I took the kids on a road trip to Idaho to visit friends and I’d like to present a list of awards I put together to commemorate a weekend filled with 10+ hours of driving, 2 nights/3 days in a hotel with the kids minus my other half, countless trips to the pool, and a depleted pocket book. The award goes to…:
Award for Best Conversation goes to:
Maile and Laina! These two crack me up with their sisterly dialogue, but I think this conversation perfectly captures both of their personalities.
Maile: You wanna play seals?
Laina: Yeah I’m the baby seal!
Maile: Okay, what kind of seal you wanna be? Gray seal? Harp seal?
Laina: Ugh! I don’t know I just wanna be a seal!
Maile: Okay, so maybe a gray seal?
Laina: Sure.
Maile: Okay gray seals are endangered so…but you don’t have to be endangered if you don’t want to…
Award for Most Entertaining Instagram Comments goes to:
These people…
Award for best hotel view goes to:
Our room! This was a Groupon well spent!
Award for Most Nagging Thought while driving goes to:
Maile’s principal! We got a letter from the kids school letting us know they were alarmed by how much school Maile has missed. Maile doesn’t get sick and miss a day of school, Maile gets sick and she misses a week of school. She’s got a sensitive little immune system, but I didn’t realize this was an abnormal amount of school to miss (18 days this year). How concerned do I need to be?
Award for Best Song of the Weekend goes to:
Wynonna for making me cry with this song. Garth made me cry with this song. And Alan made me cry with this song. I don’t know what Pat is talking about when he says country music is depressing.
Award for Temper Tantrum of the Weekend goes to:
Kainoa! For screaming at me to put his shoes on NOW.
And again to Kainoa for screaming because we didn’t turn his movie on first.
And again to Kainoa for screaming at me for putting him in time out when I yelled ‘no’ and ran away after I asked him to stop running at the pool.
And again to Kainoa for screaming at me in McDonald’s for 20 minutes for not getting him a drink or food when he told me he didn’t want a drink or food and then changed his mind after the drinks and food had been ordered.
Thank you Kainoa for screaming, “I don’t WANT your drink!! Your drink is DISGUSTIIING!” and also “THIS is why I call you Ugly!!” and also “GET me a drink and when I GET it I’m going to DUMP IT ON YOUR HEAD like you did to ME when I was LITTLE!!!!” and then this gem, “THIS is why I want to PUNCH you in the FACE!!”
I have to say it’s been an honor being your mother Kainoa, but you’ve made it abundantly clear we have quite a bit of work to do.”
Award for Best Looking Kids goes to…
These guys! No one else in the world is adorable enough to make me forget what a huge hassle it is to travel across the state with little ones, but every year I look forward to doing it all over again. Way to go kids!
Don’t get ugly.

You are much braver than I… the only time I’m traveling alone (for now) is with just the 3 month old to Blissdom. I’m nervous enough about that!
Karen and Gerard says
Loved this angle to share about your trip, very cute and interesting. You are one brave lady! Congrats on not beating up your son! He needs to learn some respect for–perhaps dad could assist with this.
Kiks says
everyone seemed to really had a good time :)
Southern Angel says
Ahhh boys aren’t they grand?? I am glad that you all had a good time for the most part though. I had a nightmare last night about driving to another state to visit my nephew and his wife with just my 3. Yeah and mine are much older but the thought made me shudder.
Mama Melch says
It looks like an amazing trip, and sounds just like a family vacation filled with the usual whuckery and fun. :-)
Kate @ Mommy Monologues says
I used to miss a lot of school when I would get sick. I was the oldest of 5 kids & with all the different classroom germs, I would catch everything!
Love, love, love the pic of the telephone booth! Who knew places still had those?!!!
Savannah says
My response to the principal would be, “Shall I send her to school sick?” That is your only other option, right?
Jennifer says
I got one of those letters from the school this weekend too! But mine was that she has missed 10 days this semester, and they are allowed 10. Granted one of those days the nurse sent her home because she puked all over the bathroom. I think next time I’ll send her to school puking with a fever and when they call I’ll respond, “But the letter said…”

Oh, Kat…we’ve all had our “dumping the water” moments; some of us (me) have possibly had more than her fair share. Traveling with kids is hard. But, if it’s any consolation, once they get a bit older traveling with them is lots of fun!
Stacey @ Life So Lovely says
I only have two kids, and they are older…and I still don’t travel alone with them! You are brave!
I actually have a problem with parents who brag about their kid never missing a single day of school…surely, at some point that kid was at school sick. Probably passing germies to my kid. If one of my children even remotely acts sick, I keep them at home!
Chris Carter says
We are off to Florida this week and I am SURE that I will be having an awards ceremony of our own soon too! LOL Great pictures and adorable kids you have…tantrums and all. :) PS: Groupons ROCK!
Erin white says
I love that you record this for posterity publicly;) this is so much better then pulling out those blackmail pics of their future :)
Jen says
What an awesome looking hotel! And yeah, traveling with kids does suck but it’s usually fun too.
Tiffany says
And the award for adorable blogger goes to…you!!! I love the awards…the seal story is my favorite. And that view!!!!! P.S. 18 days is a lot…I’m a teacher…did they get her homeschool tutoring? In our district, if they miss more than 5 days due to being ill, they get tutoring to help them catch up. You may want to ask! Especially if she has a doctor’s note…
Xiomara Maldonado says
Love the seals conversation! And I sure understand how frustrating those temper tantrums can be.
Andrea says
I know exactly that lake view! That’s where I grew up every single summer :)
Charity says
Your still breathing and everyone is safe I would say it was a successful trip!
Jerralea says
Yes, you should get an award – for being brave enough to start out ON YOUR OWN with three kids.
I was never that brave …
