6. What are your Halloween traditions? How do you plan to celebrate this year?
Every year for the past 17 years we have dressed our kids up for trick or treating. It started in my neighborhood with a couple of cousins and a trip to Grandma’s, then as our family grew it slowly escalated to full Halloween Costume parties with games and prizes. Our whole family would get dressed up for festivities and on Halloween night we would trick or treat as one huge group.
I’ve wondered when our last year to trick or treat would be. When would my kids officially outgrow it? Maile is a junior in high school, Laina is a sophomore, and Kainoa is my last hold on childhood at 7th grade…even though he’s actually taller than Laina at this point. I think we can thank Covid for that final push away from trick or treating and although that should be sad, my kids don’t seem phased about missing out on our typical traditions and festivities.
This year Laina is making plans to hang out with her cousin. Maile will probably hang out with her boyfriend, Kainoa will be playing video games and I will be sitting next to the door with my bowl of candy waiting to greet anyone braving the streets. I haven’t decided if I should just leave a bowl on the porch or risk greeting trick or treaters, but either way, this will be our first year staying home in a long time.
I sense this is the end of a Halloween era for us, but I promise that when and if my kids start building their own families, I will be sending out my party invites first thing! The circle of Halloween traditions are to be continued!

Kids’ Halloween isn’t what it used to be, and with your kids getting older, it’s taking a double hit.
We had a grand total of two trick or treaters. Good thing I bought the big candy bag from Costco!

Even though my kids are grown now, and I haven’t dressed up, handed out candy, or participated in any festivities in years, Halloween is still my favorite! Since my kids outgrew it (not to mention, our area is too busy for trick or treaters), I’ve been mostly just chilling with candy, scary movies, and midnight margaritas. It was lots of fun when the boys were little, and it’s still lots of fun in a different way now! I really should make more of an effort to get out for Halloween activities like haunted houses and corn mazes.
It sounds like your house is the place to be! Even if the kids have outgrown trick or treating, your parties where you dress up sound like a lot of fun. And when Covid is over, the kids can invite friends over to hang out. I’d have loved that as a teenager.
