2. March 23rd is National Puppy Day. Tell us about your puppy!
I mentioned a few workshops ago that I was fostering our seventh Greyhound. She’s not a puppy, but she’s as sweet as one. Winter is a four year old retired racer and I love her. Typically when I foster there is a honeymoon period where I fall in love with each perfect Greyhound. Then their personalities really start blossoming and I’m like, “ok this one likes to jump up on people”, “this one eats food off my counter”, “this one breaks out of his crate and destroys soiled diapers in my playroom”, but it has been a month now and Winter is still perfect. She has completely stolen my heart.
About two weeks in I started making noise to Pat that I might really like to adopt her. She’s so calm and sweet. She has a little old soul and I swear she hugs me back. Pat thinks I’m losing my mind and he may be right. We have a full house, she may be calm but she’s still another mouth to feed and she’s still another body. She’s still another thing to make arrangements for when we go out of town…something that is expensive enough with the two dogs and cat we already have. Speaking of our cat, she’s old. Our time with her is limited and she refuses to come inside with our Greyhound friend here even though the Greyhound friend has not threatened her one bit. Our cat may be senile. She scream meows to get in and then she scream meows to get back out all day long. She doesn’t know what she wants.
I chose not to adopt the sweetest dog ever and while I’m sad to see her go, I am thrilled to about where she is going. Winter will be heading to Sitka, Alaska on Friday to live with her forever family. Her adoptive parents are veterinarians, they go on leash free hikes in beautiful Alaska and they adopted my previous foster Ralph in 2015!
I can’t believe my two fosters get to live together. In fact, her adoptive father is flying here on Thursday JUST to pick her up and take her home to Alaska with him on Friday. They haven’t even met her and they already love her more than I do.
If I can’t keep precious Winter this is the best case alternative!
Happy National Puppy Day!

Such a sweetheart! Glad to hear she is getting an amazing forever home. And you are amazing, fostering those doggies!
Mama Kat says
Aw thanks, I love doing it! They’re so fun to meet. Winter is going to love her new home!

I love those skinny heads! I think I told you Dad always said that greyhounds were short-tempered and high-strung, but I’ve met a few and they’re the nicest dogs, and Winter looks like a real sweetie! You think one day you’ll actually adopt one?
Mama Kat says
They are like, the exact opposite of what your dad described them as. lol! But I guess you always have an exception to the rule. I think I will adopt one someday, maybe when the kid are out of the house. Having a dog in the house is a lot easier when Pat wants one too, so I need to wait until he’s on board. He’s a former rottweiler owner and he likes little dogs now.

What a great foster mom you are! Sorry you can’t keep her, but it really sounds like an ideal post-race life for Winter.
We had to send our old dog off to heaven last week, and even the cat is missing having a dog in the house. I’ve always sort of wanted a greyhound, I think they’re beautiful and have heard good things about their temperaments.. I’ll need to sell the idea to the husband, though!

So I’m both sad and glad for you. Bless you for fostering those Grey Hounds and socializing them for adoption! (Grey Hound racing is a despicable I wish they’d out law)

“I might really like to adopt her.” Precisely the reason my husband tries to limit my time around bunnies that need homes. Two of the three we have currently were destined for someone’s stovetop. The horror! Instead they are now living the good life with the Crazy Bunny Lady as my kids call me!

Wishing Winter the very best! She’s clearly a keeper (irony not intended …. she just seems like a treasure.)
