What does your home decor say about you?
This is one of the questions I answered last week on SheKnows Mommalogues and quite frankly the answer is embarrassing. My friend has commented a couple of times about “that un-lived in house” in the background of some of my videos because literally almost none of my walls have been painted and we have very little as far as art or even small accent pieces go.
I was SO proud of myself earlier this year for purchasing a table and lamp to put next to our living room couch! I even texted a picture of it to my Mom and sisters. I was so pleased with myself for accomplishing that great feat. Finally, some soft light in the living room!
It’s been NINE years!
I see white walls and I think they look clean…why mess them up with (omg) color!?! I despise things on my counters. You will find no toasters, cookie jars, or even a flower vase there. I clearly need some help in this department. How do I create a homey home without making it look more cluttered than I think it already does?
What does your home decor say about you? And will you come over and help me?

Of course, I’ll help you. I haven’t got a clue about my house; someone else’s is always much easier.

Hmmmm…. mine says I don’t spend much time here, I’m too cheap to spend the money on googaws, and thinking about painting makes my stomach clench. I did recently get rid of a 70’s brown plaid couch and bought a new loveseat, so that should do me for a decade or so.

My home decor speaks loudly of post-modern baby and somewhat hip pre-teen mixed in with wall murals done by my three year old. Decorating is totally overrated.

My home decor says I live with four farting, burping, ball scratching/licking males. I need a female cat.

I love decorating and house decor. I think each to his own and do what makes you happy. For me that is having solid sofa’s where I can add lots of texture and color with pillows and other things. Then when I get tired I can just do something else. I get very bored so this system works well for me. I recently did a huge purge and have lots less out. Less is better! You don’t need anything on counters if you don’t want! I wish someone from HGTV would just pop in at my house!

I am just like you – I cannot be bothered decorating
When I have to pick paint colors or fabrics I break out into a cold sweat – also every photograph I have ever taken of my kids is either in the camera still or in a box under my bed…..sigh

I’ll come do it! I love to spend other people’s money.
The downside of having knickknacks, etc. is that they need to be dusted. Seriously. I just walked by something on my hearth the other day and realized there were cobwebs ALL OVER that thing. So maybe you are on to something here – no stuff = less dusting.

Maybe we can help each other out to meet a happy medium, because I am too cluttered and just do not seem to know how to get uncluttered. Try as I may. I think I’m a lost cause. If you’re happy with your space, who cares what others think?

Well first things first! Pour yourself a big glass of wine then shop your home.Put a little sumn sumn on your end table such as a stack of books, picture frame. Then behind your sofa do a collage of your kids artwork.Buy some “cheap” frames at the dollar store and spray paint them your favorite color,(take a color cue from your wardrobe). There the first step! No huge investment.Shop the salvation army stores or garage sales for things, start a collection of something you like and group it together on a ledge or table.Next a few throw cute pillows and a cheap throw add a lotta Bang for your buck! Last but not least, more wine because everything looks much better with wine:)

OH I tend to go the other way with my home! I take so much pride in making it homey and beautiful for me and my family! We moved two years ago, and had to renovate and rebuild this destroyed abandoned home into a warm and cozy place to live… and as painful of a process it was- I have grown to behold every tiny detail of it with honor and pride. I host many play dates and lots of different women’s groups and I can’t think of anything more enjoyable than opening up my home for all to hang out and feel comfortable in doing so!!! Once you get started and really dig in to creating your living space you won’t wanna stop!!! You may even save your spending fashion and clothes money for (omg) a new painting on your wall!!!! LOL

My husband recently got a bee in his bonnet about redoing our bedroom. He needed a restful place. We painted the walls white with a drop of gray and got white furniture at IKEA. I have to admit I HATED the no color look – but it’s growing on my and I wasn’t going to be a poop when it was something that really mattered to me. I really have no sense of style. Terribly sad to admit. I have things I like — but pulling them all together. I’m pitiful.

That comment made no sense. I’d like to blame that cat that has refused to leave my lap while I try to type. My white bedroom is growing on me and it mattered to my husband. I like things pulled together but have no idea how to go about doing it. With children and responsibility, the thought of doing another room is exhausting.

Well, my home decor says that I am a cheap person. LOL! I don’t actually like to spend a hundred of bucks for something new. I love going in a bazaar or an auction wherein they sell old stuffs that are still in good condition and then it is up to me to repaint them and make them look like they are new.
