Episode 25: The Elf On The Shelf

The Elf On The Shelf has created a bit of a stir in my Facebook stream this month. There’s a camp of moms who love this tradition they’ve started with their kids and a camp of moms rolling their eyes. I never would have anticipated that we would someday add an elf to our list of items to mommy war over, but it seems to be brewing.

I read one article that claimed moms are going over the top with their little elf antics just so they can post the pictures on Facebook and that if it weren’t for social media they probably wouldn’t be so over the top with their set ups.

And to that I say booooooo.

Even if a parent is inspired to get creative with memory making because it’s fun to share online or because they saw an idea posted on Pinterest. Where is the harm in that? The kids still get great memories and so what if mom gets a secondary kick out of herself on Facebook with a couple likes from Grandma and Grandpa and Uncle Joe? The big winners will still be the kids.

I’ll admit I’ve been in the camp of Elf haters, but watch what happened when for episode 24 at The Stir I decided to actually TRY The Elf On The Shelf:

Our adult kids with children have the elf. It seems to be a fun thing to move it around. I think unless you have many strange unusual ideas for it (and the setup time) you probably need to save the best ones for close to Christmas.

We are thinking about getting one, but 30 bucks for it right now isn’t in the budget. I have one pinned that I am going to see if my sister can make for us next year. A little less creepy then the store bought elf anyway.
