5. Write about what you miss most about living at home with your parents.
I was really looking forward to becoming an adult. My Mom was bossy and nosy. She asked questions about “how my day was” and “what my plans were” for the weekend. I couldn’t wait to grow up and own my life without living under someone else’s rules. And now I want to go back. I want to move in with my mom and here are five reasons why:
1. Sleeping In.
I miss the days where the sound of my Mom vacuuming in the morning/early afternoon was the thing that angered me most. Nothing is more obnoxious than your mother choosing to vacuum directly next to your bedroom door while you’re sleeping right? Oh wait, there is one thing more obnoxious than that. Being the mom who has to vacuum in a home filled with teenagers who destroy the house and then sleep all day is more obnoxious than that. Seriously, I was angry at someone else keeping the home I lived in spotless? People pay good money for that!
2. Home Cooked Meals.
I grossly underestimated how much I would hate being the family meal planner. I actually like cooking. I like trying new recipes. But for…foreverrrrrrr??? Every single day I have to think about who ate what, who likes what, and what food we have in the kitchen to work with that will best suit everyone’s needs. Sometimes cereal just sounds fine to me. Sometimes cereal just sounds fine to me for like weeks at a time. But I have these little humans I have to keep alive and they will wind up in therapy and malnutritioned if I raise them on cereal alone. I want to go back home where my mother was the family meal planner and let her continue to do that forever. She’s good at it. She likes it.
3. Doing Nothing.
I did nothing. I would come home from school, grab an oversized Costco muffin from the cupboard, sit down and watch Dr. Phil and Oprah. I would doze off during the 5 o’clock news/MASH time slot. Maybe talk on the phone after that. Maybe do some homework. Wait for the family meal planner to make my dinner. Talk more on the phone. Watch more TV. Maybe throw in sports practices and games…but what kind of life is that? It’s a life of doing nothing. And I want it back.
4. Free Money.
My Mom had this magic purse that dispensed 20 dollar bills. Need gas? Need lunch money? Need clothes? The dispensary would provide. Now that I’m living on my own with my own family, I noticed that my dispensary only holds loose change and gum wrappers with chewed gum folded inside. I really miss my Mom’s money dispensary.
5. My Roommates.
I have to schedule dinner with my sisters now. Don’t get me wrong, we chat on the phone and text all the time, but when we lived together I was all UP in their business. We made infomercials with kitchen knives. We created our own musical performances. We danced, we wrastled, we fought, we colored, and we watched movies together. Okay…so not a ton has changed there except that my roommates now are a lot younger than me and I can’t borrow their clothes.
Sometimes I’m not sure why I was in such a hurry to grow up and move out. I WANT MY MOM!

All so relatable. Especially the meal planning EVERY DAY. Mom never warned me about that… probably on purpose.

What, you can’t borrow Maile’s or Laina’s clothes? Bummer!
