I wrote a fun gif-friendly article for SheKnows about how to prepare kids for going back to school. It’s called 12 Tips to prep your kids for the unexpected this school year.
I wrote it before this school year had started and ironically enough did not add any advice for mothers who find themselves crying in the counselor’s office for help with a transition to middle school that is going horribly wrong.
If it had occurred to me that a mother might find herself requesting release forms to remove her child from school after only 1.5 days of attendance, perhaps I would have found some fun gifs to represent that unexpected moment.
Maybe something like this:
But it hadn’t occurred to me.
If you happen to fall into the category of parents who gently encourage excitedly nervous children to enjoy their first weeks of school, I recommend you take a look at the 12 tips I shared and we can have a nice virtual giggle together.
If you happen to fall into the category of parents who is unsuccessfully navigating the murky waters of middle school with fragile tweenage souls, I expect I’ll be seeing you for drinks every Friday. We can have a nice virtual cry together.
Maybe again on Monday.
Maybe again midday Wednesday?
I’M FLEXIBLE.

Oh man, I’m so sorry. I never comment, but as a middle school teacher (in the greater Seattle area!!), I want to see if I can help. Middle school is big and scary, and it can be a difficult transition, but it can also be really, really great. I work with such wonderful kids and incredible colleagues, I absolutely know what it very good experience it can be.
Shoot me an e-mail if you think I can maybe help!

Thank you so much! It’s been really hard over here. Thankfully our team of teachers and counselors have been spectacular with their support. We’ve decided to go a different route with her and have enrolled in WAVA for the year. I’m really hoping this is the right move for her. She’s been basically non-stop crying since school started (and so have I). After just a couple of days at school I couldn’t get her to go back so I felt like we were under the gun to find an alternate method of educating her quickly. I’ve been sick over it, but I think this will be best for her this year. Hopefully I can get her back in our school next year. Thank you so much for reaching out though! I didn’t realize you were a Seattle area teacher! I bet we’re closer to each other than we think!

Oh no! Hope it’s going better now. My oldest will be in middle school next year and I’m terrified.

Middle school is so scary. I hate that she struggles with it.
