3. Share your last day of school plans/recap.
Our last day of school happens near the end of June and I believe the kids attend for about 2.5 hours.
Pretty pointless.
So we’re going to Hawaii instead. I don’t know if you can actually see me counting down the days for this trip, BUT I AM!
The last time we went to Hawaii was three years ago for a family reunion on Pat’s side and this time we’re going for…another family reunion on Pat’s side. Marrying an islander might be one of my smarter life choices.
Ideally I wish we could take the kids every year so that they could spend more time with those aunts, uncles and cousins, but as it turns out a plane ticket costs an average of 45 thousand dollars and one sacrificial lamb. We’ll be paying off this trip for the next three years and then we’ll go again.
When is your last day of school and what are your plans? Come to Hawaii with me instead!

Hawaii is on my list of places to go! My children have been out of school since May 18th and we’ve already been on one vacation and preparing for our second. I wish we were going to Hawaii but like you said, the airfare cost an arm and leg. I guess I need to save up. :)

MAY 18th!!! That is definitely not fair. We are in school over a month longer than you! I bet you are one of those weird places that starts back up in August though… Airfare cost is ridiculous. Ten years ago we were flying for about $500 per ticket. I wonder if it ever gets that “low” anymore.

We scrimped and saved for a Oahu vacation a year ago last January! It was heavenly! We used frequent flyer miles, (put all of our recurring bills that we can on it) found and airbnb, did the goOahu card and flew the red eye. Not the most fun airplane ride as 3 of our 6 had some airsickness, but it was all worth it once we dipped our toes in the Pacific and enjoyed 12 days of fun in the sun while there was snow on the ground at home.
What a FABULOUS last day of school!

Well I should have contacted you to take care of our travel arrangements!! ;) We go the airbnb/homeaway route too and I LOVE having that kind of space for the family. It will definitely be worth it!

I’m surprised you don’t have to give the airlines one of the kids as collateral. That’s a very expensive trip! You could almost fly to Japan for less… hmmm… then fly to Hawai’i from there… might be cheaper.
It’s worth it for the kids to see their family in Hawai’i, though, and I’m sure Pat would want to see his family. Where are they located?
Have a good trip!

It’s the family that draws us back for sure! My husband was born and raised on Lanai. Small town boy!

From a thousand years ago, i.e. when I was in grammar school, I remember that was the island Dole owned and made a huge pineapple plantation. The Blogger’s Best Friend tellse me Larry Ellison from Oracle owns it now…
Mama Kat says
Yes, Ellison owns it now. I still can’t comprehend why a human can purchase an entire island that is part of a state. My husband used to work in those pineapple fields!

Oh that sounds fabulous! Fred and I went to Kauai in 2007, and I loved it so much I had to show it to the kids. So we went back (to Maui that time) in 2008 and brought the kids. We haven’t been able to get back there, but I’m so glad we gave the kids that experience. It is still our favorite place to go. Nothing like those beaches. Hope you have a great time and make lots of memories.
