We are in high gear over here getting ready for the first week of school! In our area school does not start until after Labor Day our house is currently pulsing with back to school jitters and last minute preparations. While we transition back to our “more business, less play” work schedule, it means changes are brewing for our pets as well. It’s important to help things run smoothly for them as their own routine will change and possibly bring some separation anxiety along with it!
Summer at our house means our dogs get way more attention! Kainoa was walking them everyday after lunch, we take them along on day trips to the lake beach, and have even included them in our camping trips. The dogs have become used to a day filled with noise, interaction and activity and shifting to a day where they may be spending long hours alone is cause for concern.
Today I’ve teamed up with Purina to share a list of pet anxiety tips provided by Dr. Kurt Venator, veterinarian and Ph.D., that will promote our pets health and wellness!
5 ways to make change manageable for pets during the back to school season:
1. Set Up A Routine
Predictability helps pets feel secure. Once school starts acclimate your pet to the change by replacing the old summer schedule with a new one. Leave and return home at the same times of day and dedicate a time to play. Adding structure and consistency can help them anticipate what to expect and mitigate loneliness and anxiety.
2. Spend Quality Time
While you are away, your pet has been alone longing for your return. Setting aside time with your pet at the end of the day is critical. Whether it’s a walk or a cuddle session, these times help keep pets active, mentally sharp, and prevents them from feeling neglected.
3. Play It Up
Pets signal they are experiencing duress in different ways—destructive behavior is one. If owners see this symptom, they can help channel their pet’s energy proactively with rigorous play. The physical activity gives pets an outlet and helps relieve stress and pent up energy.
4. Gift A Toy
Just before school starts, buy your pet a new interactive toy. Its novelty and intricacy can help keep your pet occupied during alone time. Consider chew toys for dogs and scratch posts or other furniture for cats.
5. Turn on Tunes
Play soothing music when the family is away. Music has a few benefits for pets including masking distracting and worrisome noises and promoting relaxation.
Ultimately, we all want our pets to live their healthiest, happiest lives with us! I hope these tips give you something to consider as you make changes in your own household. They definitely gave me something to think about too!
