2. Write about something that brought you joy today.
A few years ago I bought Kainoa one of those Razor three wheelers that drift when you pull the brake quickly. He had loved his first one so much that the wheels eventually fell off and I knew he was getting a little big for it, but I wanted to replace it. That replacement three wheeler has been sitting in its box in our garage ever since. I bought it for him, but then never put it together for him.
Today, Kainoa re-discovered the drifter in our garage. He and his friend tore into the box and dumped all of the pieces onto the floor. I took one look at the directions and all of the pieces and was like, “Derrr…you might have to wait for Dad on this one buddy.” I just can’t with all the screws and the pieces and the lack of desire to want to build a bike for him.
I went back inside, but Kainoa’s friend sat down and started tinkering. He must have been at it for at least 45 minutes and all be darned if that little 9 year old didn’t build Kainoa’s three wheeler right there in the garage! I was so proud of him. What a great kid! What a great influence he is on my own son with all that determination and focus he just displayed!
And then Kainoa came in and told me he cut his hand on sticker bushes because his friend wanted to trespass into private property that is blocked by a locked fence and even offered to grab a hammer from his house. Never mind the fact that Kainoa will basically do anything you suggest as long as it sounds like there is an adventure to be had. I have a feeling this kid he’s befriending might be a little less perfect than I thought.
But at least I don’t have to put together that drifter now…that brings me joy.

The drifter looks like fun, but I wouldn’t want to put it together either!

I’m old enough to remember the precursor to The Drifter….a Big Wheel. No assembly required. (that I remember anyway). We had so much fun riding ours. We found something like it several years ago at a second hand store or maybe a garage sale? My kids also have fond memories of riding theirs.
I am not mechanically inclined myself and wonder what this thing is you speak of called “directions” Rarely do ever use them which might explain why I always have to call my husband to fix what I can’t get to work, Haha.
Good for the boys for figuring out how to put it together!

Pretty cool they figured it out and what a cool bike! Seriously, looks like fun! Not that I would fit ;)

Wow, pretty impressive your son’s friend put it together himself! I guess that kind of super power can be used for either good or evil. Cool toy!

Are the back wheels supposed to spark like that?
Beware of 9-year-olds that are good with tools…
