3. Share a lesson you learned from your Mother.
Have you tried NOT talking about covid for 24 hours? I’m so tired of it and yet I can’t stop talking about it. It seems every conversation circles back to the latest developments. Who is and who is not getting the vaccine and why or why not. What’s happening in India? What new more dangerous strain is making its rounds? Are we in the midst of another wave and what does that mean for the phase our local government has us in? Even my drive to the post office flashes daily reminders on giant electric street signs. When I do manage to NOT think about it and do something enjoyable, I feel guilty for indulging in normal activities when so many people are suffering.
I told my mom that it’s hard to escape the heaviness of it all and her response was so lovely. She said, “an optimistic person is able to find joy in even the smallest of things despite what they might be going through.” Even in grief, you might spot a hummingbird that reminds you of your mom. In that moment you can appreciate the hummingbird and find joy. It doesn’t take away from whatever else you might be going through, it’s simply a reminder that there is still loveliness all around you no matter how small. I think, probably in allowing yourself to experience those moments it heals something in you or at the very least keeps you from losing your mind to the heaviness around you.
I need to find more hummingbirds.

Kat,
Your mother’s wise words are spot on. We need to see the joy in the moment. Bad things will always be with us but choosing to look for the good keeps one from the insanity of the horrible truths that surround us daily. I do not feel guilty if my brain is Covid-free for 24 hours, the longer I can keep from thinking about depressing thoughts the better I say. Although, we do not live in North Carolina, I read the other day the governor may reopen the state with no pandemic mandates whatsoever which gives me hope that other states will follow. As a Christian I recognize anything that steals your happiness and controls every fiber in your being is not from God. I won’t allow the darkness to over shadow my heart/mind but will push through it hopefully as a beacon of light for others to follow. Keep your mother’s words close to heart. She’s a smart woman! Thanks for sharing, my dear!

Thank you for your wise words! I did hear California might be loosening mandates and yesterday our state announced June 30th we will 100% go back to normal if cases continue to decrease. That would be wonderful! I can’t wait to put this all behind us someday and I agree with you.

I’m hearing that the number of new cases has dropped significantly, so I have a feeling it won’t be long efore the media starts harping on a new thing to panic about…
Mama Kat says
I’m ready for the new thing to harp about for sure!

I’m trying to divert my attention away from all things COVID, honestly, I am.
It’s not working. I was doing very well until I had to deal with a client and her opposing views on both the virus and other “sensitive” topics….I tried changing the conversation but she persisted to barrage me with her political opinions and it was “game ON!”. The conversation ended with me asking her if she checked the expiration date on the Kool Aid she’s been drinking.
Send me Hummingbirds. Please.

It’s amazing to me how much people care about each other’s personal choices. I’m with you, I prefer not to get into it but if someone keeps poking I will unleash. lol
