Heart To Hearts
In Her Quiet Girl Voice
Cabin Fever
Ever notice how the birds disappear when it rains?
They’re so happy and flappy and chirpy when the sun is out…flying around, building their nests, waking us up at FIVE IN THE MORNING.
But when it rains they stay in their little homes and wait it out.
It shuts them right up.
I can’t help but wonder if on the rainy days the Mom birds are sitting with a nest of babies just thinking, “OMG shut UP! Stop squirming and moving and chirping and just be QUIET ALREADY!”
Do they get cabin fever like we do?
Talk amongst yourselves.
Read That Part Loudly
I asked Laina to draw a picture of herself reading because it’s something she loves to do.
Junie B. Jones is a classic around here and I’m not sure how I feel about the little hoodlum because she says ‘stupid’ and does naughty things, but she makes my kids want to read so I just let it happen. To be honest, I’m kind of surprised my kids don’t say that word considering I call anything stupid that doesn’t work in our house.
Stupid oven.
Stupid internet connection.
Stupid stairs that trip me on the way UP.
Seriously, who trips going UP stairs? How does one fail to raise their foot that extra half inch?
It’s the stairs.
They move.
Anyway, Junie B. Jones is our girl here and she says stupid and maybe that’s exactly why my girls love her so much. They get to read the word they’re not allowed to say.
The other day during reading time Laina brought me her book and pointed to the capitalized words, “Should I go in my room to read, ’cause I have to read that part loudly…”
She read in a room with the door closed, but I could hear her yelling those capitalized words from the kitchen. Naturally I had to go in and quickly video tape it:
Her enthusiasm is overwhelming no?
First Breathe
Sometimes kids say things so innocently and sweetly that it just kind of catches your breath. Maile loves to learn, she loves reading books about nature and animals and spouts off random information about whatever she’s learning all the time. Recently she had a friend over and their idea of a good time was to flip through books and write out ‘fact’ cards.
“Ooh look at this! Tiger cubs leave their mother when they are around 2 years of age. Whoaaa…I’m writing that on my fact card are you??”
The other night I was putting her to bed and she was all, “Did you know when a baby whale is born it’s mommy and daddy pushes it up to the top of the water so it can get it’s first little breathe?”
And I was all, “Really? No, I didn’t know that…but I believe it. Mommies and Daddies will do whatever they need to make sure their babies catch their breath.”
And then I was all, “You know what? I’d really love it if you drew me a picture of a baby whale being pushed to the top…you think you can make me one in the morning?”
And so she did:
Freaking adorable.
And of course, she’s right.
