5. Summer is here! What are you most looking forward to?
My kids last day of school is tomorrow and I am thrilled about it. We managed to survive an entire year of online learning as well as the last half of last year. The girls did great and have required no assistance from me. Kainoa, on the other hand, has never received such low grades. These last few days I have been cheering him on to complete any missing assignments he can so that he can bring his Fs and Ds up to Ds and Cs. The first half of the year I assisted Kainoa a LOT with his work. And by a LOT, I mean, I did some of his assignments just to keep him afloat. At one point I even created a really wonderful screenplay for drama class:
I know what you’re thinking. Kat, you are enabling your son by doing his work for him. This is true. HOWEVER…my son is not going to be an actor or work in theater when he is older. He does not need to know how to draft a screenplay or how to design a set. In the off chance, he does take a turn toward Broadway, I think somewhere along the way he will be offered a refresher course and will not be kicking himself for letting his mom complete his screenplay. He’ll be fine.
When a hybrid option became available that allowed students to attend in person twice a week I signed Kainoa up and I tapped out. I thought if he’s going twice a week then his teachers will be able to keep tabs on what he needs to turn in. He can work on assignments in class even if he’s dropping the ball at home.
This was not the case. Kainoa’s grades dropped and since I tapped out, I wasn’t even sure what was due or what we were learning about. So here we are in the homestretch grasping for Ds and Cs. I am just plain giddy to leave the school behind and welcome summer!! I look forward to no alarm clocks, no questions about missing work, no assistance with screenplays. WE DID IT!
Bring on the sunny days and iced coffees! I’m ready for Sunday night volleyball games and camping adventures. And most of all I am hopeful for and look forward to a normal school year next year! Kainoa feels the same way I’m sure.

I feel so badly for school kids that had to deal with pandemic-imposed online learning! Seems like, in general, the younger the kid, the more the learning loss. Kainoa is not alone in his struggles!
And your school year is just wrapping up now? Kids here have been out since around the end of May, with a few sports events spilling into June. Feel like a marathon after “the wall”? Happy Summer!

Yes, I think Washington State is always behind the rest of the country when it comes to wrapping up the school year! But we don’t go back until the first week in September. I’ll take a late June release date if it means the kids don’t have to be in school during August. That’s one of our hottest months. And I totally agree the young kids are taking a hard hit. I don’t know how they sit still and actually learn anything through computer zoom lessons.

They had him write a SCREENPLAY? I don’t care who you are, that’s hard.
