed without any dinner Kathy? I’m not going to listen to you complain!

me: *Shakes fist at heavens*

me: *Takes bite of rice pudding*

me: *Dry heaves*

Now it’s your turn!

“Preventatitive care” – ha! I’m lucky enough that I’ve never had rice pudding; thanks to your warning, I’ll know better than to be wooed by the word “pudding” if anyone ever offers me some. :)

The word pudding definitely threw me for a loop every time…eventually I wised up. I don’t want any part of that crap!

Gotta say, I’m pretty happy my mom never tried rice pudding with us… your description of it, YUCK! That is something I know I’ll never try.

hilljean August 9, 2012 at 1:05 am

Dry heaving a raisin sounds grotesque. So, whats the meal that your kids cant stand?

Reply

Mama Kat August 9, 2012 at 6:07 am

You know I was trying to think of one! My kids are so stinking babied, I really don’t force them to eat anything they don’t want as long as they take one bite. If I had to guess I’d say they hate it most when I make them take a bite of…well any recipe I grab from Pinterest. ;)

Sounds like a good follow up prompt for next week!

You know, it could be kind of cathartic and healing for you to serve them up a dish of the abominable stuff. You could show them how good they have it and how great of a mother you are for not making it on a regular basis. And then it could be a nice fallback when they’re acting terrible. Just say, “Think it’s gonna be a rice pudding sort of evening” and they’ll know you mean business.

Ok. I think I’ve fleshed that out enough now ;)

Have you ever considered authoring a parenting book? Because you totally should.

Your rice pudding was my corn souffle. Yikes.

Rice pudding was dessert in our house… or breakfast… but no raisins!

My mother made liver and onions for us exactly 2 times and made us eat it. Who does that? What child likes liver and onions? We’ve never let her forget it!

Reply

Mama Kat August 9, 2012 at 6:05 am

Liver and onions? OMG you win!

Reply

Bridget @ Le. Rheims August 9, 2012 at 6:26 am

I have a sister who, despite the fact that she won’t eat anything green and is generally very picky, loves liver and onions. Gross.

Reply

Heather August 9, 2012 at 3:40 am

My parents made me eat canned beets. And rabbit.

Yuck.

I so feel your pain!

Reply

Angel August 9, 2012 at 3:43 am

Yeah not sounding too appetizing nor like a dinner food on my side. See if I had known you then I could have sent you care packages of real food lol.

So, was the rice pudding the main course? I would’ve been in heaven…love that stuff and it was considered dessert in my house. And I also love the family photo…so many funny things about it…from the sullen oldest daughter, the too cool brother and the littlest who is getting picked up. Priceless!

Reply

Mama Kat August 9, 2012 at 6:19 am

Yes, the MAIN course! Who does that!?!

And I want you to know I really took one for the team by posting that picture. The oldest sister is not going to be pleased about it…still. But I LOVE it! ps I’m the one with the adorable cabbage patch kid!

Reply

Bridget @ Le. Rheims August 9, 2012 at 4:19 am

Are you the youngest? Because I’m the youngest and I never had to eat a thing I didn’t want. Ever. This hasn’t exactly worked out for me, as I’m an overweight 32 year old, but I also never had to dry heave after eating rice pudding (or vegetables or most fruit or other “gross” things). Maybe the key is to be the youngest of a larger family. I was number 16, and I think by that time, my mom just gave up :)

Reply

Mama Kat August 9, 2012 at 6:05 am

I’m number 4 and you’re the right, the youngest gets everything she wants. I’M NOT HAPPY ABOUT THAT!

But youngest of 16!?!! I cannot even IMAGINE passing that many children through my groin.

Reply

Bridget @ Le. Rheims August 9, 2012 at 6:22 am

To be fair, she had 3 of us via c-section. Then again, she was 40 when she had the twins (who were breech) and 43 when she had me. I have 5 of my own and am expecting in December. I won’t lie. It’s good to be the baby, especially of a large family. :)

Reply

Mama Kat August 9, 2012 at 6:25 am

My Mom too! All 6 of us were c sections. :) I always wanted to recreate my childhood for my kids by having a big family of my own, but then I started having them and was all “Yeah this is hard!”…so we’ve got three. Go you!!

Reply

Bridget @ Le. Rheims August 9, 2012 at 7:21 am

Mine too! Actually, all of my sisters with kids have all had only c-sections. My one sister had 10 of them. So fast, my parents have 50 grandkids (51 is on the way) and 4 great-grandkids. It can but hard, but it’s also awesome.

Amethyst Moon August 9, 2012 at 5:09 am

the thought of raisins in anything is enough to make me heave! Yuck!

I am so mad at myself, I did a video for this week on Tuesday, procrastinated uploading it and doing a post, and then left my phone (with the video) at home today. FAIL. I’ll post tonight and pretend I’m being fashionably late…

Ewww…I’ve never had rice pudding. I think I’ll write my mom a “thank you” card now.

Reply

Tina August 9, 2012 at 6:18 am

Haha! Rice pudding for you, bread pudding for me. It was the texture of it, I think. Plus the raisins. For some reason I cannot stand raisins IN food, even though I love them when they are by themselves. Weird.

Reply

Mama Kat August 9, 2012 at 6:23 am

I think the texture definitely has something to do with it! I’m still not a big pudding/yogurt fan.

Too funny — shakes fists at heaven. That’s one thing I am not missing about having my oldest off to college this fall. *bitty sob* Much harder than I thought because I’m not really the hovering type. But his constant asking what have to eat in the house and what was for dinner — that I don’t miss. I guess that’s just a teenagers job.

Reply

Mama Kat August 9, 2012 at 12:59 pm

Yeah I didn’t realize how super annoying that was until my kids started doing it. Now I react the exact same way my Mom did, “I don’t know…Food…The kind you eat…Out!”

Reply

OneMommy August 9, 2012 at 6:40 am

For me it was always chicken livers -yuck! I was so glad when mom stopped making them.

Reply

Kristen August 9, 2012 at 10:19 am

I agree with livers. Yuck!

I do not get rice pudding. Pudding is sweet smooth goodness. Rice is not sweet and not smooth which automatically disqualifies it as pudding.

Reply

Mama Kat August 9, 2012 at 12:59 pm

Like why would it even occur to anyone to mix the two???

Reply

Arnebya August 9, 2012 at 6:46 am

OK so wait, was rice pudding the main course? I AM ON THE DAMN FLOOR LAUGHING. Even if it was just a side, it doesn’t matter, the thought of a child dry heaving over pudding the way I used to gag at chili or liver and onions is hilarious.

Reply

Mama Kat August 9, 2012 at 1:13 pm

IT WAS THE MAIN COURSE…hang on I gotta call my mom and double check that because it never even occurred to me that Rice Pudding for dinner as a main course doesn’t make ANY sense…yep main course!

Do you like it now?

I never had rice pudding growing up, so the first time I had it was in Turkey (it’s a favorite dessert there) when I was in my 20s. I have to say, although your description is perfect, it somehow grew on me. Would you be completely grossed out if I told you that I love it?

By the way, your last line “dry heaves” made me burst out laughing. Perfect!

Mama Kat August 9, 2012 at 1:14 pm

Honestly, I can’t even bring myself to try it as an adult. I don’t think I could do it.

I die over the family photo.

Jennifer @ Mommy Y August 9, 2012 at 8:25 am

I’ve never had it, but it sounds awful. Poor kid. Mine was macaroni and cheese, but just the Velveeta kind that my mom makes.

Reply

Kristen August 9, 2012 at 10:18 am

I think I share the same thoughts on tapioca pudding. Which is pretty close, I guess. She would even use food coloring to try and disguise it, but who was she fooling? We all knew what that big bowl of bland mushiness was. I blame my sister. She could have eaten it every night. Bleh.

Brand new here…came over from Kitchen Witch. Love your prompts and would love to play along! :)

Oh, and lima beans are the worst on my list.

Welcome! :)

I don’t think I’ve ever had to eat lima beans…maybe my Mom wasn’t so bad after all…

yum, rice pudding :D. I do like it. I didn’t chose this prompt because my mom was a great cook–but my dad on the other hand. I’ll leave you with one menu item he fixed it once when my mom was in the hospital. Pig Heart Sandwiches! Really!

Mo @ The Baby Is Fine August 9, 2012 at 9:09 pm

Mmmmm, I love rice pudding! But as someone mentioned above, I thought it was a dessert! Not sure I would want an “entree-sized” serving of it.

(PS: just realized I mis-read the prompts and didn’t realize the last option was supposed to be a vlog…I just wrote about awkwardness. I suppose that’s awkward in and of itself, so…go me?)

I love reading about your childhood. My mom made really simple but easy meals. The worst was when we’d have brats because my dad insisted on making sauerkraut – seriously? We lived in a very small 2 bedroom house. It made the whole place smell awful. :S

Rice pudding. Turns my stomach just writing those words. I hated rice pudding so much, which brought pure joy to my two older brothers. Rice pudding would mysteriously end up on my pillow, in my shoes, on my toothbrush………They were evil.
